I decided to randomly Google “July” and here’s what came up: Patriotism
(duh!), that it is the seventh month in both Julian and Gregorian Calendars, it
is the fourth month to have 31 days and it was originally named by the Roman
Senate in honor of Julius Caesar since it is his birth month. FYI - The first known
use of July was in 1599 (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).
It also happens to be my birth month. I know, I know – shameless selfpromotion, but don’t worry, no gifts necessary… Gold River community – you
are my gift this year!
Enjoy your July… whether it’s classically patriotic or rhymes with words like

Recognizing Ray Sjogren
In our April issue’s article “The Gold River Villagers: Fostering a Sense of
Community,” we mentioned a great man who helped name the group – Ray
Sjogren. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we misspelled Ray’s last name
in the article. We want to take a moment and recognize Mr. Sjogren for his
contributions to the Gold River community and The Villagers. Though Ray and
his lovely wife are no longer with us, we want to acknowledge that he was very
proud of suggesting the name for the group, being a Gold River resident and a
Sjogren. Our apologies to the Sjogren family and again, thank you, Ray!

has created an exceptional culture within the Gold River clinic.
She absolutely loves the EYEcenter patients and the patients show
her a great deal of love in return. Even the mailman loves her!
Shirlene Fuerst, Vision Therapist and Director of Marketing, said
the following about Terri and the team in Gold River: “Our boutique
clinic is like the TV show ‘Cheers’, where everybody knows your name.
This is why I wanted to feature the amazing team at Gold River. They
could write a book on exceptional customer service.”
From the initial interaction, Terri is immediately warm, kindhearted and charismatic. She has been with the company for about

13 and 1/2 years, 10 of which she spent working directly with Dr.
Fred Fuerst. She has incredibly fond memories of her time employed
alongside the founder of the company and originally met Fred while
working in the bakery department at Raley’s grocery store. She often
completed specialty bakery orders for him, and when the time came
to begin work in the vision field she told him she needed a favor. He
immediately obliged and her time at EYEcenter began. Talk about a
community mindset!
Mrs. Redding has been married for 34 years, has two children, one
granddaughter and another expected in November. She is an animallover and absolutely adores her Bull Mastiff pup, one of the “loves of
her life.” She truly appreciates the EYEcenter patients as if they are
her extended family and sees them as her biggest inspiration. For

one of her favorite patients, she even went as far as giving her a pair of her own
earrings that she had purchased near Lake Tahoe, simply because the patient
loved them so much. Needless to say, this person has become a patient for life
and now receives freshly baked lemon cookies from Terri whenever she comes in.
Amazing customer service, indeed!
A little bit more of the (family) history: EYEcenter Optometric began on May
16, 1960. This May, the business celebrated 57 years in operation! Initially started
by Dr. Fred Fuerst, the first location was in North Highlands. In 1977, Dr. Lee
joined the practice and in 1983 Dr. Randy Fuerst was added to the team, joining
his father, Dr. Fuerst senior. In 1985, the business moved from North Highlands
to Citrus Heights. They have since grown to include four locations: Gold River,
Citrus Heights, Rocklin and Folsom. There are nine doctors on staff, four of
whom are partners and five are associates.

EYEcenter Optometric has a mission to provide the very best in eye care. This
includes not only eye exams, but also diagnosing and treating most medical eye
conditions. The EYEcenter doctors are highly trained and some of the diagnoses
they treat include: dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, emergencies such as corneal
abrasion, corneal ulcers and much more. They also work with children and adults
who are struggling in school with reading and comprehension. Finally, they offer
a program called Vision Therapy that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of
conditions in areas such as eye muscle weakness (tracking, eye alignment and
focusing, visual information processing and vision-related learning challenges).

Patriotic Pride

This summer, while I try to explain to my boys that creating the
ultimate (fictional) world in Minecraft isn’t important – although
the basics of it are similar to the burgeoning American back in the
day and hopefully for today (build, create, dream, do) – I also have
to explain and remind them that working hard and working for what
you want, isn’t easy. It isn’t as easy as pressing a button or moving a
mouse.
When the younger generation understands that the previous one
worked hard for what they have – whether it’s the freedom to speak
or the freedom to go find a job. I show them a history rich with
experience and wisdom and that they’re no different than anyone
else. I believe each person is responsible for their own success.
American was built on hard work. That’s it. I remind them of the
saying, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well” because doing
something well and working hard for it is worth it, for you and for
everyone around you.
This poem by Walt Whitman reminds us how working hard, and
reaping the reward of that hard work, is as American as it gets.
Heather is a freelance writer living in beautiful Gold River. When she’s
not writing, reading or wrangling her two boys and husband, she can
be found selling vintage clothing at her online shop, thrifting and doing

I

ntelligent businessman David Sarnoff was a leader of the
Radio Corporation of American for approximately 51 years
and a brother in the Freemason organization. He once said
– “Work and live to serve others, to leave the world a little better
than you found it and garner for yourself as much peace of mind as
you can. This is happiness.” And he was not the only Freemason to
leave us with words of wisdom. Masons have been active locally in
Sacramento since 1850. By 1860, there were 130 Masonic lodges
in California with membership numbering over 5,000. At least
19 California governors and four California Senators have been
Masons. Today, the Grand Lodge of California is one of the largest
in the world (www.Sac40.net).
For many non-members, the Masons are an intriguing
organization shrouded in secrecy and have been the subject of
many interesting conspiracy theories and popular television
programs and movies. Yet, most Masonic scholars believe that
the organization began from a simple tradition of hard-working,
castle-building stonemasons during the Middle Ages who wanted
to support one another and their families in times of sickness,
injury, widowhood and so on. Eventually non-skilled workers
asked to join the organization for the many advantages that it
offered and the craft guild became more of a fraternity (www.
Sac40.net).
Gary Morrissette, a Mason in the truest sense, owned WilMor
Plumbing with a partner for over 30 years. He retired last year.
A proud member of the Sacramento Masons, he was born
locally and has remained here his entire life, aside from periodic
traveling out of the country. He is passionate about participating
in the brotherhood of the Masons as well as his Harley Davidson
motorcycle and playing racket ball. He also loves spending
time with his three adorable pups: a Puggle named Dixie, mini
Schnauzer named Jake and Yorkie/Pom mix, Macie. If Gary could
have any career other than his own, he would be a professional
baseball player.
Mr. Morrissette has also done volunteer work with St. Hope, an
organization that began in 1989 as a portable classroom located
on the grounds of Sacramento High School. Originally an after
school program, the current version of St. Hope was founded by
Oak Park-native Kevin Johnson and is a nonprofit community
development corporation whose mission is “to revitalize the
Oak Park community through public education and economic
development,” while also “leveling the educational playing field for
all students.” What began as an after-school program for 12 young
men has transitioned into charter public schools serving nearly
2,000 students, grades TK through high school (www.StHope.org).
Mrs. Morrissette is originally from Virginia and has worked
for Elliott Homes as a Lead Sales Agent for the last 16 plus years.
Her current subdivision is in Folsom and she has spent her entire
adult career in real estate. She loves working for Elliott Homes and
says, “It has truly been a dream job.” While it is a career that keeps
her very busy, she also enjoys cooking, collecting cookbooks and
spending time with the Morrissette pups, of course.
Gary and Cheryl are both Foodies and love taking overnight
trips to the Sutter Creek area, San Francisco and Bodega Bay. They

enjoy most types of food “as long as its good,” but are especially fond of Thai and a great
steak from Morton’s. Due to their love of visiting Costa Rica, the couple built a second
home there about 10 years ago. If given the choice to travel anywhere else, they would
choose Spain or England. This June, the Morrissettes celebrated their 19th year together
and have spent nearly 16 of those years married. They originally met playing on a co-ed
softball team together and are now a combined family with seven children total. All of
their children are grown and Cheryl’s kids reside on the East Coast.
After spending a short 1/3 of a year in Enterprise Village, they already know it’s a
perfect fit. Though they have been fans of this area for a while, Gary’s recent retirement
gave the couple the idea to downsize. They found the appropriate-sized home in the
Village and immediately loved it, stating, “Once we saw our court, we knew this was the
right decision.” They enjoy the quiet that Gold River has to offer and the standards that

the community strives for in cleanliness and gorgeous green lawns. They also love
their closeness in proximity to Folsom, where they previously resided, giving them the
opportunity to continue visiting their old favorite places while also exploring new ones
closer to home.
Gary has met many of the Morrissettes’ Gold River neighbors and Cheryl looks
forward to meeting more very soon when she has some weekend time off. They are
also really enjoying our warm summer weather and the opportunity to get outside and
“enjoy Gold River the right way.” So, if you happen to see them walking their dogs on a
nearby trail, feel free to say “Hi” to your new neighbors!

Built more than 150 years ago, Union Station helped put the
mile-high city of Denver on the map, bringing booming opportunity
for the city during train travel’s glory days in the 1920’s when there
were 60-80 trains coming and going every day. But, following the
popularity of airline and automobile travel, the old train station was
on the verge of being torn down.
It’s been a long wait, but in April of 2016 Denver completed a
multi-million dollar renovation of Union Station and began rail
service every 15 minutes for $9.00 between the airport and its
beloved station in the heart of downtown. Fondly referred to as the
city’s “Living Room”, Union Station is now a vibrant gathering place
where there is something for everyone.
At Union Station’s center is the Great Hall, an elegant sweeping
room full of nostalgia. Glistening chandeliers and ornate white
molding emphasize the soaring ceilings as the enormous arched
windows flood the room with sunlight. While enjoying a week’s stay
in Denver last summer, I returned several times just to “hang out” in
the beautiful 1914 Beaux-Arts lobby to relax with my iPad and sip
coffee in one of its many cozy chairs or sofas.
Ten hip restaurants that surround the Station serve some of
Denver’s best local cuisine around the clock. Visitors are attracted
to its eclectic boutique gift shops and a delightful miniature version
of Denver’s most beloved bookstore, The Tattered Cove. Many visit
the popular Terminal Bar, the fabulously restored old ticket station
that now dispenses Colorado spirits and 30 regional draft beers. All
are centered on the luxurious Crawford Hotel, which offers tours of
Union Station every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 1 p.m.
In addition, the station provides easy access to microbreweries
around Lower Downtown (LoDo), Coors Field Baseball Park, and
the 16th Street Mall. Union Station, a short walk from the city
center’s hotels, is also a convenient meeting place for small group
day tours, including the glaciated peaks of Rocky Mountain National
Park, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and famed Mt. Evans, America’s
highest paved road. I really appreciated that there was no need to

rent a car in order to enjoy these carefree tours to Denver’s uniquely
majestic backyard.
Less than a block from Union Station, it was also easy to re-live
Denver’s vibrant past before the lobby fireplace at the boutique
Oxford Hotel, filled with fascinating historical tales. During the war
years, troop trains arrived to fill the Oxford and mothers of Denver
servicemen served coffee, doughnuts, and hot turkey sandwiches
to the troops 24 hours a day. The beguiling red lighting of the
Oxford Hotel’s Cruise Room bar, a replica of a bar on the Queen
Mary, features “Cheers!” panels from around the world. They are all
originals, minus one-- the Nazi Germany panel.
As I boarded the train at Union Station for the 30-minute ride to
the airport for my return non-stop flight to Sacramento, it was with
so many of the fun-filled memories that Denver’s mile-high city has
to offer.

The Sacramento Choral
Society and Orchestra’s
European Masterworks

T

he Sacramento Community Center Theater is a beautifully
designed space with wonderful acoustics… a perfect
venue for this presentation of Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42 and
Rossini’s Stabat Mater (Sad Mother). Had the music not been so
compelling, it would have been easy to doze in the very comfortable
seating. This concert marked the conclusion of the Sacramento
Choral Society & Orchestra’s (SCSO) 21st season and was part of
their European Masterworks series.
I went early so I could hear Conductor Donald Kendrick’s preconcert lecture about the program. Kendrick read from the program
notes with ease and you can find them in the program. Psalm 42 was
written in 1837 while Mendelssohn and his new wife, Cécile, were on
their honeymoon. Kendrick really became transported into the music
when he gave his commentary with audio excerpts from the program.
This is where you can easily see his profound attachment to the music
he performs.
As I looked around, it was impressive to see young and old alike
who had come to hear this concert. If you know of or appreciate a
young person who needs to be introduced to or encouraged by great
music, please consider an evening with the SCSO. This is money well
spent to ensure a rich cultural future for them!
SCSO Board President James McCormick introduced the concert
by dedicating it to Major Lloyd Kenyon, a veteran who passed away
this week and who also was Kendrick’s uncle. Kendrick welcomed
concertmistress Cindy Lee and the soprano soloist Marina Harris
onstage for a round of applause and we were underway. I’ve always
admired the way SCSO has provided supertitles for all their foreign
language concerts. The Mendelssohn was in German and the Rossini
in Italian and both had supertitles translated into English so you
could follow along without distraction from the performance.
The opening alto melody of the Mendelssohn was followed by
impressive sensitivity for a chorus of this size, particularly in the
pianissimo sections. The phrasing and the balance between chorus
and orchestra were excellent. As every conductor knows, a large
increase in chorus size allows for a different repertoire but can be
limiting in flexibility. I could not discern any limitations in this wellrehearsed large chorus.
The SCSO was joined this night by special guests: the Sacramento
State University Chorus. I estimated the total chorus size to be about
185, which was certainly not required for this concert, but it was very
enjoyable to hear that kind of choral power in Kendrick’s capable
hands. He has a very expressive and yet precise conducting style.
The next two movements had some lovely oboe counterpoint
that was simply delicious. The opening oboe lines of the Arie were
stunning and soprano soloist Marina Harris’ powerful and lyrical
voice was perfectly suited for this piece. Her tone contributed a
depth to this work that fit nicely. The Rezitativ featured the soprano
again and the counterpoint between soprano and 3-part women’s
chorus had a beautiful flow. The 4th movement returned to full

chorus and was very enjoyable, although it was noticeable that some
of the German vowels were not in total agreement.
The 5th movement demonstrated some athletic soprano leaps
which were negotiated with ease while the 6th movement gave the
quartet of male soloists an exquisite chance at a calming influence
against the backdrop of the soprano soloist. The men’s quartet of
special guests included Kirk Dougherty (tenor), Malcom MacKenzie
(baritone) and the two soloists from the chorus, Chester Pidduck
(tenor) and Shawn Spiess (baritone). Although I thoroughly enjoyed
the soprano solo, the question and answer form of this section
showed a confidence and smoothness in the men’s quartet that made
it one of my favorite parts of this concert. It not only demonstrated
Mendelssohn’s brilliant writing, but also gave you the impression that
these four gentlemen had been singing together for years.
The final movement gave all the performers a chance at a Händelesque triumphant conclusion with, “Praise be to the Lord, the God
of Israel, from now on until eternity!” This celebratory ending was an
excellent finish to the first half of tonight’s concert.
During intermission, I noticed a placard on display in the lobby
from Governor Jerry Brown. It was a letter from December 2014 to
Kendrick thanking him for 30 years of excellence in service to our
Sacramento community. Bravo Dr. Kendrick!
The second half was the wonderful Stabat Mater by Rossini, which
was taken from a 13th-century poem and took 10 years for him to
write. It centers around the story of the Virgin Mary’s vigil at the
crucifixion.
The Introduction opened with a lovely string and woodwind
motif and rather quickly moved into a wide variety of dynamics with
full choral and quartet accompaniment. For a smaller orchestral
ensemble (approximately 46 in number), their excellent dynamic
instincts served this format well, particularly with a chorus of this
size. The balance was outstanding, although my personal preference
would have been for a bit more brass accents with a piece this
dramatic.
After the opening broad minor chordal movements, the Aria
opened with a jaunty melody, which provided stark contrast to the
dramatic tenor lines to come. Tenor Kirk Dougherty’s warmth really
shone in this movement, particularly in the brief a cappella sections
and the athletic cadenza towards the end.
Mezzo-soprano Layna Chianakas and soprano Marina Harris
followed with the warm Duet. I must confess I am more familiar with
Rossini’s operas than with Stabat Mater. I found it a bit odd that the
Duet section was mostly in a major key mode even though the text is,
“Who is the person who would not weep seeing the Mother of Christ in
such agony?” Still, both women made it a delight to listen to.
The Aria by baritone Malcolm MacKenzie — which moved from
major to minor — was an elegant, yet bold treatment of Rossini’s text.

I could have listened to him all night.
The lovely duet in the 5th movement between the chorus and
MacKenzie was wonderful. The chorus had beautiful and sensitive
phrasing and their Latin pronunciation was exceptional.
The 6th movement of the Sancta Mater quartet had Chianakas
and MacKenzie paired as one duet and Harris and Dougherty paired
as the other. The two duets and the melody wove in and out of each
other like a well-orchestrated dance and highlighted again Rossini’s
masterful writing.
The woodwinds had again a gorgeous opening in the 7th Cavatina
movement, which also gave Chianakas a little more upper range
room into which she soared effortlessly.
The Inflammatus movement had a dramatic opening with brass
and a bold soprano entrance where again, my preference would have
been for more brass attack. The French horn provided a delicious
background to this section where the soprano obbligato and chorus
accompaniment were chilling and beautiful at the same time.
The a cappella quartet in the 9th movement showed just how
experienced these wonderful soloists were. Pure delight!
The Finale was a driving, energetic fugue where the tenors
handled the counterpoint adeptly and the whole chorus was with
Kendrick from beginning to end. I loved the brilliant low strings and
woodwind combinations throughout. The entire group comes to a
complete stop and Rossini re-inserts the musical ideas from the 1st
movement all over again to wrap the whole thing into one complete
package.
There was an immediate standing ovation and hollers of
appreciation for the chorus. How often do you get a chance to hear
a chorus of this size perform major masterworks? Fortunately for us
here in Sacramento…several times a year!

embers of the Gold River Community Association
(GRCA) Villager's Club had a busy spring filled with
social activities, including a River Cats game and a day
trip to the Sacramento Medical History Museum, in addition to all
the regularly scheduled activities.
Upcoming plans include a day trip to the Jan Shrem and Maria
Manetti Museum of Art, along with a tour of the arboretum, a
coffee with speaker Ember Nordhaus, Sales and Marketing Director
of Eskaton - Gold River, a Lunch Bunch garden party, a luncheon
at Shahrzad Fine Persian Cuisine restaurant and all the regularly
scheduled interest groups - mah jongg, bridge, bunko, men's poker,
book clubs and yoga.
Villagers president Brenda Aarons encourages all GRCA members
to join the Gold River Villagers, meet your neighbors and have
some fun!

The Gold River Villagers are a social group for members of the
GRCA. The group serves as a vehicle for meeting and forming

Classic Homemade Hummus
By Amber Berens-Drupiewski
This simple offering is a great addition to any event, summer BBQ,
bagged lunch or just as a healthy snack. If you’ve never made your own
hummus, what are you waiting for?! It’s so easy to do, super quick,
requires few ingredients and tastes sooo much better than store-bought.
It’s also packed full of fiber and is naturally vegan, dairy-free and glutenless. The variation options are endless, too! I like to sprinkle Trader Joe’s
“Everything But The Bagel” spice mixture on top, although you can also
add pesto, sundried tomatoes, feta, cinnamon, crushed red pepper, olives,
various herbs, etc. Make a single batch for at home or double it
for parties!
Serves 6-8.

Ingredients:
• 1 15oz. can of chickpeas, organic if possible
(also called Garbanzo beans)
• 2 cloves of garlic
• 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

• ½ tsp ground cumin

Add all ingredients except the water to a food processor or
blender and combine until smooth. Add small amounts of the
water until you’ve reached your desired consistency. Adjust
seasoning to taste. Garnish and serve with veggie chips, cut
vegetables, crackers, etc.

• Approximately ¼ cup water

Refrigerate leftovers and enjoy within about 3 days!

• 3 tbsp Tahini
• 2 tbsp olive oil (preferably extra virgin)

• Salt and pepper to taste
