First Graduate Summer English Teacher
First Graduate works with students who will be the first in their families to graduate from college. Starting
in middle school we provide individual mentoring, academic support, exposure to college and career
options, and high school and college application support. The First Graduate summer program is one of
the most powerful elements of our middle school program.
The goals of the summer program are to:
● Prevent summer learning loss in math, language arts, and STEM
● Provide incoming 7th grade students with the long view of the First Graduate program
● Prepare 8th grade students for the high school application process
● Build a strong sense of First Graduate community among students, teachers, peer mentors, and staff
Key Responsibilities:
● Develop a 9-day English Language Arts curriculum for our 7th or 8th grade students
○ Students will be divided into four groups, with 15-18 students in each group
○ Two cohorts will receive instruction in ELA on Mon/Wed and two cohorts will receive the same
instruction on Tue/Thur
● Develop a 9-day elective course curriculum with a final project in mind
○ Elective class sizes will range from 15-25 students
○ One cohort will receive instruction on Mon/Wed and a different cohort will receive the same
instruction on Tue/Thur
● Participate in Friday activities and field trips(Volunteer day, Olympics, College Day, Career Day, Expo Day)
● Attend a weekly grade-level meeting
● Attend a weekly all-staff meeting
● Track student attendance and academic performance
● Help build a sense of First Graduate community among students and other summer staff
Minimum Qualifications:
● Three years of middle school and/or high school teaching experience
● Effective planning, organizational, and motivational skills
● Ability to build relationships with students of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
● Ability to motivate and engage students in academic, enrichment, and team-building activities
Preferred Qualifications:
● Current California teaching credential
● Experience working in or with San Francisco public schools
Dates of Employment, Compensation, and Location:
● Orientation: June 7th-June 9th
○ 8:00am-3:00pm
● Summer Program: June 12th-July 14th
○ Mon-Wed: 8:00-1:30
○ Thurs: 8:00-2:15
○ Fri: 8:00-3:00
● Salary: $3500
● Location: Everett Middle School (450 Church Street, San Francisco, CA 94114)
