Top 3 Benefits of Marijuana Legalization
Various states in America now legalize the recreational use of marijuana, because of various
initiatives from groups and citizens who strive for their views be known.
We listed the top advantages of marijuana legalization:
1. Medical benefits
It is undeniable that marijuana is a great pain reliever. In fact, it has been found out that cannabis
is as a safer alternative to narcotic painkillers. According to a study of Canadian researchers,
those who received the highest marijuana dosage of 9.4% experienced the most pain relief.
Most of us think that marijuana can cause cancer, but little did we know, it is the exact opposite.
Aside from being a pain reliever, studies also suggest that marijuana can treat various types of
cancer, including blood, liver, and throat cancer.
The medical benefits of marijuana are not just applicable to humans, but also to our pets.
According to a 2013 study from the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association,
animals, specifically cats and dogs, can feel the effects of pots within a few hours and eased
them from suffocation.
2. Responsible use
California legalized the consumption of marijuana in 2016, through the approval of Proposition
64. In an interview with Time magazine, Amanda Reiman, the Drug Policy Alliance's manager
of marijuana law and policy in California admitted that one of the messages the legalization tells
us is for adults to use it in a “new way”, in a “responsible way”.
One of the parameters of the proposition states that weed cannot be smoked or ingested in public.
Of course, we should keep in mind the safety and the rights of those who do not use marijuana.
Proposition 64 also values consumer safety as it mandates edibles to be low-dose, down to 10
milligrams of THC (the psychoactive agent in marijuana). Even if marijuana tolerance varies
from each person, lowering the dosage still promotes consumer safety as it allows consumers to
know how much they are actually ingesting.
3. Reduce Harm
In addition, the proposition mandates edibles to have childproof packaging. It can be
remembered that in 2014, nine children were brought in to the largest children’s hospital in
Colorado after mistakenly ingesting edibles, mistaking them as treats or candy.
Whether you like it or not, weed is widely used. Prohibiting it only results to the minorities,
specifically the young and the people of color, being disproportionately detained and jailed.
Moreover, marijuana product testing is a standard requirement for legalized marijuana markets.
Over the years, it has been proven that marijuana restriction is ineffective. These restrictions did
not lower the usage rate. In fact, there is an increase in the support for its legalization. As
mentioned, marijuana legalization means becoming responsible users and respecting the choice
of others not to use it. Now that many states in America legalize marijuana for recreational use, it
is important for us to keep an eye of its scope. You do not want to end up in jail due to
ignorance. Eitherway, it is a shame to impose prohibitions considering the benefits of marijuana
