Project Overview
This is a multi-million pound project to extend
and improve facilities at Woodford Leisure
Centre, one of the city council’s largest leisure
centres, located on Holderness Road.
Hobson & Porter, as the main building
contractor, is creating a new front elevation
to the building and an extension to house
a new reception area, a 25-metre, six-lane
swimming pool and a 10-metre beginners’ pool.
The project also includes new sauna and
steam facilities, improved changing rooms,
a new café and an improved, landscaped
car-park. In the early part of 2017, the
scope of works was extended to include
replacing the roof of the existing building.
The total duration of the project is approximately
18 months, from Hobson & Porter’s early
engagement with Hull City Council in October
2016 to the handover, scheduled for April 2018.
The centre will be closed during this time due to
the extensive and disruptive nature of the works.

Project Manager’s Blog - Kevin Harrison
We are making good progress at Woodford
Leisure Centre, both internally and externally.
Internally, the new café/changing area floor
screeds have been finished allowing the walls to
be prepared for tiling. The two new pools are also
being prepared for tiling to start during October,
this being a major milestone in the project.
New glazing to the existing pool roof will
be complete shortly, allowing much of the external
scaffolding to be removed.

Roofing
• The ‘bird cage’ scaffolding, erected in the
main pool hall, is complete – a camera was
installed to capture time lapse footage of
this, which can be viewed on our website and
twitter feed: #hpwoodford. This has enabled
the installation of new glazing to begin.
• The roof hall lighting has now been installed
• Timber roof links between the new
extension and the existing leisure centre
building have been completed, and are
ready to be made water-tight.
• Phases I and II of works to the main roof
are now 80% complete. We are almost
ready to start on Phase III, with materials
being delivered to site next week.
Internal works
• All internal blockwork in the new
café is now complete.
• The changing rooms and staff rooms in
the main building have been stripped
out, and the installation of new M&E
assets are now progressing.
• The low-level café and changing areas are
now ready to be made water-tight.

Main car park
• The car park at the back of the leisure
centre (on the southern edge of East
Park) is now fully paved and the base
coat tarmacking has been completed.
To make the site as secure as possible during
construction, a guard is on patrol throughout
every night of the week, and CCTV is also
in place at strategic points around the site.
Despite this, damage is still being done –
for example to the perimeter fencing.
This is obviously a concern from a project point of
view as it costs time and money to make repairs.
We are also concerned that those
responsible for causing the damage will
also compromise their own safety, and
urge them to stay well clear of the site.
