WHAT DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE FISHING INDUSTRY ?
A selection of responses recorded during the course of the exhibition in Newlyn
Very sadly in decline unless the government stands up for local industry.
Newlyn resident
Uncertain, but will evolve into a smaller efficient Newlyn fleet, I’m sure.
Newlyn resident and ex fisheries officer
What future!
Fisherman’s wife
Good at present, but no youth in the industry.
Fisherman
Very vulnerable – too much fighting/politics and not enough grasp of the need to harness a sustainable resource.
Newlyn resident
It can survive if the government and Brussels see sense and allow the fishermen to control the stocks
by forming ‘sensible’ boxes within spawning grounds.
Newlyn resident, involved in the industry
Not good – we have greedily depleted the world’s stock of fish.
Newlyn resident
Sad. Common Market regulations are crippling.
Visitor to Cornwall
I am sure there is a future but maybe not as we know it today.
Newlyn resident involved in the industry
Concerned. It seems incredible that the fishing industry is so precarious when it is so important.
Newlyn resident
Sadly, I feel, due to fish quotas and rewards for de-commissioning boats, fuel prices etc. it’s dying.
Newlyn resident
Although there is a great demand out there for the quality food that is fish, the government is doing
very little to help and safeguard the industry. It reflects its lack of understanding of the countryside too.
Visitor to Cornwall
Dire. Terrible waste of fish due to the quota system.
Newlyn resident
Government needs to listen to the fishermen on what’s to be done.
Involved in the industry
Precarious if foreign boats are allowed to break the rules and locals are not.
Newlyn resident
It will survive, but not in its present form. The government (of any colour) DOES NOT CARE.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN TO NEWLYN
IF THE BRITISH FISHING INDUSTRY CONTINUES TO DECLINE ?
A selection of responses recorded during the course of the exhibition in Newlyn
Will lose its identity.
Visitor to Cornwall
Not something I wish to contemplate.
Involved in the industry
It will turn into a tourist attraction for the wrong reasons.
Fisherman’s wife
It’s already had a massive impact on families and can only get worse.
Involved in the industry
It is getting to be extinct and will be the ruining of Newlyn.
Newlyn resident
It will have to move with the times and diversify.
Newlyn resident
Dread to think!! It will have a massive effect on the community.
Penwith resident
It would be very sad for Newlyn. It is tragic that the Pilchard Factory has closed.
Visitor to Cornwall
It’ll change from an industrial village to another Mevagissey/Mousehole, or it’ll become
a Cornish retirement community.
Newlyn resident
It will become a yuppie second home village like most of Cornwall’s pretty places, to the detriment of the locals.
Newlyn resident
I sense that by moving towards a more marina based economy, Newlyn is jumping before it is pushed.
I believe this is a mistake and that the port should be developed as a viable centre of excellence in the industry.
Visitor to Cornwall
Could be a great future, but I fear it won’t be without a change from parochial fishing politics and nimbyism.
Newlyn resident
More foreign boats will use the port. The local fleet will be composed of mostly small vessels.
Fisherman
It will become a ghost town, businesses will close, and souls will be lost to alcohol and the past.
Fisherman’s daughter
It will be the death of it.
Penwith resident
