Marilyn Padoan Wheatley is an LD23 PC who is
committed to the idea that government should
work for everyone, not just a privileged few.
Marilyn is passionate about providing our citizens
a world-class public education; the protection and
stewardship of our public lands; the fundamental
right of every citizen to vote; and the equal
treatment of women, immigrants, LGBTQ people,
and other marginalized communities.
Having immigrated to the U.S. from Argentina at
the age of 12, Marilyn is very appreciative of the
educational opportunities she was afforded in the
United States. She attended public schools and
universities in Michigan and Pennsylvania, and has
earned a master’s degree in Economics, and a
bachelor’s degree in International Business &
Accounting. She feels very strongly that the same
learning opportunities must be available to every
person, no matter their race, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. An
educated and informed populace is the very foundation of American democracy, and that is why she
has worked with SOS Arizona to collect and verify signatures to refer SB 1431 and stop the expansion of
the school vouchers program in Arizona.
As an immigrant, she understands what it is like to be an outsider. When she began attending public
schools in the U.S., she did not know how to read or write in English. As one of only a small handful of
Latino immigrants in rural Michigan, she was isolated by a multitude of cultural barriers and accepted
mostly by other immigrants and students that didn’t ‘fit in’. But still she persisted, and by focusing on
her studies she earned the English Language Award in her 7th grade class after just one year.
Marilyn knows the professional challenges that women face in male-dominated industries. After
finishing her undergraduate education, she began working at a community bank in southeast Michigan
as a personal banker. Most of the women at the bank worked as tellers or secretaries, and the higher
positions seemed reserved for an exclusive group of non-female people. Within two years, she became
one of only two women branch managers in a network of 17 branch offices, and was awarded the
Chairman’s Club Award, the company’s highest honor in the sales category. She persisted.
As an immigrant, woman, and a strong LGBTQ ally and friend, Marilyn realizes that a person’s abilities
and potential should not be defined based on their gender, race, or who they love. The United States of
America is an amazing country, and we can be even better if we encourage and include everyone.
If elected Secretary for MCDP, Marilyn will represent the county party with integrity. She will strive to
constantly espouse the Democratic values of respect and civil discourse, support economic and business
policies that benefit working class people, and work tirelessly to turn Arizona into a blue state in 2018!
