The!New!Mexico!Brain!Education!Project!will!provide!tutors!with!various!hands'on,!
physical,!emotional,!and!cognitive!exercises,!activities,!and!principles!to!use!in!the!
classroom!that!are!designed!to!improve!focus,!creativity,!memory,!confidence,!stress!
management,!and!physical!health.!!Training!outcomes!include!significant!positive!
changes!in!learning!efficiency,!motivation,!self'esteem,!peer!relationship,!anxiety,!self'
regulation,!stress!management,!and!levels!of!positive!behavior!in!the!learning!
environment!and!community.!

This!workshop!can!help!both!Basic!Literacy!and!English!as!a!Second!Language!tutors!set!
goals!with!their!students.!!Using!the!SMART!acronym,!tutors!can!help!students!focus!
their!goals!on!being!specific,!measurable,!achievable,!relevant,!and!time'!
bound.!!Participants!will!learn!how!to!take!long'term!or!general!goals!and!break!them!
down!into!smaller,!more!achievable,!short'term!goals.!!And!finally,!participants!will!
explore!how!goals!fit!into!the!overall!scheme!of!goals,!assessment,!and!lesson!planning!
to!find!the!relationship!between!those!three!major!components!of!a!student’s!journey.!

This!workshop!will!focus!on!the!different!areas!in!the!tutor/student!relationship!for!
setting!boundaries!in!general!and!will!help!tutors!establish!healthy!and!flexible,!yet!
rigid!boundaries.!It!will!help!tutors!understand!why!this!is!important!to!the!learning!
relationship.!Participants!will!engage!in!an!activity!that!emphasizes!the!importance!of!
setting!and!enforcing!boundaries!to!underscore!this!message.!

READ!—!Reading!Evaluation!Adult!Diagnosis!(Montano!B)!

This!workshop!for!tutors!and!staff!shows!one!way!to!assess!a!student's!reading!
ability.!!The!READ!uses!sight!words,!word!analysis,!and!text!passages!to!help!people!
understand!areas!where!a!person!might!need!help.!!The!workshop!will!show!
participants!how!to!find!the!READ!online,!how!to!administer!it,!and!how!to!understand!
the!results.!!Over!time,!different!parts!of!the!READ!can!be!used!to!show!progress.!

Jodi!Thomas!has!millions!of!books!in!print!and!is!both!a!New,
York,Times!and!USA,Today!bestselling!author!of!45!plus!novels!
and!13!short!story!collections.!Her!stories!travel!through!the!
past!and!present!days!of!Texas!and!draw!readers!from!around!
the!world.!
!
In!July!2006,!Jodi!was!the!11th!writer!to!be!inducted!into!the!
Romance!Writers!of!America!Hall!of!Fame.!With!five!RITA’s!to!
her!credit,!along!with!National!Readers’!Choice!Awards!and!
Booksellers’!Best!Awards,!Jodi!has!proven!her!skill!as!a!master!
storyteller.!
!
Honored!in!2002!as!a!Distinguished!Alumni!by!Texas!Tech!University!in!Lubbock,!Texas,!
Jodi!enjoys!interacting!with!students!at!West!Texas!A&M!University!in!Canyon,!Texas,!
where!she!currently!serves!as!Writer!in!Residence.!

Mary!Ellen!Gonzales!traces!her!ancestry!in!New!Mexico!to!
before!the!Pueblo!Revolt!of!1680.!!She!was!raised!on!a!ranch!
near!Chama,!New!Mexico!and!is!half!Hispanic!and!half!Anglo,!
so!she!views!her!job!as!being!a!“culture!bridger.”!!Mary!Ellen!
tells!stories!from!all!cultures,!but!her!specialty!is!Hispanic!
stories!from!Northern!New!Mexico.!!She!explores!cultural!
values!as!revealed!by!the!stories!people!tell!and!brings!
sparkle,!energy,!and!charm!to!all.!
!
Mary!Ellen!has!served!her!community!on!numerous!boards,!including!8!years!on!
the!Santa!Fe!Board!of!Education,!several!years!on!the!Board!of!Big!Brothers/Big!Sisters,!
on!the!Board!of!the!Santa!Fe!Branch!of!the!YMCA!of!Central!New!Mexico,!and!on!the!
Santa!Fe!Regional!Juvenile!Justice!Board.!!She!is!a!Restorative!Justice!Service!Provider,!
having!served!the!youth!of!our!community!in!that!function!for!nearly!a!decade.!!She!is!
heavily!involved!in!Social!Justice!Work!with!her!church!where!she!also!serves!on!the!
Board!of!Trustees.!!!

Diane!Ross!is!the!Training!Coordinator!for!the!New!Mexico!Coalition!
for!Literacy!(NMCL).!!She!began!tutoring!Basic!Literacy!(BL)!in!1989.!!
In!2012,!she!became!certified!as!a!teacher!of!English!to!Speakers!of!
Other!Languages!(TESOL)!and!taught!English!in!Beijing,!China.!!Diane!
has!written!several!training!manuals!for!NMCL!tutor!trainers,!
including!the!NMCL’s!English!as!a!Second!Language!(ESL)!manual!
and!a!Basic!Literacy!(BL)!manual.!!She!is!currently!a!BL!tutor!trainer!for!the!NMCL.!
!
Laura!Combs!is!the!program!director!at!Family!Promise!of!
Albuquerque,!a!non'profit!organization!that!partners!with!the!
interfaith!community.!!Family!Promise!uses!the!volunteers!and!talents!
of!local!churches!to!improve!the!lives!of!homeless!families.!!She!was!
the!principal!person!to!set!up!and!manage!a!Literacy!and!Job!Center!at!
Family!Promise!with!the!financial!assistance!of!the!New!Mexico!
Coalition!for!Literacy.!!She!has!worked!at!Family!Promise!for!four!
years.!!She!is!a!certified!Basic!Literacy!tutor!and!administers!the!literacy!assessments!
for!Family!Promise.!!Laura!provides!case!management!for!all!families!and!individuals!
using!the!Literacy!and!Job!Center.!!She!has!two!masters’!degrees!in!Education!and!
Social!Work.!

Donna!Audette!is!the!principal!consultant!and!owner!of!Coaching!
With!Care,!LLC,!providing!counsel!to!nonprofit!staff!and!boards!on!
the!principles!of!nonprofit!management,!roles!and!responsibilities,!
bylaws,!and!strategic!plans.!!She!has!served!on!many!nonprofit!
boards!and!held!executive!management!positions!in!nonprofits!for!
30!years.!!The!types!of!services!Donna!has!directed!include!
community!mental!health,!chemical!dependency,!program!
evaluation!and!research,!adult!literacy,!community!planning,!
domestic!violence,!early!childhood!education,!diversity,!and!fair!housing.!!Donna!has!
taught!nonprofit!management!for!the!Department!of!Community!and!Urban!Affairs!at!
Wright!State!University!in!Ohio!and!holds!a!degree!in!Public!Administration!from!
Michigan!State!University.!
