NOVEMBER MEETING
With the price of gold and silver soaring lately, a lot of
folks are eager to get in on the action. Unfortunately,
many unscrupulous scammers want to separate
unsuspecting consumers from their money. Our November
11th meeting will feature a timely presentation by Rechant
Precious Metals: “Buyer (and Seller) Beware! How NOT
to Get Ripped Off When Buying or Selling Precious
Metals.” If you’re even thinking about investing in - or
liquidating - your gold or silver, come and learn how to
avoid being turned into a
turkey this Thanksgiving!
It’s time to start thinking about what dish you’ll bring
to share at the Annual Holiday Party on December 9th.
We’ll have a sign-up sheet at the November meeting.

NOVEMBER ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Members should have received a reminder email from
Linda Bennett that the Election of Officers will be held
during our November meeting. Volunteers with fresh
ideas are encouraged to run for one of these positions:
president, vice-president, or secretary. The treasurer’s
position is the only elected position that doesn’t need to be
filled. Contact Linda if you’re interested in running for the
board, or want to discuss other volunteer opportunities.

OCTOBER MEETING – HALLOWEEN BASH

If you missed our October meeting, you missed A LOT
of fun! As 30 attendees approached the club house, they
were greeted by a sinister creature rising up out of a
“grave yard,” cobwebs, and other spooky decorations.
Once inside, they were greeted by pirates, metal detecting
monsters, gangsters, ugly old maids, the Great Pumpkin,
and a whole cast of other ghouls and characters.
Our program for the evening, in keeping with the
Halloween theme, was “Tales from the Crypt.” With
lights turned low, members shared scary stories related to
their treasure hunting adventures. Ed D’Amato, dressed
as dashing pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, told of metal
detecting on Juno Beach late one evening under a full
moon when he and a friend saw a circle of women
chanting around a glowing object - a cauldron, perhaps?
Ed cracked: “Are you looking for a sacrifice?” The
women, who apparently took that as an open invitation,
proceeded menacingly toward Ed and his friend, who both
took off running! Other spooky tales were shared. Jim
Sharp found a Voodoo jar buried beneath an old tree, and
Linda Bennett told of a mischievous little girl ghost who
haunts the pediatric wing of the hospital where she works.
Congrats to Ed D’Amato (pirate) and Jan Smirnow
(pumpkin) who TIED for First Place in the Costume
Contest and to Tessa Durand (pirate) for Second Place.
As the party came to an end, president Mindy Spiroch
thanked Stacey deLucia, Jan Smirnow and Ed D’Amato
for bringing the refreshments. Mindy and Gary Spiroch
brought the mystery item this month – a radio antenna.

an item, that individual receives a metal detecting pin
(handcrafted by Steve Hoskins) to wear on his or her hat, in

Paul Hamlin – Returned an 18K diver’s watch that was
lost in the water. This was the second different dive watch
that this individual had lost. A tip from Paul – never wear a
watch in the water that has a Velcro band!
Jim Sharp – Returned a wedding band on August 22 to
Maralee Gardner who had lost her ring on the beach.
He also returned a wedding ring and engagement ring on
September 4 to Caryn Slaysky.

A popular speaker at various metal detecting clubs and
events has a new addition to the family. Tom and wife May
welcome their second child, Maylyn.
Tom has a vast wealth of knowledge in all areas of
metal detecting, especially when it comes to instruction on
how to use your machine. His latest DVD, “Metal
Detecting, Real World Techniques, Inland Coin and Relic
Hunting,” is available for purchase.

Our club, along with the South Florida Treasure Club,
continues to collect foreign coins to donate towards a
summer camp for handicapped children. This is a yearround project that brings joy to children as they learn how
to detect, despite their challenges. If you have coins to
donate, please see Linda Bennett, who will make sure your
donation goes to the right place. YOU can be a hero to a
child in need!

OCTOBER CLUB HUNT
Jim Sharp and Paul Hamlin, the designated hunt
masters for the October club hunt in Jupiter, arrived early
on Sunday, October 17. Not early enough to claim our
usual spot on the beach, but still early enough to snag the
second best spot. Jim had collected items during the past
year to plant and that was enough to keep the twelve
hunters busy for the hour long hunt. Allen Schwartz
hunted for the first time with a metal detector loaned by
Bob and Jan Smirnow.
Members were glad to see Betty Laur out and about.
She hasn’t healed enough from her surgeries to swing a
detector yet, but she was able to relax and visit with the
other 15 members who attended. Supportive hubby that he
is, Jerry opted to keep Betty company during the hunt,
rather than participate in the competition.
Prior to the hunt, six early birds met for breakfast at
Cracker Barrel.

COIN CACHE
After eight months of searching, the coin cache
remains undiscovered. It is officially the longest and
most frustrating hunt in club history! Time will tell –
has the cache been uncovered by a non-member, or
does it still lie where it was buried by Irving Smith?
Irving will be back down south in November and his
first order of business will be to check out the site.
Extra clues have been given out at past club
meetings. If any club member would like to attempt
to locate the coins, just call Linda for clues.

GARY McNEW'S TIP OF THE MONTH
“Summer Beach…Winter Beach”
What is the difference between a summer beach and
a winter beach? One of the biggest differences is the
shoreline. During the summer when the water is much
calmer, the tides deposit sand onto the shore and
extend the shoreline out further. But, during the winter
the water is more turbulent and strips a lot of this sand
away. It is now time to change our strategies when we
go to our favorite beach. With the winter season
approaching, you should always take a water machine
with you, if you have one. You never know what
condition the shoreline will be in when you get there.
There have been times I have been totally surprised by
what I saw at the beach. I had looked at the surf reports
and decided not to take a water machine with me
because the surf report was 3 ft. or less, meaning, not
very big waves, only to get there and see this massive
cut in the beach. So, during this time of year be
prepared to change strategies after you get there. You
never know what you will find; it could be a cut or a
deep scallop left as a result of a rip tide. So, grab you
land machine and your water machine when you go out
to your favorite beach this time of year, watch the
shoreline, but most of all - have fun. Thank You.
