appropriate heafidress. The latest addition to the
ranks of popularity, wearing the crown of success, is

the "§hoop §hoop" girf herself, BETTY EVEEETT.
Betty i s no newcomer, however, to the recording scene,

for

she has been making records for seven years. Born
23, 1939, Betty's
vocal eareer began in the Travellers' Rest Baptist
Church, Greenwood, where she sang lead in the choir.
"I left Mississippi in 1957 and went to Chicago to try
to get work as a singer, butitwasn't until 1958 that I got
myself a recording contract, after spending months
doing the rounds of managers, ågents and record
companies. Fortunately, I had my family with me, and
their support and enthusiasm was atremendous help,"
Betty's first contract was with Cobra Records for whom
she made two sirgles. S.he thenmovedonto C.J. Reeords
and it was upon the expiration of her contract with them
that she signed with Leo Austell, of Renee Records. Mr.

Ausfell, who for some time had been most impressed
with Betty's. talent, cut two records with her before
introducing his "find' to the Vee-Jay A & R manager,,

Calvin Carter, who auditioned and promptly signedBetty
to a recording contract.

"Shoop Shoop Song," a.disc that hit, and remained in,
the American National Charts for many months, earning
for Betty the title of "the Shoop Shoop girl."
"I like all music," Betty told me,,'andålthough I sing
a lot of Gospel, I would, if I couici get ihe right riatdriail
sing beat." When I asked her what she thought of the
British scene, she.said: "It's great and I am looking
forward to. coming back in. May, when I hope to do a
four-week tour."
