Vice President Stacey deLucia opened the May 13th
meeting at 7:30 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and a
warm welcome to 42 members and guests, including past
president Ernie Bouyoucas. We hope to see Ernie more
often now that he’s feeling better!
In order to allow enough time for our presentation,
Stacey ran a quick meeting, then everyone sat back to
enjoy National Geographic’s video “Lost Gold of the Dark
Ages,” about the discovery of the largest Anglo-Saxon
hoard ever unearthed. Special thanks go to Steve Hoskins,
who had the forethought to copy the movie while it was
on television, to Gary McNew for bringing and running
the A/V equipment, and to Nikolay Malchev for fastforwarding the movie through the commercials.
Secretary Jan Smirnow mentioned BJ’s “Operation
Gratitude” for Military Appreciation Month and reminded
everyone about donating eyeglasses, ink cartridges and
pull tabs to benefit various charities. (See below.)
Stacey thanked Bob and Jan Smirnow for providing
refreshments and thanked Cheryl Petenbrink for trying
to stump us with the Mystery Item – a simple octagonal
nut. Stacey had SEVEN identical nuts in her Tall Tales
Display, proving that it pays to bring in ALL your finds

Congrats to Kazhie Zabriskie who won the 50/50
drawing at the May meeting, earning her an easy $44.50!

You know the feeling - your detector makes a “perfect
low gold sound.” You’re excited as you dig, knowing that
this is going to be “THE” find. Then you see it in your
scoop. Nope! It’s just another pull tab! Well, don’t throw
it out in disgust. SAVE it. In fact, save them ALL and
bring them to Jan Smirnow, who is collecting them for
the Ronald McDonald House Charities. Do you think we
can collect as many pull tabs as shown in this photo that
Betty Laur took while she was in Virginia Beach???

The toxic sludge that is killing marine life, destroying
marshes and nesting sites, and ruining countless lives in
the Gulf hasn’t made its way to our coast yet, but when it
does, let’s be ready! Stacey deLucia wants to coordinate a
GCTC Community Service Project to clean litter from
local beaches BEFORE BP’s oil comes ashore. Let’s save
our State – our pristine beaches AND our hobby – before
it’s too late! (More details to come.)

On June 9th & 10th, 2010 the Lion’s Camp for
Handicapped Children in Texas will put those foreign
coins that you donated to good use. Then the coins and the
children will be gone. Please help Linda Bennett collect
foreign coins for next year’s children’s hunt.
