JANUARY 2018

WELCOME TO
LONDON

Get ready to amp-up your stay and say hello to a fresh New Year! Whether you’re
visiting for work or play, I've got you covered with the best locals-only tips to maximize
your stay.

BURNS WEEK AT MAC & WILD
Mac & Wild - 2 locations
macandwild.com/burns
Mac & Wild are one of the few actual, real-life,
proudly Scottish restaurants in London which
means that they take it upon themselves to teach
the rest of us how to do Burns Night correctly.
Join them through the week where they will be
hosting a variety of masterclasses celebrating Rabbie Burns’ favourite things, from whisky and beer
pairings to haggis-making masterclasses and whisky and chocolate pairings. There will be Burns Specials available in both restaurants throughout the
week, including the new Mac & Wild Haggis, Neeps
& Tatties Burger, Rabbie Burns Cocktail and Rabbie’s Drams - a whisky flight dedicated to the poet
himself. It’s booozy - just the way Rabbie liked it!
For the big event itself, Burns Night (Thursday 25th
January) they will be hosting two dedicated Burns
Suppers, one at Mac & Wild Fitzrovia and a Burns
Night Bonanza at Mac & Wild Devonshire Square.
Aye pal, it’s gonna get messy!
22 - 28 January

THE VAULT FESTIVAL
The Vaults, Leake Street, Waterloo
SE1 7NN
vaultfestival/com
Now in their sixth year of running London’s biggest
fringe festival, the VAULT Festival are consistently
curating the finest emerging talents in the fields
of comedy, theatre, music and cabaret. For eight
weeks, this motley crew of performers will be settling into their temporary labyrinthine, 30,000 sq
ft. subterranean home with the sole intention of
entertaining you like there’s no tomorrow. From
satirical stand-up to sketch shows, cabaret, visual
storytelling, circus and my favourite, Immersive
Theatre. Get ready for an interactive musical
based on Peter Pan, from the creatives behind
The Great Gatsby – promising absinthe bars, food
fights and an immersive storyline that’ll have you
hooked. Plus, the Vaults will be swinging open their
graffiti-plastered doors on Friday and Saturday
nights for the VAULT LATES programme, which
ranges from a live music-filled House of Burlesque
lock-in, to a ‘mantastic dance party’ and a Brexitthemed silent disco. Oh and to top it off, there’s
also food from the VAULT Kitchen and quite literally a maze full of bars.

LUMIERE LONDON
Various locations across the city
visitlondon.com/lumiere
London’s about to get lit. A team of talented artists have created specially commissioned works
for the second Lumiere light festival; transforming
some of the city’s more notable buildings with
projections and setting up immersive installations
– including a choreographed performance under
LED-lit umbrellas; a virtual flood using Aurora
Borealis-like waves of light; illuminated see-saws;
and a psychedelic, multicoloured projection onto
Westminster Abbey. This year Lumiere has selected Marriott International as their chosen hotel
partner for the event, so in true W style we will be
igniting the experience with our very own bespoke
cocktail, London Lights.
Stop by and take a sip of liquid light…
18 - 21 January

JANUARY 2018

LET’S PLAY VINYL
Goldsmiths, University of London, New Cross
Road SE14 6NW
soundsystemcultureblog.tumblr.com
UK soundsystem culture is thriving. Check out the
new wave at Goldsmiths’ #LetsPlayVinyl series,
which kicks off with an exhibition full of photographs of current reggae sound system operators. There’ll also be a banging programme of film
screenings, workshops and loads of bass.
11 - 14 January

DOUGH SOCIETY
11 Dispensary Lane, Hackney E8 1FT
doughsociety.com
Sweet-toothed vegan Londoners will no doubt
have heard of Dough Society, the vegan brioche
doughnut purveyors who have been trading at
various markets for the past year or so. Born of ‘a
love of baking, a massive sweet tooth and a love
of dirty American-style food’, Dough Society was
started by husband and wife team who started
experimenting with doughnut recipes when they
couldn’t find anyone selling what they were after.
Get ready as they’re opening a permanent location this month – and it’s going to be a vegan coffee and doughnut shop.

RE:SOLUTIONS
Juju’s Bar & Stage, 15 Hanbury Street E1 6QR

MOON SAFARI ON STEEL PANS
Jazz Cafe, 5 Parkway NW1 7PG
thejazzcafelondon.com

Now in its second year of running, Juju’s Bar &
Stage welcome wellness warriors all over the
country to Re:Solutions – a health and wellness
festival with a difference. As part of the local and
greater London community they use their space
each January as a hub for rest and rejuvenation.
Re:Solutions is all about taking some time out in
your busy lives to look after your bodies and minds
however you wish - for some people that might
be some chilling vinyasa flow combined with a
smoothie, but for others that could be about attending an invigorating dance class to live music
and kicking back with a bespoke conscious cocktail
afterwards at the bar. Collaborators include Moju
juices, Karma Cola and the vegan, refined-sugar
and gluten free Cupcakes and Shhht for guilt-free
indulgence. Their 2018 programme includes yoga,
dance and fitness classes from the likes of Yogahood, Fat Buddha Yoga and Disco Barre as well
many others who will inspire, guide and lend life
wisdom. From lunchtime yoga to swing and cuban
dance classes with uplifting live music, the choice
is plentiful. Working in collaboration with Urban
Temple, this year’s event also sees offerings in unusual and innovative realms, such as Chroma light
yoga with intense coloured light settings, Disco
Barre and Afrofusion.

If your main gripe with French downtempo electronica duo Air‘s debut album of 1998 was that it
just didn’t have enough steel pans in it, consider
your prayers answered – because Steel Pan Fusion
are performing a complete run-through of the entire album. On steel pans.

Until 31 January

INSIDER TIP The new shop officially opens on 17
January but go on the 20 January when they will
be giving away 100 free doughnuts!
