MiDiv RallyCross Safety Steward Training

What Is a Safety Steward?
A person accepting responsibility from the SCCA to:

Know and execute the safety regulations under
which SCCA operates its events.
Help plan and oversee the safety aspect of a
SCCA event.
Show good judgment in handling real world
situations.
Hold sufficient power to shut-down or cancel
events that are in non-compliance.
Manage any incidents that occur from the
moment they occur until all reports are
completed and reported to the correct people

Why Become a Safety Steward?
To achieve the goal of a safe, fun event.
We can’t run an event without one.
Drivers, workers, and spectators all depend
on you.
People can and do get hurt at SCCA events.
Our entry fees are effected by our insurance
rates, and RallyCross Safety Programs are in
place to help keep those rates low.

How to Become a Safety Steward
Be an annual member of the SCCA.
Attend a training seminar.
Demonstrate capability as a deputy RXSS at
two or more events alongside a licensed
RXSS.
Fill out the Rally Safety Steward application
and submit to SCCA RallyCross Divisional
Steward for review and submission to the
SCCA national office.
Rules and forms: SCCA.com/Downloads

Responsibilities of a Safety Steward
Driver, crew, and guest safety. You are
responsible for everyone.
Stay alert – think ahead - are proper
precautions being observed?
Review the entire safety situation with the
event chairperson(s) before starting the
day.
Read and understand the RallyCross
rulebook, and any regional supplemental
regulations.

Responsibilities of a Safety Steward
• Must follow RallyCross Rules, including those
related to safety and vehicle eligibility.

Factory hardtops, targa panels, T-tops in place.
Don’t allow narrow, tall narrow vehicles to compete.

• Articles 1 (all), 2 (all), 3.1, 3.2, 3.3.A and B, 4
(all except 4.2.E), 5 (all), 6 (all) and 7 (all) are
mandatory for all SCCA sanctioned RallyCross
events.
• Print or download the current RallyCross Rules
from SCCA.com/Downloads and have it with
you at events.

Responsibilities of a Safety Steward
Safety of everyone, not just competitors.
Thinking = Planning = Control = Safety.
Crowd control barriers and marshals.
Minimum spectator distance: 75 ft
No children under 12 in hot areas.
Approve photographers on/near course
only with spotter.
Maintain control of outsider access and
waivers.

Responsibilities of a Safety Steward
Course design
Consider drivers, workers, and the people
watching.
Do not evaluate from a driver’s perspective or a
“fun course” perspective.
Look at it with a “comfort zone.” Anticipate what
you understand might happen.
Plan future course wear corrections. Leave
yourself room to move, factoring in minimum
distance from obstacles.
Work with the course designer, not against them,
if possible problems are perceived.

Responsibilities of a Safety Steward
Course Design per RallyCross Rules
“Events…generally consists of short straight sections and
connecting turns or corners. These events are held on
short courses that emphasize vehicle handling and
agility rather than speed or power”
“Speeds on straight stretches should not normally exceed
40 mph for Stock category vehicles and should not
normally exceed 50 mph for any vehicle. Turns should
not normally allow speeds in excess of 30 mph for Stock
category vehicles; however, the maximum speed in turns
for any vehicle should not normally exceed 40 mph.”
