Paid Research Assistant Internship
New York // Part Time // Research
Overview

The Jain Family Institute is seeking an intern, in college or early graduate school,
to assist with the sourcing and research of new projects. The ideal candidate has
a wide-ranging interest in all forms of intellectual activity and a passion for
interdisciplinary engagement. You will be joining a small team of generalistpractitioners with backgrounds in philosophy, physics, engineering, economics,
and literature.
The internship carries a stipend of $6,000 for approximately 30 hours per week
over an initial engagement of six months. Those interested should send a CV or
résumé with contact information, a letter of interest, and two writing samples of
10–15 pages and 1-2 pages demonstrating an ability to clearly synthesize, analyze,
and communicate information from a variety of sources, to
internapps@jainfamilyinstitute.org.

Selected candidates will be invited to an in-person interview in our Manhattan
office throughout the summer.
We are accepting applications on a rolling basis to fill the position
immediately.

Required Skills and Qualifications






Most important: curiosity and its corollary, an ability to learn a wide
variety of areas quickly; alongside a passion for going beyond your area
of expertise.
Excellent analytic or quantitative skills; strong communication; a love of
rigorous research and reasoned debate
Familiarity with PowerPoint
Familiarity with Excel.
6 months cumulative, institutional experience (i.e. NGO, policy institute),
financial services experience (i.e. investment banking) or consulting
experience.

For applicants with very strong technical backgrounds, a briefer writing sample or presentation
may be submitted in lieu of the longer one.

Helpful Skills and Qualifications





Experience as research assistant or comparable
Some experience in non-academic writing (journalism, corporate or
financial research reports, etc.)
Intermediate second (or third) language skills

Responsibilities




Time commitment: approximately 30 hours a week
Attendance: three times weekly, at research meetings and presentations
at our Upper East Side office
Tasks:
o writing and editing memos, presentations, and reports for both
internal and external audiences
o compiling annotated bibliographies of literature related to
current initiatives
o conducting surveys of, and summarizing, existing projects;
o analyzing and interpreting data
o coordinating expert research on fields including economics,
political science, information science, and philosophy
