PA Prompt Card
Customers do appreciate getting information when their
train is delayed. This shows them that you are in control
and demonstrates professionalism. For example:
‘Ladies

and gentlemen- this train is being held at a signal.
We should be on the move shortly.’

If you are not on the move within a minute or two this
can be followed with:
Ladies and gentlemen – sorry for the continuing delay. As
soon as I have any further information, I will let you know.’
In the case of lengthy delays you should find out the
reason and let customers know.
Trains are sometimes delayed at stations for our
reasons that seem obvious to us but may not be to our
customers. For example:
‘Ladies and gentlemen – this train will stand in this platform

for a short time while I hand over to one of my colleagues.’
‘Ladies and gentlemen – this train is scheduled to stand at
this station for a short time.’
Between stations an initial PA should always be made
before 30 seconds have elapsed. At stations the initial
PA should always be made within 90 seconds.
Generic PA Messages
Ladies and Gentlemen, sorry for the delay. We are
currently:
Waiting for the signal to clear
Waiting for the platform ahead to be free
Waiting for the scheduled departure time for this train

Preventing unnecessary activations and minimising delay (key factors)
The following factors can increase risk of unnecessary activations;
BUSY STATIONS (especially where customers are boarding with bags and
cases e.g. Kings X, Victoria & Euston).
PLATFORM SIDE CHANGE This can cause delay, if a train departs a
station with an internally trapped item that cannot be naturally released at
the next station(s) e.g. Kings X Plt 1 W.B, Mansion House Plt 1 W.B.
A CHANGE IN WEATHER/CLIMATE Coats, Jackets & belts can become
caught in the door edges and cause unnecessary internal activations.

!

Note; S/E activations can be prevented by making effective use of
P.A equipment, when one or more of the above factors are present!
Sensitive Edge equipment (general)
Reset/overide button; This button will also illuminate to indicate a
S/E activation.

Cut-out switch; Used when the S/E system becomes defective.

TCMS station screen; Features a re-open facility
(orange soft key) and S/E door indication (orange
door indicator).
Flashing Outside Door Indicator Light; Identifies the car(s) with
S/E activation(s).
Examples of when you will need to investigate/release trapped items
• a PEA has been operated at the same time as a S/E activation
• if a person or item is observed to be trapped (externally) on the
platform side on departure
• an item needs to be released on the non platform side to prevent
reoccurring activations. This should be done when train is fully berthed
at a station
In these situations
• inform the controller
• fully secure the train make a PA announcement and investigate.
