Our August 12 meeting will feature a presentation by
Joe Kononchik of Reilly’s Treasured Gold. Joe has been
employed by Reilly’s for ten years and has a wealth of
knowledge concerning metal detecting machinery. He will
bring some of the high quality scoops that have made
RTG famous and explain their uses. Be ready with your
questions, as this will be a great opportunity to find out
what the hottest equipment is and why.
Our August meeting is also traditionally our “What to
Do with Your Finds Contest.” See next column for more
information about this not-to-be-missed annual event.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR FINDS CONTEST
It’s finally here! Every August, this popular contest
encourages our members to show off their creativity
using items they’ve found while metal detecting. Do you
have a unique way to display your finds? Have you
created “masterpieces” using items you’ve “recovered”
during your hunts? If so, we want to see them! In the past,
we’ve seen jewelry, mobiles, paintings, collages, lamps,
paperweights and other assorted oddities made from club
members’ finds. What can you dream up?
Members who wish to enter must bring a new item (or
items) that they created since the last contest. Previous
contest entries will not be eligible for prizes, but feel free
to show them off if you’d like. The three categories will
be Best Display, Best Wearable Item and Most
Creative. Silver prizes will be awarded.

Another Happy Return!

JUNE MEETING
President Mindy Spiroch welcomed 44 members and
guests to the June 10th meeting, where Margaret “Lady
Gold-Diver” Weller treated the audience to amazing but
true stories about her colorful life treasure hunting with
her husband and dive partner Robert (Bob/Frogfoot)
Weller. Together, over the course of more than three
decades, they recovered priceless gold and silver coins
and artifacts, as well as countless pieces of olive jars, bits
of china and even Emeralds. Margaret brought an
assortment of artifacts and explained what made them
desirable. Everyone’s jaws dropped when she held up an
11 foot long “money chain” made of 23 karat gold.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Having two treasure salvagers in our midst provided a
fascinating opportunity to learn about history and see
priceless treasures first hand.
Mindy thanked Amy and Steve Hamedl for providing
refreshments (it looked like Amy baked for two days!) and
thanked Gary McNew for stumping us with the Mystery
Item – a “finger board,” which no one had on the table.
Glen and Dixie Gamble won the Reilly’s Treasured Gold
$25 Gift Card. Then, in no time flat, we sold out all the
chances for a new $50 raffle of a Gas Card, which was
won by a very lucky Elayne Lynch.

JULY MEETING

Vice President Stacey deLucia opened the July 8th
meeting at with the Pledge of Allegiance and a warm
welcome to members and guests, including Drew and
Cindy Van Deventer, who later joined. Welcome!
The program for the evening was a casual round-table
“Members’ Tips and Tall Tales” discussion. Just about
everyone shared their favorite tips, many of which focused
on how to beat the heat when detecting during the dog
days of summer. Suggestions included using water
misters, hydration packs, gel-filled chilled or frozen
bandana collars, and water hunting. Everyone agreed that
sun protection was important due to skin cancer risks
(don’t forget sunscreen with a high SPF, hats, and cover
ups). Too many members have had skin cancer removals.
There were many other helpful tips. In a surprise move,
Stacey drew from a box full of the names of all who
participated. The winner, Gary McNew, was awarded a
Silver Half Dollar just for participating.
Bo Greenwood had an exceptionally lucky evening!
He won a door prize, was the Best Finds Silver runner up,
won a silver coin for participating in Ben Smith’s
Independent Hunt, a silver quarter for having a belt buckle
in his collection of finds, which was this month’s Mystery
Item, and last, but not least, Bo won $35 playing the 50/50
Raffle! Talk about a lucky guy!
Stacey thanked Linda Bennett for bringing the club
sponsored refreshments (Ice Cream Sundaes!) and for
trying to stump us with the Mystery Item. The meeting
adjourned at 9:29 p.m.

GARY McNEW'S TIP OF THE MONTH
What is your threshold tolerance?
Most modern day metal detectors have what is
called a threshold tone. Some machines give you the
option of turning it off and hunting in silent, others do
not. I have been hearing mixed comments on likes and
dislikes of a threshold, so I thought I would tell my
story. When I first bought my DFX 2 years ago, I
learned that it had a threshold. My original machine
that I had used for many years did not. I almost didn’t
buy it because I was use to not having one, but I
decided that I would get used to it eventually so I went
ahead and got it. After I used it for a while I began to
understand the purpose of the threshold tone. When
you pass over a metal object that is mostly iron, the
tone goes away. If I pass over a bottle cap, the tone
changes to a broken tone mixed with little chirps of
other tones indicating that there is some degree of a
non-ferrous metal mixed in with the target. So I began
to listen very close to the threshold tone with every
target and would actually play a game sometimes of
“Name the Bottle Cap,” and would try to identify what
type of cap it was by the tones it gave. I memorized
these tones and soon was able to tell the difference
between a bottle cap and something other than a bottle
cap, such as foreign coins. There are a lot of coins from
Canada and Europe that have a high amount of iron in
them and sound very much like bottle caps, but if you
listen close you can hear the difference between them,
thanks to the threshold.
So do I regret getting a machine that has a
threshold? Absolutely not. I wouldn’t know how to
hunt without one now. I also have an Excal 1000 that I
use on the surf and in the water, it too has a threshold,
and the same thing applies with it too. So grab your
machine, get out to your favorite beach, and turn that
threshold up to where you can hear it without having to
concentrate to hear it. Have fun and listen to how many
different sound patterns you can identify by the tones
you hear. But most of all have fun.

Just use these clues
That you’ve been given.
Item buried is a small vitamin container 2 3/4" long and
1 1/2 " in diameter. It is placed in a Ziploc® bag.

P.S. Don’t forget to take plenty of water with you, it
is HOT out here. I take 1 liter water bottles and freeze
them. These will give you cold water for about three
hours. Happy Hunting!
