that is sure to inspire dreams of discovering untold riches.
If you missed “Lost Gold of the Dark Ages” on TV
recently, this is your chance to enjoy a movie that will
make you drool. The video shares the story about a man in
Europe who acquired a used metal detector and set out as
a beginning hobbyist. The fledgling detectorist had a
friend who owned a farm, so he asked for permission to
hunt the grounds. His friend said “sure,” but wasn’t very
encouraging, since the land had been hunted many times
by other hunters with no success. The hobbyist was
undeterred, and after the two verbally agreed to share
finds 50/50, the man began his hunt. Can you guess the
rest? This lucky son-of-a-gun unearthed the oldest and
most valuable Anglo-Saxon hoard ever discovered – gold
treasures worth several MILLION dollars and of
tremendous historical significance!

The GCTC recognizes members who provide selfless
service to our community. The first time a member returns
an item, that individual receives a metal detecting pin
(handcrafted by Steve Hoskins) to wear on his or her hat,
in addition to a Certificate of Appreciation. Future returns
are recognized by additional certificates. Kudos to all club
members who go out of their way to return items to their

Jim Returned a Driver’s License to a Grateful Dad
Jim Sharp returned a Driver's License that he found at
Delray Beach to the father of a son who had just moved
down here and who had stood in line at the DMV for three
hours to get it! Jim, always an Ambassador, gave the
father one of our club’s cards. The grateful dad thanked
Jim and offered a reward, but Jim respectfully refused.

hunts with the Central Florida Club and the Great
Southern Beach Shootout. We were sad to hear that our
friend, Ray, is fighting cancer. After an aggressive round

APRIL MEETING
President Mindy Spiroch welcomed members and
guests to the April 8th meeting, including John and Elise
Doyno of Wellington, who joined during the meeting.
Welcome to the entire Doyno family!
Jim Sharp, with an assist by Nick Mosca, presented a
great program: “How to sell your gold and not get ripped
off.” Club members learned many important pointers,
such as, sometimes it’s better to sell your gold jewelry as
just that – gold jewelry – NOT as scrap. Depending on the
item, you could get much more money for it that way. If
you’re not sure what your piece is worth, have it
appraised! When selling scrap gold, be sure to separate it
by category (e.g. 10kt, 14kt, 18kt, etc.). Before you head
out to sell your gold, it’s vital that you understand the
difference between DWT and TROY ounces, weigh it, and
know the price of gold for the day you are selling so you
don’t get ripped off. Expect the buyer to take 10 to 20
percent of the value when you sell, as they are in business
to make a profit. Members were given ideas of where they
could sell their scrap gold. Some favorite buyers
mentioned by club members who sell their finds include
fellow member Nick Mosca, Rechant’s Precious Metals at
the corner of Forest Hill and Congress, and Midwest
Refineries. Handouts were passed around that listed these
and other options for those who wish to sell. Additional
information listed on the sheets included a variety of
useful websites and various jewelry markings. If you
missed your copies, ask Jim or Nick at the next meeting.
Stacey deLucia encouraged members to send her
pictures and info about any returns they’ve made, relevant
websites they enjoy, or treasure hunting articles that
members may find of interest. As space allows, your ideas
may be published in a future edition of the Tinfoil Times.
Stacey also encouraged everyone to continue to bring in
prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses, which the club
donates to the Lion’s Club. Jan Smirnow mentioned that
she is still collecting cell phones and ink cartridges.
Mindy thanked Marilyn and Irving Smith for
providing refreshments and Stacey deLucia for bringing
the Mystery Item. Stacey stumped everyone for the second
month in a row, this time with a small toy skate.

CAMP OKLAWAHA BOY SCOUT CAMP HUNT
Seven club members and four invited guests from the
TCAS club (Mitch King, Skip Wagner, Richard and
Toni Hart) spent Sunday, April 11, metal detecting and
collecting trash as a service project for the Gulf Stream
Boy Scout Council. One brave soul from GCTC, Gary
McNew, hunted the swimming hole, unfortunately
without much success. Members searched for a recently
lost watch and camera, also without success.
Old coins were scarce, but a few were coaxed out of
the ground. Three people found Wheaties: Karen Larson
(1954); Irving Smith (1955); and Eddie D’Amato
(1944). Mitch King of TCAS led the pack in clad coins
found, with Irving Smith following close behind. No
jewelry was found, but Boy Scout items were found by
Irving Smith (4); Mitch King (3); Linda Bennett (2);
Karen Larson (1); and Toni Hart (1). Three of the Boy
Scout items that Irving Smith found were brand new, so
he gave them to the Camp Ranger for future use. Also
returned to the Ranger for future use were tent stakes that
were still in good condition. (Boy Scouts aren’t the only
ones who do good deeds!)
With the Gulf Stream Boy Scout Council in financial
straits and laying off employees in the past few weeks, the
GCTC offered to pay a day fee that is normally waived for
our service project.

FOREIGN COINS
Our club, along with the South Florida Treasure Club,
continues to collect foreign coins to donate towards a
summer camp for handicapped children. This is a year round project that brings joy to children as they learn
how to detect, despite their challenges. If you have coins
to donate, please see Linda Bennett, who will make
sure your donation goes to the right place. YOU can be
a hero to a child in need! Thanks to Jim Smith for his
donation of foreign coins.

E-MAIL UPDATE FROM KEITH WILLS
“For some 13 to 14 years now we have annually
helped many handicapped children learn the pastime of
metal detecting for treasure. Even with their problems, we
can show them how they can still have an outdoor hobby
they can do and enjoy. This year's dates are: June 9th &
10th, 2010, Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 8:00
AM. On the 8th a number of us will arrive to install new
batteries and set up tables, etc. to get ready for the 200
kids we'll work with for the next two days.
Before I go any further, let me say this: ‘Everyone is
Invited to Come and Help Us.’ If you can only help one
day, that is great, too. The Lion’s Camp for Handicapped
Children in Kerrville, TX really enjoys us donating our
time and knowledge to these kids and one look at the faces
of these kids and you know they are extremely happy to
see us as well. Not only will the kids learn how to enjoy
metal detecting for treasures, but they will discover that
there is an outdoor hobby they can enjoy even if they are
in a wheelchair, deaf or blind. These children are our
future and their learning the hobby could someday change
it for us all.
Lastly, we need helpers/workers and we 'need Foreign
Coins’ to hide for the kids. This has become an activity for
all campers who visit the camp each year, thus the very
reason why we also teach all the counselors as we are
teaching the kids, so they can continue the activity with
the foreign coins we leave with them and the dozen
detectors that were donated to the camp. Each child will
go home with a handful of foreign coins they found with
the use of a metal detector. Please help this activity for
these kids stay alive by donating your foreign coins, or
you can buy them by the pound at coins shops fairly
cheap.

GARY McNEW'S TIP OF THE MONTH
“Watch for the Indicators”
Every time we go to the beach, we can’t help but
wonder how many people have been there, where they
were sitting, and what goodies they dropped for us to
find. There are a few things I look for when I go to the
beach. First thing is those dreaded pull tabs and bottle
caps. Yes, they’re a nuisance, but they can be a great
indicator, as well. If you’re finding them all over the
place, that usually indicates that a lot of people were at
the beach recently. Another indicator I look for is the
amount of trash - not just on the surface, but more so
what is buried. If I dig up a pile of trash, I will work a
spiral pattern around it for about 20 feet. A pile of trash
like that usually indicates that a “group” of people was
in that area. Another indicator of where people were
sitting is bird tracks. Yes, I said bird tracks! Seagulls
are accustomed to being fed by beachgoers, and
sometimes when people leave, they dump food scraps.
Birds collect in that area, leaving tracks everywhere as
they wrestle over every morsel of food.
It’s unfortunate that we live in such a throw away
society. But we do, so make use of it. If you’re not
finding pull tabs, bottle caps, and trash, then not many
people have been there. Pay attention to how many you
find in different areas, slow down and spend more time
around these indicators. So grab your machine, go out
to your favorite beach, and watch not only for the good
stuff, but also these indicators. Most of all - have fun!

and hope for the best.

I swapped the nickel for two dimes.

VOODOO PARK
For an interesting article, pick up the April 2010
edition of Western & Eastern Treasures Magazine. In
it, author Mark Schuessler discusses his memories of
a unique – and somewhat spooky – hunt he
experienced in Voodoo Park with the late Kevin
Reilly. It’s a nice tribute to Kevin, who was a GCTC
member and owner of Reilly’s Treasured Gold in
Pompano Beach.

Burial of cache and the clues are provided by Irving
Smith. If found by a club member, that person will receive a
$25 prize AND earn the right to bury the next cache! Good
luck everyone! Start digging! Please fill all holes!

In August, members will be encouraged to submit
creative entries made out of items found while
detecting. Silver prizes will be awarded in three
categories: Most Creative, Best Display and Most
Unusual. Participants are not limited to the number of
entries that they can submit and everyone is
encouraged to “think outside the box” and join in the
