We see here that more than ¾ of participants are from North America (this is to be expected on a site like
reddit), which makes it more meaningful to divide by North Americans, Norther Europeans and people from
other countries; this is what we do later on. There were 794 participants in our analysis.

In this area we have a variety of ages from as early as 10 (yes, that’s me) to a quite unexpected 69 year old.
Statistically nothing is very surprising, though there is a massive spike of millennials, resulting in almost half
of the participants.

You have to expect a lot of atheists and agnostics on reddit, but we still have a decent amount of Christians,
enough to work with; unlike other religions, where we had to be more general later on.

These are the mean opinions of all participants’ taste of music in these genres – apologies for a limit in
genres; I threw this whole thing together in twenty minutes and was not so careful with it. A neutral opinion
is now a three, one being a strong dislike, two a dislike, four a liking and five a strong liking. Confidence
intervals are very narrow, which is a big plus (all thanks to everyone who participated!). One thing to note is
that most people expressed positive or neutral opinions to most genres; it is likely that it is simply true that
people have positive opinions of most music, but if this were not the case I theorise that people feel
pressure to not be negative towards them as they feel this is harsh. Otherwise there is not much to say,
except that religious music received a quite negative opinion – this probably being because of my ambiguity
with simply stating ‘religious music’. I mainly had gospel-style things in mind, but of course religious music is
much more than just that. Country also received negative opinions, which was no surprise (no offence to
those who like it, I’m just saying that a lot of people don’t).

Now we begin actually comparing musical taste and background. This graph is similar to the former, but also
takes religion into account. There are not really any differences with Pop and Non-metal rock, but with metal
we see that people from Other religions like it less on average. Classical music received mostly positive or
neutral opinions with practically no difference between religions. Both Folk and Country were slightly more
enjoyed by Christians. Nothing to note about Hip-hop, but religious music was much more enjoyed by
Christians – I think this is because Christians might think of hymns, which are positively likeable in opinion.

Here we compare age and religion. Really the only thing we can say about this is that Pagans are young –
really young. Buddhists are on average slightly older, too, ditto people from unmentioned religions.

Finally, we see the difference between age and music preference. The lines for pop, non-metal rock and
religious music are all fairly straight. Hip-hop, is liked less by older people, and country and classical are

enjoyed more as age increases; basically, we are statistically confident in all the age trends. The one
surprising thing is that metal is actually enjoyed more by older people.
