APRIL MEETING
Our final meeting at our current location will be this
month. The club has been meeting here since September
1999. A silent auction will be held of member donation of
gently used items. Please come early with your items to get
the paperwork filled out and item(s) displayed. Donations do
not have to be metal detector related.
Bring a neighbor or friend and participate in our
membership drive. You will get points toward winning a
silver dollar or paid 2014 membership. If your guest
becomes a member, you receive extra points. (1 per guest, 2
for a guest joining!)
Thanks in advance to Paul Hamlin who will be providing
our mystery item. Be sure to bring all items found to the Tall
Tales Table. You never know what the mystery item will be.

RAFFLE
The next club raffle is a Kodak waterproof camera
(donated by John Presslein) and a book "Historic Photos of
PB County" (donated by Jim Sharp). There will be two
winners. Spots are $1 each.

BURIED COIN CACHE - $25 REWARD!
FIRST CLUE:
I am buried in a "prince of a park" where there are many mini
parks inside........
SECOND CLUE:
"Enter park at the Congress entrance and follow palm tree
line in middle median and see 25 MPH sign. Pass stop sign
and continue straight."
THIRD CLUE:
Pass Stop Sign and at Center Drive Pavilion make left and
park by the fence parking. Follow white path to lonely palm
tree and dig 2 feet in front of palm and the treasure will be
yours.....
The buried item is a small brown medicine container filled
with clad coins.
It is placed in a Ziploc® bag.
Burial of cache and the clues are provided by Mindy
Spiroch. If the cache is found by a club member, that person
will receive a $25 prize AND earn the right to bury the next
cache! Good luck everyone! Please remember - always fill
your holes!

Central Florida Metal Detecting Club

First Annual Central Florida Sunshine Shootout
May 4, 2013
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Early registration = $99.00/ hunter.
After April 15th, 2013 = $125.00/hunter.

The registration fee includes a catered mid-day meal
and multiple hunts. The Shoot-Out will be advertised
nationwide and four park pavilions have been reserved.
The hunt will include silver prizes. Kellyco will be a
vendor and we are currently working with other
vendors from around the country. Included will be a
family hunt for a small fee. We want this to become a
yearly event.

Let's travel to Sebastian and spend the day meeting new
treasure hunters. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at Cracker Barrel on 45h
Street for breakfast and then caravan north. Since this event
doesn't start till noon - maybe we can metal detect a beach
and/or go to McLarty Treasure Museum.

FEBRUARY MEETING MINUTES
On Valentine’s Day evening 32 members attended the
Gold Coast Treasure Club Meeting. President McNew
opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to our
Flag by all members. He then announced that effective in
May the club meetings will no longer be held at the
Dreyer Park Garden Club and at present the board is
looking for a new location. He asked the membership to
help by presenting ideas and information on possible
rental locations. At present the Board is still seeking ideas
and would be pleased to hear from you if you can help.
The program for the evening was the Best Finds of
2012, Winners were Steve Hamedl for Best Platinum,
Best Gold with Stones, Best Gold and Best Silver. Best
American Coin was won by Irving Smith and Most
Unusual by Ed Morin.
Linda Bennett, Hunt Master, received a great letter
with pictures from member Ken Lubinski. Ken wanted
to share the exciting hunting he is doing up in the
panhandle of Florida. The Good Will Ambassador Award
will be presented at the March or April meeting.
Member Irving Smith did a show and tell. He has
been a member for 21 years and has worked with some of
the best metal detecting people in England and France.
Irving showed the members some framed great coins he
has managed to find detecting since 1995. And last but
not least he showed his collection of keys for 21 years.
The collection is as long as he is tall, he could hardly lift
it!
Vice President Frank Nash is absent due to being in
the Jupiter Hospital. Frank is now home and will be
undergoing additional surgery in the near future.
Return Certificates presented to Ed Morin for
returning a cell phone to the rightful owner and Gary
Spiroch for returning a diamond ring to the rightful
owner.
Amy Hamedl fooled everyone participating in the
Mystery Prize Stumper contest with a “SECRETLY
wrapped poker chip”! March’s volunteer is Radina
Malchev.
Paul Hamlin won $40 by playing the 50/50 Raffle!
Thanks go to Marilyn Smith for helping out at the
entrance table! And special thanks to Nick Mosca for his
donations for the door prizes!

FIRE IN YOUR GOODIE BAG!
A 9-volt battery is a fire hazard because the positive
and negative posts are on top, right next to one another.
If the ends come in contact with anything metal such as
aluminum foil, steel wool, paperclip, other batteries, etc.,
this will cause the battery to heat up and ignite a fire.
To store, keep in original packaging or keep ends
covered. For disposal, make sure the positive and
negative posts are safely wrapped in electrical tape.

MARCH MEETING MINUTES
With 37 guest and members present President McNew
called our March meeting to order. Gary McNew,
President presented a discussion on Troy Ounces, DWT
(pennyweights) Grains and Gains with the assistance of
the internet via the club’s projector.
Member Pete Schneider donated an Alaskan gold
nugget for the club’s next raffle. Thank you Pete! The
nugget weights .34 grains. Our present raffle is an Kodak
underwater camera and a photo book of Historic Palm
Beach County. Spots are $1 or 6 for $5.
Marge Hamlin, Gary McNew and Frank Nash were
hospitalized this past month, but apparently recovering
nicely as they were in attendance! Good to see you all!
Vice President Frank Nash spoke of the possibility of
a wild hunt on 5 acres of land in Jupiter. Thanks go to
Frank for getting permission for the club to detect the
property.
John Lobota will be getting back to Frank with some
other locations of abandon homes in the Jupiter area with
the hopes that Frank will be able to get permission for
hunts in the near future.
After presenting the program, Gary showed what
happened to his truck on the screen!
Treasurer, Ed D’Amato reported $780.45 in the bank.
He stressed we need support from our membership by
buying raffle tickets, door prize tickets and 50/50 tickets.
Mystery Prize stumper was provided by Jan Smirnow
– a bulldog clip – no one had the item. Paul Hamlin
volunteered to bring in the Mystery Item in April!
The 50/50 was won by Betty Laur, a cool $48.00!
May’s Meeting will be held in the Science Center
across the street from the Garden Club!

The GCTC recognizes members who provide selfless
service to our community. The first time a member returns
an item, that individual receives a metal detecting pin
(handcrafted by Steve Hoskins) to wear on his or her hat,
in addition to a certificate of appreciation. Future returns
are recognized by additional certificates. Kudos to all club
members who go out of their way to return items to their
owners. The actions of each of our “Ambassadors of
Goodwill” enhance the public’s perception of our hobby!

The Spirochs were on the island of Antigua during one
of their frequent cruises. A waitress from Sandals lost her
engagement ring when she was waving to someone. One
of the guests that was staying at Sandals saw Mindy and
Gary on the beach metal detecting and asked them to look
for the lost ring. Gary was able to find it and the couple
were rewarded with FREE DRINKS ....

ONGOING CLUB PROJECTS

MARCH 23 JUPITER HUNT

Our club collects eye glasses, foreign coins,
miscellaneous items of costume jewelry/tokens/metal toys,
pull tabs, and empty ink cartridges. Give Jan Smirnow or
Linda Bennett your donations.

18 members showed up to hunt the 4.47 acres that once
held an old house and just recently had been a nursery
before being put up for sell. Most of the area had lots of
fill added that included small rocks and stones that made
digging very difficult. Only clad coins found. But it was
still a success in that members took frequent breaks to
talk with each other and exchange tips.

CHALLENGE LEVELS
Do you enjoy a good challenge? If so, then you should
join the quest to master the five challenge levels! This fun
program offers a coin reward simply for finding a specific
group of targets (much like a scavenger hunt) and showing
those finds to the hunt master (Linda Bennett). You can
find information about the challenge levels in your new
member folder or at club meetings. For questions or
explanations, come early to a meeting and speak with
Linda.

Or Mutilated Coins:
If coin or any other metal is mixed with the currency,
carefully remove it. Any fused, melted, or otherwise
mutilated coins should be sent to the U.S. Mint at
following address for evaluation:

For cases that are expected to take longer than 8 weeks
to process, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing will
issue a written confirmation of receipt.

Mail, Return Receipt Requested.” Insuring the shipment is
the responsibility of the sender.
Personal deliveries of mutilated currency to the Bureau
of Engraving and Printing are accepted between the hours
of 8:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M., Monday through Friday,
except holidays. The BEPs Office of Compliance,
Mutilated Currency Division is located at 14th and C
Streets, SW, Washington, DC.

WARNKE MEMORIAL HUNT/ PICNIC

The Jim Warnke Memorial Hunt was attended by 24 members on Saturday, March 2nd. Various American coins (V
nickels, clad dimes and quarters, wheat and Indian head pennies, one 2 cent coin, Susan B Anthony and Gold clad dollars
were found by all. Prizes were for token marked pennies, they either a silver half dollar, silver quarter or silver dime. A
lot of laughing was done by the participants, i.e. everyone who participated won a White’s Metal Detecting Water Bottle,
Pen and a silver coin or a White’s Pen and a pair of folding scissors in a gold box! We certainly received a lot of those
items from RTG Store; White’s Metal Detecting Company and Kellyco.
A BIG THANKS goes to Linda for a HUNT WELL DONE!
