To me, design is about curiosity.
Each new project leads to deeper
observations and a desire to learn
about and push boundaries.

Project Type: Developing a visual system

Disciplines: Branding, print, UX

Project One

Paths

Project Description: The project required students to develop

a visual system and new UX for a new company. Paths was
developed to encourage people to make the most of their off
time. Not everyone has a lot of time to travel, so I decided to
develop an app, similar to All Trails; a deck of outdoor activity
cards that can be separated by activity, time and distance;

and two kits with just a few hiking essentials, a waterproof tin,

branded water bottle and other miscellaneous items.

Project Concept: The original app focused on cross-country
travel. The problem was lack of focus on the everyday weekend
traveler. As the project developed, the deliverables became
geared to help a wider audience. The cards are easily packed.
Decks also can be safely included in the waterproof tins that

hold a few basic supplies. The app offers images, videos and user
reviews, as well as GPS directions to each hike. The three items

work well together as a set.

Take your bike, or rent one
if necessary, and head to the
nearest riding trail for a few
hours. Load up on snacks and
water to keep going.

Find 5 caches at least
a mile apart. If you can,
incorporate the search into a
camping weekend.

This trip
requires nothing more than
sturdy boots, water, and any
trail within an
hour trip.

Create a new geocache. Try to
make one each in a rural area,
along a city sidewalk, and then
next to a wooded path within 2
miles of your home.

Friends, family and a little
adventure. Use local
sources for recommended day
hikes. Aim for three hours on
the trail today.

Load the app, get
outside, try to find 10
geocaches today.

Hike in to a secluded
campsite. Take time to
enjoy the surroundings
and turn off electronics.
For this one-day outing, aim
for a daytrip. Look up the most
scenic drives
within a two-hour drive,
and head on out.

Paths

Take the day
to explore a nearby
historical site.

Paths

Know the difference
between a mockingbird,
sparrow or finch? Even if
you do, use today for a
bird watching adventure.
See how many different
species you can find.

Fishing requires
patience and perseverance.
Grab your gear or rent a
poleas you make your way to the
nearest fishing hole.

Kayaking not only is
great exercise, it is a great way
to unwind after a long week. Hit
your nearest lake, coastline or river
and spend
the day enjoying the view
from the water.

Campsites are great for any
level of outdoors
experience. Get friends and
travel two hours or more to
really get away.

A canoe gets you on
the water with room
or a few close friends.
Grab some fishing
poles, a lunch or camping
chairs and get going.

Enjoy a quiet afternoon
at a local pond or lake as you
feed the local waterfowl.

The sounds of waterfront
camping offer a respite from
city sounds. Pitch a tent in
the sand, light a fire and get a
warm drink ready.

Portfolio

Pack your sunscreen,
sunglasses, hat, water,
lunch and blanket, and head
to your nearest waterfront
park for an afternoon picnic.

Remember splashing around
and skipping rocks as a child?
Take a few hours today to walk
along the shoreline. Try to get
a double-digit skip.

Take a
one-night trip on your own.
Bring a simple
dinner abd breakfast, and
enjoy the solitude.

A snow fort may test your
patience, but in the end,
you’ll have a fun,
temporary work of art.

Snow angels!

Check your local visitors
center for day hikes nearby. Stay
local today, but make
the most of the scenery.

Warm clothes, comfy boots
and slow walk in fresh snow.
Too cold? Grab a coffee or
cocoa and enjoy the view
from your window.

Call it what you will—sled,
sledge, toboggan. Take to the
slopes at your nearest park
and be a kid again.

Set your sights on an
escape to somewhere special,
such as the Appalachian, Pacific
Crest or John Muir trails. GPS
in the car, map in hand.

Paths

You, friends and family, an
inner tube and gravity.

Sticks, snow/slush and your
imagination. Build anything,
it doesn’t have to be a
snowman.

Grab a camera and find a
road less traveled.
Find a rural commnunity
within a two-hour drive.
