CLUB HUNT

Our board of directors came up with a list of program
ideas that we can “pull out of the hat” during months
when we either don’t have a speaker scheduled or when
unanticipated last minute cancellations occur. Such “round
table format” discussions have been popular with our
members in the past due to their casual structure and
because everyone gets a chance to participate, if they so
desire. Our June 11th meeting will feature a round table
discussion in which members will be encouraged to share
their vacation memories, whether of trips that were
designed around treasure hunting, included limited
hunting, or that included no hunting whatsoever. It’s up to
you. After all, this is YOUR meeting, so share with us
whichever vacation memories you wish to share. All we
ask is that individual stories be kept brief so that all who
wish to participate will have their chance to do so.
We extend our thanks in advance to new members Ed
D’Amato and Tessa Durand for volunteering to provide
the refreshments and to Nikolay Malchev for agreeing to
try to stump us with the Mystery Item this month.

It's time for our summer scavenger hunt. June, July and
August are not only too hot for many of our members to
hunt; these months are also popular for summer vacations.
Starting on June 11, keep track of your finds and mark
them off the scavenger hunt list provided on page eleven.
Bring the list and those items found from June 11 through
September 10 to the September meeting. The top three
scavengers will win prizes.
If you’re interested in water hunting, summer often
brings better conditions for such hunting, plus water helps
keep skin cool. Try it out! Water hunting experts Nikolay
Malchev and Jason Petenbrink are always willing to
share their tips. Want inspiration to try water hunting?
You are urged to attend a South Florida Treasure Hunter’s
Club meeting at the Hollywood Beach Community Center
at 1201 S. Ocean Drive in Hollywood. Their meetings,
which start at 7 p.m., will be held on the first Thursday in
July and August, then the first Monday for each month
thereafter. (Rumor has it that SFTHC members have gills.)
Ben Smith is planning an independent hunt sometime
during the summer. He has obtained a new appliance,
which he will dismantle. He’ll then hide the pieces so we
can find them, and then determine what the appliance is.

before each club meeting as a way to catch up with

MAY MEETING
With 38 in attendance, President Mindy Spiroch
welcomed guests Kathy and Phil Marro from
Hollywood (South Florida Treasure Hunter’s Club
members) and new members Tessa Durand and Ed D'
Amato from Wellington. Carmelo Basilico was the
lucky winner of the $50 Publix Gift Card raffle.

The board of directors had to think fast to come up
with a program when Jennifer Plant – who was
scheduled to present a much anticipated program on
CPR – didn’t arrive. (Gary McNew later reported that
Jennifer had an accident on the way to our meeting, but
she is, thankfully, alright. We will reschedule.) Members
and guests were invited to share tall tales and tips, which
everyone seemed to enjoy. Highlights are provided
below and elsewhere in this newsletter. Thank you, Ken
Lubinski, for providing wonderful refreshments!

TALL TALES
John Presslein reported that Irving Smith recently
traveled to Rome for a vacation. He took his metal
detector with him, but was disappointed that he couldn’t
find anywhere to detect – there was no beach!
Stacey deLucia told about metal detecting Palm
Beach during a period of bad rip currents. She witnessed
the rescue of four victims. Unfortunately, one man died.
Jim Smith was asked by a lifeguard at Lantana
Beach to look for an ear cuff style diamond earring that
was lost along the Dunes Café wall. He was
unsuccessful. Jim said the lifeguard snorkels and finds
lost items in the crevices of the rocks just off shore.

TIPS
Jason Petenbrink recently got stung in the neck by a
jellyfish while water hunting. He recommends that water
hunters carry ammonia and Benadryl with them to the
beach for first aid, in case they get stung.
Nick Mosca recommends the use of Accent (meat
tenderizer) for a first aid treatment for jellyfish stings.
Just make a paste and glob it on the stung area. Vinegar
is also a good choice.
Joe Cook recommends soaking corroded pennies in a
vinegar and salt mixture for a few hours. This will clean
up the corrosion.
Mindy Spiroch opened an account at BankAtlantic
so she could use the coin counting machine free of
charge. She then deposits the money into her account.
Non-account holders are charged an 8 percent fee for the
service. Mindy also said she deposits any damaged coins
that the machine rejects and the bank reimburses her at
face value for them.
Tom Lieberman has discovered that the coin
machine he uses will keep any corroded dimes instead of
discarding them like it does for other types of coins, but
he doesn’t get cash credit for those corroded dimes.

MYSTERY ITEM
New members often wonder “WHAT the heck is a Mystery
Item?” Each month one club member volunteers to try to
stump fellow members by choosing a secret item (thus the
mystery!) that is revealed after the break. If an item in a
member's Tall Tales Table display matches the mystery item,
that member wins a silver quarter! So it pays to bring ALL
your finds! Sorry gang…the person supplying the Mystery
Item does not get the silver quarter if they stump the club.
BUT, they DO get a free door prize ticket for their effort!

May’s Mystery Item was supplied by Jim Sharp and
he stumped everyone with a collar stay. WTG, Jim!

Ben Smith hosted another great hunt at Jupiter Beach
with 500 foreign and 500 American coins buried, in
addition to costume jewelry and other miscellaneous items,
including such oddities as binoculars. The thunderstorms
held off, but after 45 minutes of hunting in the relentless
heat, many hunters were wishing for a few rain drops.
Twenty-three club members participated. Seven
members arrived at 6:15 a.m. for breakfast at Cracker
Barrel. Six of the prizes were provided by the club and the
remainder of prizes was donated by Ben. Prize winners

RECYCLING & DONATIONS
Jan Smirnow collects cell phones and used ink
cartridges to raise money for the GCTC. Jan is also
collecting pull tabs that will be donated to the Ronald
McDonald House. Please SAVE yours and give to Jan.
Note from Jan: “Thanks to our members for donating
those ink cartridges for the club. It really helps our
kitty. However, please note that only the real cartridges
purchased from office supply stores qualify for us to
sell. Generic ink cartridges are not accepted. Again,
thanks for those donations and keep them coming.”
Stacey deLucia will continue to collect prescription
glasses and sunglasses for the South Florida Lion’s Club.
John Lobota will accept member donations of metals
such as brass, copper and lead weights that we find while
metal detecting. He will take them to the recycling plant to
sell for the metal content. All cash raised will help to
replenish our treasury, so please see John to donate! Don’t
let all that digging go to waste!

Our club, along with the South Florida Treasure Club,
continues to collect foreign coins to donate towards a
summer camp for handicapped children. This is a yearround project. If you have coins to donate, please see
Linda Bennett, who will make sure your donation goes to

cars after reading Keith Wills request in the May
newsletter. All items were mailed June 1.

Jimmy Chodan invites anyone who will visit the state
of New York during the spring, summer or fall to come
hunt with him. He lives 100 miles north of New York City
on the Connecticut-Massachusetts border. If you will be in

The Ice Cream Surprise!!
“Eddie, my two son's & I (Tessa) took a 12 hr trip to
S.C. to visit with my parents up in the Cherokee foothills.
God's country. In our travels we made a pit stop to re-fuel
in a small town off of I-95 just before I-26W called
Walterboro.
My youngest son (15) asked Eddie for an ice-cream.
The cashier proceeded to give Eddie his change when a
dime accidentally hit the counter alerting Eddie to the
familiar distinct sound of silver. Eddie excitedly asked the
cashier if she had anymore. The young lady, not to sure
what to think of the situation, returned momentarily with
four little brown bags of silver mercury dimes. Eddie paid
the nice lady $20.00, took the dimes and we quickly and
not very quietly, made our escape. What a find!! (The
dimes dated from1917-1964 and are worth on the average
about $1 ea. or more.)”
The Hiddenite Gem Mines N.C.
“A beautiful trip to Hiddenite N.C. Gem Mine, Eddie the
boys & I decided to try something different.
We arrived around noon after driving four hrs from S.C.
For a small fee, we were each provided with shovels,
buckets & gloves. We were able to dig in the dirt all day.
We washed off our gems in the ice cold water of the slews
to discover beautiful colored rocks. We found quartz,
Amethyst, Emeralds, Rubies, Topaz and many others just
to name a few. We would recommend the trip to anyone.
We had a blast, as long as you don't mind getting dirty.”

PAUL HAMLIN'S TIP OF THE MONTH
Tired of not finding enough stuff? Buddy up and work
new spots. You can drop one hunter at the north end of
the beach and that person can work south to you. This
covers spots that you cannot cover by yourself. Some
places are hard to get access to. Good Hunting!

BURIED COIN CACHE
FIRST CLUE

Once a month we all gather...
SECOND CLUE:
From the parking lot, stroll down the path, passing the
bathroom, which will be on your left, and don't let a
coconut hit you on the head...
Item buried is a small vitamin container 2 3/4" long and 1 1/2 "
in diameter. It is placed in a Ziploc® bag.

Burial of cache and the clues are provided by Mindy and
Gary Spiroch. If found by a club member, that person will
receive a prize of $25 AND earn the right to bury the next
cache! Good luck everyone! Start digging! Be sure to fill all
holes!

MORE MEMBER TIPS
Nikolay Malchev recommends using silicone that is
found at Diver’s Direct to lubricate seals on metal
detecting equipment, especially those machines used in
the water. He also mentioned that most rechargeable
batteries in metal detectors do not have an automatic stop
when the battery is fully recharged, which can shorten
battery life. He recommends a simple timer that you can
buy at hardware stores to charge your battery only for the
time that the manufacturer states in the instruction book.

New Lincoln Penny Debuted
On May 14, the new Lincoln penny went into
circulation. The front side of the coin has Lincoln's face exactly what we're accustomed to. But the “tails” side
shows Lincoln as a young lad, reading a book, during a
break from rail splitting.
This is actually the second new Lincoln penny to debut
this year. The first debuted in February, with the "tails"
side featuring Lincoln's boyhood log cabin.
A third one of Lincoln as a lawyer will come out later
this year, and a fourth will show an unfinished Capital
dome, which represents the site where he took the oath of

KEVIN VINCENT REILLY
19 July 1954—26 April 2009

Our club, treasure hunters, and metal detector
enthusiasts from all parts of the world lost a kindred Irish
spirit with the passing of Kevin Reilly. Kevin was the
founder of Reilly's Treasured Gold, a successful 20-yearold company in Pompano Beach specializing in the
manufacturing of his innovative sand and water scoops
and selling metal-detecting equipment. Kevin authored
two books on hunting Florida beaches: Hurricane
Treasure: The 1715 Beach Sites, which the McLarty
Treasure Museum in Vero Beach reports is its biggest
seller, and The Beach Bank: Your Treasure Teller. He
also made a video on how to hunt the 1715 Treasure Coast
beaches.
Kevin joined our club in 1987. Even though he was
busy with his business, he supported our club in many
ways. His donations toward club hunts and the Holiday
party kept the budget under control. He also gave a 10
percent discount on most items he sold to club members.
Kevin shied away from formal presentations, but his shop
door was always open for advice and sharing of
experiences with anyone visiting in the area.

Kevin Vincent Reilly was born in Elizabeth, NJ to Daniel
and Veronica Reilly and was raised in Rahway. As an
adult, Kevin lived in California before moving to
Pompano Beach, his final hometown. He is survived by
his stepmother, Mary Reilly of Pompano Beach, seven
brothers, two sisters, and 34 nieces and nephews. His
services were scheduled for 1 May 2009 at St. Coleman
Church in Fort Lauderdale, followed by interment in
Pompano Beach Cemetery
They’d love to see him come, how they’d hate to see him
go.
Jolly Mon...swam into the heavens...stayed up in the sky.
Oh oh oh Jolly Mon sing…oh oh oh make the Heavens
ring.

Reilly's Treasured Gold will continue to do business
as usual in memory of Kevin.
