TRANSITIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Independence Associates (IA) is a Center for
Independent Living (ILC), 501C (3) non-profit
located in East Bridgewater MA. IA is one of
eleven ILC’s throughout Massachusetts that
empowers people with disabilities to live as
independently as they choose.
TIP provides job and skills training and internship
placement to youth with disabilities to help them
gain work experience to prepare for future employment. The goal of the program is to expose
youth to work opportunities and assist them with
developing employment skills and marketable
experience as an effort to bring more individuals
with disabilities into the workforce.
Q. Can I participate in TIP without being a
consumer of MRC?
A. No, all TIP participants must be referred by
their MRC counselor for TIP services. If you are
not presently an MRC consumer IA can help
refer you or you can enroll on your own.
WHO WE SERVE
Independence Associates is dedicated to
assisting any person with a disability to be as
independent as they choose.
Our experienced staff works one-to-one at a
location that best suits our consumers
throughout Southeastern MA.
Students selected for TIP will be placed in an
internship site in the community aligned with
their vocational goals and ability to travel to and
from the site. IA will work with the student to
identify a suitable internship site.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR TIP?
Enrolled students (secondary or postsecondary) between the ages of 16-21 with a
disability (physical, learning, emotional, etc.)
Must be a consumer of the Massachusetts
Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Services
Summer Session 2018
Application Deadline: June 8, 2018
Training Dates: 6/12, 6/14, 6/19, 6/21, 6/26,
and 6/28 from 3:30-5:00PM at Independence
Associates, 100 Laurel St. East Bridgewater.
Internship Dates: July 2—August 31, 2018
Referred to Independence Associates by the
consumers’ MRC VR counselor.

Q. How can my MRC counselor refer me?
A. They can sign your TIP application in the
appropriate section or visit iacil.org/mrc and
submit a referral for TIP online.
Q. If my MRC counselor refers me am I accepted into TIP automatically?
A. No, there is an application and admission
process that is determined based on how many
applications we receive and available funding.
Q. How are interns paid?
A. Interns are paid $11/hour either by check or
direct deposit for work and in person trainings
by filling out a timesheet at iacil.org/timesheet
Q. Where might I intern as part of TIP?
A. IA partners with different businesses in the
community and provides them with a free of
charge worker that TIP pays. We try and match
TIP interns to a location that matches their interests. Examples of places interned include
The Salvation Army Thrift Stores, New England
Wildlife Center, Big Y, the YMCA, along with a
local airport and radio station! If you have a
place in mind we would be happy to help you
intern there if the location is accommodating!
Interns paid $11/hour for work and attending
six in person trainings held at IA.
Training Dates: 9/11, 9/13, 9/18, 9/20, 9/25,
and 9/27 from 3:30-5:00PM at Independence
Associates, 100 Laurel St. East Bridgewater.
Summer Session interns are required to
work a minimum of 12 hours/ week for a minimum of 7 weeks.
Internship Dates: October 1– December 21,
School Year Session interns are required to
work a minimum of 6 hours/week for a minimum of 12 weeks.
Q. Does IA provide an on-site job coach?
A. No, IA staff will check in at the internship
location at least once every two weeks but we
do not provide job coaches. Your MRC counselor may be able to accommodate you though!
Interns are limited to one 100 hour session,
25 hours per week, and can not work Sundays or holidays without permission from the
Youth Programs Coordinator.
Q. What if I can’t attend all of the trainings?
A. Online modules must be completed in place
of one or more trainings but are unpaid.
