THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE GOLD COAST TREASURE CLUB, INC.
VOLUME 32 NUMBER 7

JULY 2007

THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE 7:30 P.M. JULY12
AT THE WEST PALM BEACH GARDEN CLUB IN DREHER PARK
IN WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA
OUR CODE OF ETHICS: HAVE PERMISSION AND DO NO HARM
TEST YOUR SKILLS AT THE JULY MEETING
Don’t miss Thursday’s meeting! You will want to bring
your detector (or detectors) to determine which ones have
the best sensitivity, accuracy and pinpointing ease. There
will be stations set up behind the Garden Club where you
can test your knowledge and your skill. Ken Lubinski
will be in charge of the station that will see how well you
can target ID various metal objects. Richard Zabriskie
will test your skills at accurately pin pointing a target.
Linda Bennett will supervise a station that will test your
machine’s target discrimination abilities. These stations
are designed to hone your skills, so come prepared WITH
your detector!
In case of rain, we will continue our evening of
learning, networking, etc. inside the Garden Club.
Thank you in advance goes out to Linda and Trent
Bowen for volunteering to bring refreshments for our
meeting. Bob Smirnow also deserves a thank you for
volunteering to bring the Mystery Item.

JOIN US FOR SOME PRE-MEETING FUN!
Each month, a group of us gather for dinner at 5:30
p.m. before the meeting. Everyone is welcome! Join us in
the back room of PA BBQ. Dinner is Dutch Treat,
meaning, we each pay our own way. (For directions,
please check a prior newsletter.)
Park Ave. BBQ & Grille
2401 North Dixie Hwy (US 1)
Lake Worth, Florida
Please remember to return any library books or
videos that you checked out last month.

CLUB HUNT
There will NOT be a club hunt in July because it is
TOO DARN HOT. But there will be a scavenger hunt
instead. See the insert for a copy of the items and the
rules. Silver prizes will be awarded at the August meeting.
Ken Lubinski and Betty and Jerry Laur will host a
club hunt on August 12 at Carlin Park. The cost will be
$2/hunter. More details will be in the August newsletter.
Ben Smith and Karen Larson will be hosting the club
hunt in September. The date and details will be announced
in the September newsletter.
Hunt Master Linda is always looking for new ideas
for hunts. If any member would like to host a hunt, give
her a call. She will give you the details.

HUNT MASTER’S EDITORIAL
Many club members have their own special or “secret”
places to metal detect that they like to keep to themselves.
Their time invested in research and actual hunting has
resulted in certain areas that produce consistent finds.
Understandably, they don’t want to tell someone, only to
find that person and others frequenting “their spot.” Some
may not agree, but we ask that you respect the feelings of
those who DO believe in keeping their spots private.
Unwritten treasure hunting etiquette stipulates that you
should not ask the exact area found (i.e. Delray Beach).
Instead, ask was the item found in the water, on the beach
or on land. Do not be disappointed if the individual does
not want to give you a specific area. They are not being
unfriendly. These same members are more than willing to
share general tips on hunting or using a particular metal
detector.

JUNE CLUB HUNT

WHO IS THIS DEBONAIR YOUNG MAN?

Sharing good times and good food with fellow club
members always make a successful club hunt even if the
finds are lacking. Seven members shared a hot but fun
day together in Okeechobee. Steve and Gail Hoskins,
Linda Bennett, Karen Larson, Ernie Bouyoucas and
Ben Smith carpooled/caravanned together after breakfast
at Cracker Barrel’s. Wayne Daniels met us at Okee-tantie
Recreation Area after working all night as a paramedic.
The popular recreation/camping area didn’t produce as
much money or jewelry as it has in the past. Anyone
hunting the river banks made sure they didn’t turn their
back to alligators. The last count of large alligators
cruising the river was seven. Lunch was at the Lightsey
Restaurant where Steve’s dad had donated a deer head that
was displayed along with various other animals and fish.
The group moved to a local playground and picnic area
to hunt before hitting the final spot of one of the piers on
Lake Okeechobee. With the lake at a record low, we were
able to hunt under the pier. Coins were frequent along
with keys and other miscellaneous items.

Come to the July meeting and receive a copy of an
article published in 1987 to find out.

Thank you to Jim Sharp for providing the magazine
article.

FOREIGN COINS
Our club, along with the South Florida Treasure
Hunter’s club, collects foreign coins throughout the year
to donate towards a summer camp hunt for handicapped
children in Texas.
Keith Wills reports that for the 12th year this event
was held in June at the Texas Lions Camp for
Handicapped Children in Kerrville, Texas. More than 100
kids and 40 counselors were taught how to find treasures
with a metal detector. Thanks to all who made it possible!

MEMBER UPDATES

HAVE DETECTOR, WILL TRAVEL

Please remember those members who are not able to
metal detect – Don Caplinger, Irving Smith, James
Wilhelm and Dorothy Mills. Calls are always welcome!
Our friend, James Wilhelm, is in Houston, Texas for
continued medical treatment. Keep James in your prayers
during this time and send him a note, as he would love to
hear from you all. (James sends his thanks and misses us!)

Ernie Bouyoucas: I started this trip in Doylestown, PA
(30 miles N of Philadelphia). I only got to hunt my niece's
back yard due to time constraints. I found about 30 cents
in change, including a wheat penny. I also found an old
.50 caliber bullet of unknown origin.
While in Ashburn, VA (a suburb of Washington, DC) I
was shown to the Battle of Dranesville site by Mr. Ron
Zartman, a member of the Northern Virginia Relic
Hunter's Association. I had e-mailed the club prior to my
departure and he was one of a few who responded and
volunteered to take me TH’ing on a Civil War site. Four
hours on the site netted me many modern era cartridge
cases, bullets & shotgun shell casings. I also found a .69
caliber musket ball, a .54 caliber bullet and another
smaller bullet all from the Civil War battle. Gnats, ticks
and barbed wire were also abundant.
This trip was a marked improvement over my January
trip to the same areas when the temperature was 25
degrees and the ground was like concrete. It's tough
enough to dig anyway with its high clay content.

TALL TALES TABLES TOTALS FOR 2007
AS OF JUNE 2007
DOLLAR AMOUNT: $2790.55
PLATINUM: 2
GOLD: 68
SILVER: 130

RICHARD’S TIP
“Look on top of the white boxes on South Beach – I
found a $1.40 in change last time I was there.” Also,
check the beach prints – look for the “butt print” almost
always finds change there.

******************************************
MEMBER TIPS
Paul Hamlin – Anyone using the electrolysis system I
demonstrated last month, please remember to use
DISTILLED WATER.

LOCKS FOR LOVE
Al Bergrud recently cut his 14 inch pony tail to
donate to Locks of Love. His wife, Mitzi, will miss the
beautiful curly pony tail but she is proud of his dedication
to grow it for children who have developed long-term
medical hair loss. Way to go, Al!

Mission Statement: Locks of Love is a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially
disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from longterm medical hair loss from any diagnosis. The prostheses
we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their
confidence, enabling them to face the world and their
peers.
For more information on Locks of Love:

www.locksoflove.org

Jason Petenbrink - Got up early to hunt a beach “on
the Atlantic Ocean” because the water was dead flat. After
three hours of hunting, he noticed lifeguards waving
everyone from the water. As he made his way to the
beach, a 7 ft shark was cruising between Jason and the
beach. This was a first for Jason, a close up look at a
shark. After the all clear was given, Jason calmly went
back to hunting in the water. Unfortunately no gold was
found, just sharks. Jason shared this information with
Stacey the next day after she had already put in her first
full day of water hunting. Jason didn’t want her to worry
about becoming shark food.
Gary del Rosal – He is a former member that moved
to Alabama. He and his family have been traveling in
Spain, Portugal and Italy for seven weeks. He has kept
me (Linda) updated through emails and pictures of his
trip. Below are photos of a coin found in Sagres, Portugal
while he checking out an old fortress/pousada.

JUNE PROGRAM
Vice President Stacey deLucia officiated the June
meeting because President Ernie Bouyoucas was out of
town (see “Have Detector, Will Travel”). Five guests and
a new member, Joannie Bracco, were welcomed. Stacey
was successful in selling the Nordic Track that was
donated by Paul Hamlin. $50 was added to the treasury.
Thanks, Paul and Stacey!
Mike McMorrow of the Palm Beach Beach Patrol
gave a talk on beach hazards. He brought informational
pamphlets on Sea Lice and rip currents. Rip currents were
discussed in depth with up-to-date details given about the
problems encountered during this past Memorial Day. He
said the things to remember if you are caught in a rip
current is to not panic, signal with your arm for help and
flow with the current until you do not feel any pull, then
swim back to shore.
For painful Man O’ War stings – use Benadryl and
meat tenderizer. Also, Benadryl will help with Sea Lice.
When you are in the water with Sea Lice present, “wear as
little clothing as possible; the parasite likes tight fitting
places, and one of the life guards I know uses baby oil to
help defray the parasites.”
Mike fielded many questions from the members
regarding sharks, saying “It is more dangerous crossing
the streets.” His presentation related several stories of his
experience as a professional life guard – it was a very
informative program.
Guests Jason Innes and Jon Consiglio of the
Lantana’s Batteries Plus Store donated a light that
attaches to hat visors and 24 double AA batteries for the
club’s raffle. They spoke to the members about batteries
and a free service they do for rechargeable batteries.
Their equipment can recondition rechargeable batteries in
a three-cycle analysis that takes 24 hours. The process
erases the memory, will take the discharge down far
enough to allow the battery to be recharged to its fullest
potential, and will indicate the retention value of the
battery (i.e. 75% charging retention etc). They further
advised that when using household wireless phones, take
them off the cradle during the daytime, then at night
replace them on the cradle. This will allow the phone to
hold a charge longer. Batteries Plus promised to donate
items on a regular basis, so please be sure to patronize our
sponsor. Batteries Plus is located at 6250 Lantana Road,
Suite 1 (behind the Outback Steak House).
Thanks to Nikolay Malchev for volunteering to
provide the refreshments and to Stacey deLucia for the
Mystery Item. Also thanks to Donna Russo for providing
a contact for our speaker for the August meeting.
If you find a cell phone that is in fair to good condition
but has a dead battery – call Jim Sharp at 561-966-6986.
Jim has all kinds of chargers and will do his best to help
you return the phone.

low and behold, inside was a driver’s license and a $10
Bill!”

STILL WANTED: EYEGLASSES, CELL
PHONES AND INK CARTRIDGES
Club members are encouraged to bring in
prescription glasses and sunglasses, which will be
donated to underprivileged people suffering from vision
problems. Stacey collects these during our monthly
meetings so the club can donate them to the South Florida
Lion’s Club. Please bring any unwanted eyeglasses to the
next meeting and deposit them into the collection box at
the back of the room. Thank you!
Jan Smirnow collects cell phones and ink cartridges.
She was able to sell the ink cartridges for $62. NOTE: All
ink cartridges need to be kept enclosed in a plastic baggie
so the cartridges do not dry out. Dried out cartridges are
NOT reusable. She is still researching where to donate the
cell phones.
