God's Top Priority
THE OPENER
What do you believe is God's highest priority? What is most important to God?
THE LESSON
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus said, "Seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness…" How do
we do this? In Matthew 22:36-40, we read:
One of the Pharisees, an expert in the law, tested Jesus with this question: "Teacher, which
is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love
your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments."
THE APPLICATION
How would you apply this to your life? What does it mean to love the Lord wholeheartedly?
What would that look like in your life? In what ways are you seeking first God's kingdom or
loving God wholeheartedly?
In Deuteronomy 4:24, God says, "Watch yourselves, that you do not forget the covenant of
the LORD your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a graven image in
the form of anything against which the LORD your God has commanded you. For the
LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God."
Deuteronomy 4:24 is talking about idols. What is an idol? An idol is anything that we love
more than God. An idol could be a person, an object, a hobby, a goal, or a desire. But God
commands us to love Him first and wholeheartedly.
Look at your life. Who or what has first place in your heart and life? What steps can you
take to improve here?
THE PRAYER
Father God, thank You for this lesson from Your Word. We now recognize what is most
important to You, to seek first Your kingdom, which is to love You and others first and
wholeheartedly. In the name of Jesus, bring conviction to our hearts about those areas
where we need to improve being greater seekers and lovers of You and Your kingdom and
help us make the necessary changes. Remind us often of what we learned today. Thank
You Father!
