Buying a car whether new or pre-owned is a great feeling. But, if you have decided to
buy a used car and positive about its condition, then proceed with the needed
documentation. Everything should be in the right order. If the important documents are
not available, this could mean that there is a problem with the automobile, which in that
case, stay away from it. Make sure you have these documents while processing your car
acquisition.
Registration Document
Also called the log book, the registration certificate contains information about the
vehicle and its owner. Verify that the details on the certificate matches the car. Check if
the VIN is the same as the one on the plaque beneath the hood. If you detect any
inconsistency, request for proof of identity.
Service and Car History
This will show you what sort of repairs and maintenance has been performed on the
vehicle. The owners who have kept the receipts from all the services before are usually
the people who have taken proper care of their auto. Getting a VIN vehicle history check
will tell you if the car has an outstanding financial agreement, has failed MOT, has
mileage discrepancy, has been stolen, has a number plate change, etc.
Form 32 and 35
These documents are important in case the past owner procured a loan to buy the car.
Ask the owner a copy of the NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the lender in order to
know if the car loan has been paid off entirely. This is important because the finance
company may hold the new owner (you) responsible in paying the pending loan once the
registration certificate is transferred in your name.
MOT Certificate
Find out if the automobile is the same as the model, the make, and the information on
the MOT certification. All vehicles that are over three years old are required to pass the
MOT test to obtain the certificate. Look for any advice note from an auto mechanic.
Moreover, you may ask the seller to re-test the car again if the MOT is about to expire.
Insurance
You need to transfer the insurance to your name, so that you will no trouble processing
an insurance claim in case there is an accident. As you process the transfer of the
policy, see if the insurance premium has been paid on a regular basis. Check also the
expiry date of the insurance plan and if has been claimed before. Knowing this will tell
you if the automobile had been in an accident.
Being a pre-owned car, expect it to come with some issues. But, if the seller is
answering your questions willingly and cooperating completely, this indicates that the car
is in good condition.
