Katana vs. Long sword
Katana and long sword are the two most recognizable weapons in the
history. They resembled each other in many properties. The distinction
between the two is made especially on the cutting ability, thrusting ability,
guarding capacity, technical versatility, speed and durability.

The cutting ability of the blade is the capacity to deliver powerful shearing
and cleaving edge blows. It is the main purpose of the sword. The katanas
are known for its cutting power. The katana has extraordinary sharpness.
But, the long sword does not have such a reputation. The cutting ability of
the long sword is not known fully.
The thrusting ability of a weapon is the capacity to make penetrating stabs.
It is difficult to defend against a stab. A longer blade can stab out to a
greater penetration. A katana is optimized for cutting and cannot be used

for giving a good thrust. A long sword has a design that is particularly used
for thrusting a deeper wound.
The guarding capacity of a weapon is the ability to be moved to block the
assorted strikes of other weapons during a combat. A long sword provides
more protection against threats as compared to the katana.
The speed of a weapon is the velocity at which a weapon is used to perform
the defensive and offensive actions. The speed of a hand weapon depends
upon the power of the user as it is moved by the user and the weapon is not
moved by itself. A shorter katana can slash more quickly than a long sword.
Technical versatility is the mechanical utility of a weapon. The katana is a
single edged weapon mainly used for cutting and the long sword is a
multitasker and used for different tasks. The katana is used for one
directional cut whereas the long sword is used for a wide range of striking
actions.
