What is a Data Integration Software?
The concept of data integration emerges with the need for a business to have a unified perspective for data
from different sources. Complex data which is emerging from different sources is collaborated and is
understood in aggregate instead of, in isolation. Data integration basically means a technique for
providing a unified view of enterprise-wide data. There are several ways and tools for achieving this goal.
All the tools and methods are quite different from each other and present a different perspective of data
presentation. Some of the technologies of data integration are Extract, Transform Load (ETL), Enterprise
Information Integration (EII) and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI). More commonly we call it as
data virtualization.
ETL is generally used for integration of large data files and handling large volumes of data. This helps in
data migration and making decisions based on such data. ETL is just a process. Using such a process,
large volumes of data is extracted from various sources. It is then cleaned and converted into a common
format. Lastly, it is loaded into a common reporting database called data warehousing which helps the
businesses to have a unified view and further fulfill all the standard reporting purposes.
A source for the data which is used in ETL comes from various files in Excel data, and flat files like ERP
and CRM.

Once the data is loaded into reporting database, it is then available for querying by various business
processes which can pull the consolidated data into final reports and dashboards. The only drawback of
using such data warehousing approach is that the data available is not always current. The data is pulled
periodically in batches and not in the real time. Although by using various strategies the data can be
pulled real-time, this can place a significant load on the system which can result in performance
repercussions. As a solution what we can do is that we can increase the number of batch updates.
Data Integration Tools:
For large enterprises
Large enterprises generally use tools like IBM InfoSphere Information Server and Informatica
PowerCenter for data integration. These products can provide the scalability for handling a large number
of complex data files by large enterprises. Also, such tools can be utilized across multiple numbers of
projects with any size.
SAS Data Management Platform and the SAS Data Services provide extensive data integration which can
support and tightly integrate with the company’s portfolio.
For medium enterprises
Since medium-sized enterprises have a significant integration needs due to the business prospects and
needs, yet they are working on limited people, budget and time. Such companies can consider integration
tools which can address a variety of data sources. Tools like Oracle, Microsoft, Talend or Information
Builders can be used by such users.
For small enterprises
Such enterprises are doing operational reporting directly from their sources system and are not creating
any data warehouses in order to integrate the source systems. Such enterprises with limited funds and
sources cannot invest in ​data integration tools or IT Software​s. It simply relies more on the existing
applications to do custom SQL coding. The business relies on reporting formats built on the spreadsheets
which are filled manually in order to fulfill the data required for reporting.
Once all the data is in a single location by using any software, various analytical tools can be utilized to
get a clearer picture of the business overview. This can greatly measure performance and help a business
in boosting its performance for the future. Also, minor rectifications can be taken notice of any major
change implementations can be done.
