THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE GOLD COAST TREASURE CLUB, INC.
VOLUME 35 NUMBER 1

JANUARY 2010

THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE 7:30 P.M. JANUARY 14
AT THE WEST PALM BEACH GARDEN CLUB IN DREHER PARK
IN WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA

OUR CODE OF ETHICS: HAVE PERMISSION AND DO NO HARM

JANUARY 2010 MEETING 2009 YEARLY BEST FINDS
The New Year is here and that can only mean one
thing. That’s right! It’s time once again for the much
anticipated ANNUAL BEST FINDS CONTEST. This is
one of the highlights of the year, so we hope every
member will participate. Bring your best finds recovered
in 2009 for the Best Finds Contest. The entries must have
been found between January 2009 and December 2009
and while you were a member of the GCTC.
Categories will be: Best Gold; Best Gold with Stones;
Best Silver; Best Costume Jewelry; Best Toy; Best
Token; Best Foreign Coin; Best Relic; Best Platinum
Jewelry; Most Unusual; and Oldest American Coin.
The Oldest American Coin category will be broken down
into subcategories of oldest penny, nickel, dime, quarter,
half-dollar and dollar. Winners of the 10 major categories
will each receive a silver half-dollar and a certificate.
Winners of the American coin subcategories will each
receive a silver quarter and a certificate. Each member is
allowed one entry per category. Winners are decided by
the same voting system that is used for the Monthly Best
Finds Contest. Of course, voting on the Oldest American
Coin will not be necessary – for obvious reasons!
The January meeting will mark the first presentation of
an exciting new annual award. You won’t want to miss the
spectacular unveiling! Especially if YOU are the winner!
Thanks in advance to January’s Mystery Prize
volunteer, Tom Lieberman, who will do his best to try to
stump us. The GCTC will provide the refreshments.
Please don’t forget to return books, DVDs and tapes that
you checked out from the library last month!

Great Club? This year, together with my board members,
we will continue to bring new ideas, leadership, fun, and
hope to have more member participation. A Great Club is
defined by its members and we have, by far, the most
knowledgeable people I know.”
Mindy Spiroch

CHANGING OF THE GUARD
Due to personal commitments, Linda Bennett is
stepping down as Co-editor of The Tinfoil Times and as
website host. Linda will continue her very active – and
vitally important – role in our club as Hunt Master and
will still contribute related articles with photos for the
newsletter. Stacey deLucia will head up The Tinfoil
Times; Gary McNew and Betty Laur have volunteered to
assist. John Lobota will redesign and set up our new
website, then will host and maintain it. (We’ll send out the
new web address as soon as it is ready.) We thank Linda
for her many years of hard work and dedication. She

TREASURE HUNTER OF THE YEAR - 2009
At every meeting, GCTC members bring in their finds from the previous month for the club's Show and Tell table
(AKA Tall Tales Table). Members are encouraged to fill out forms listing their various finds. The Hunt Master
awards points based on the Show and Tell worksheets and Monthly Best Finds. A secret tally is kept from January
to November, and then the top hunters are recognized at the holiday party in December. At our December 10th
party, the Top Snowbird Hunter received a trophy and special picture frame; the Top Woman Hunter received a
trophy and tide clock; Second, Third and Fourth Place winners each received a trophy and a tide clock; and five
members were awarded with Honorable Mention ribbons. The Treasure Hunter of the Year award winner
received a plaque donated by Kellyco in addition to a tide clock. An impressive club trophy - on display at every
meeting - lists every GCTC Treasure Hunter of the Year since 1990. Congratulations to ALL of our winners!

DUBIOUS AWARDS
Winners of these awards were nominated by fellow
members for their “dubious” actions during club events.

Jack Saint earned the Devil Pig Award for
being a bad influence and encouraging fellow
members to partake in a devilishly delicious
dessert at a recent meal after a club hunt. That
hot fudge sundae was sinfully good!

Stacey deLucia, a perennial “dubious award”
recipient, was presented with the Flying Pig
Award for improving her “on time arrival” at
club functions. Some members believed this
would only happen "When Pigs Fly,” but Stacey
proved them wrong on several occasions.

Guy Bachman was credited with having the
best statement of the year. When asked what he
was looking for while using his metal detector at
the beach, he replied, "I’m looking for WWII
landmines!" This remark quickly cleared an
entire section of the beach of sun worshippers.
Guy was presented with a t-shirt that said:
“Danger - Keep your Distance. Looking for
WWII Landmines. Keeping our beaches safe for
public use.”

Ken Lubinski was presented The Duct Tape
Award. During a competition hunt, his
headphones broke, severely affecting his
recovery speed. With duct tape now in his repair
kit, Ken is ready for anything!
Ken Lubinski also earned a horse on a stick
with an ornament around its neck. The ornament
featured a recording of the song from the 60s TV
sitcom, Mister Ed (the talking horse). Ken
pronounces the word horse - "haas," and we
have no idea what he is saying! We urge him to
sing this song to learn the correct pronunciation!

Frank Nash earned a t-shirt after almost
attacking an endangered species that bumped
into him while water hunting. Frank's t-shirt
sports a picture of a manatee with the statement
“Not all things that go bump in the water are
dangerous.”

Joe Cook has received praises from Frank Nash.
Frank is a successful hunter with great finds, but
only when Joe is with him! Joe's t-shirt stated:
“Good Luck Charm for Hire!
Call Joe Cook: 56 Iamlucky
For Testimonials call Frank Nash: 56IneedJoe”

WINNER OF THE BROKEN SCOOP
AWARD
By popular vote, Guy Bachman received the honor
of winning the 2nd annual Broken Scoop Award for his
dubious, but great, statement that he was looking for
WWII landmines while he was metal detecting.
Guy will have to display this award in a prominent
place in his home until the next Holiday Party in 2010.
Hopefully, he will be able to pass along this award at
that time to another member. The scoop was donated
by Kevin Reilly of Reilly's Treasured Gold, Inc. in
2008.

2009 Dessert Contest! Members enjoyed sampling
decadent desserts, making it nearly impossible to vote
for just one! The competition was steep with entries
that were all incredibly delicious and impressive! You
all out did yourselves this time and set the bar even
higher for next year!

The Dessert Committee (Mindy Spiroch and Jan
Smirnow) wish to thank those who participated in the

the Golden Whisk Award.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE FOR 2009
The following members had perfect attendance:
Mindy Spiroch, Gary McNew, Heather McNew,
Nikolay Malchev, Jason Petenbrink and Cheryl
Petenbrink. This feat made them eligible for a drawing
for a free entry into the 2010 American Coin Hunt and
Picnic. The lucky winner was Nikolay Malchev.

WINNER OF
LOST TREASURE SUBSCRIPTION
Lost Treasure Magazine graciously donated a one-year
subscription to be used as a door prize at our Holiday
Party. The lucky recipient was Nikolay Malchev. With
two active hunters in Malchev family, whoever gets to the
mail box first will lay claims to reading rights of the
magazine.

Perfect Attendance Winner - Nikolay Malchev

CHARITABLE DONATIONS

For the 14th consecutive year, GCTC members
demonstrated their commitment to the less fortunate in our
community. During our Holiday Party, members donated
a total of $210 to benefit Home Safe, a haven for abused,
abandoned, and neglected children. A big thank you goes
out to everyone who donated to this important cause especially in this difficult economy!
Throughout the year members also collected and
donated cell phones and ink cartridges to raise money for
the club, as well as hundreds of prescription eyeglasses
and sunglasses for the Lion’s Club of South Florida. These
spectacles will be distributed locally and internationally
for people who cannot afford prescriptive lenses. More
details about how YOUR donations help others will be
provided in future newsletters.

Thank you to everyone who participated!

and follow the upload instructions.
Hope to see your videos on Lost Treasure Tube soon.
