July 26th, 2016
Hamilton Elementary School
1650 West Cornelia Avenue
Chicago, Il. 60657

Mr. James Gray and Ms. Yolanda Luna-Mroz,
I have been made aware of a potential job opening for an art teacher at Hamilton Elementary School and I'm
writing to you to apply for this position because I believe that I would be a strong addition to your fine arts
program.
I am a certified art teacher with two and a half years of experience instructing students from Pre-kindergarten
through Sixth Grade with many different cultural backgrounds. I was delighted to see many goals that I believe
in and utilize in my curriculum stated in Hamilton’s mission statement. As an art educator I fully believe that
inquiry-based learning is essential, and visual arts provide students the opportunity for exploring new media
using creative problem solving. Active collaboration plays an integral role in many of my lessons, including
storybook illustrations, creating animal habitat drawings, and mathematical tessellations based on the artwork
of M.C. Escher.
It is one of my key goals to integrate technology into visual arts education. Through a Donor's Choose grant, I
was able to provide over one thousand students access to an Interactive Whiteboard and more hands on
learning. I hope to expand upon my use of technology to better communicate with students' families, such as
through ArtSonia, Twitter, and a classroom blog. My course work at Illinois State University included an
emphasis in pottery and sculptural ceramics, which I want to have play a large role in my art curriculum. For
example, I would like to have the students create a ceramic bowl for the Empty Bowl Project that will be
auctioned off with the proceeds going to help feed the community at a local homeless shelter. Along with
visual arts, I have passion and experience in theater production, including acting, directing, choreography, set
design, and stage management. I would love to contribute these skills and knowledge Hamilton's annual spring
play.
I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you and discuss how my skills and experience can met the
needs of your students. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,

Morgan Swenson
