Accordion Sewn HSTs:
“Using Oompah to Give Some Oomph to Your Scrap Quilts”**
Developed by Beth Helfter of EvaPaige Quilt Designs

HSTs are a staple in quilt design, but
as a scrappy designer I’ve had one
complaint about the traditional
method of making two at once that
match – they are too symmetrical to
create scrappy enough projects. I
want to throw as many
combinations of fabrics into a design
as possible, so I started to think
about how much BETTER it could be
if I could create HSTs that didn’t
have a match, without wasting half
of the fabric. And somehow my brain
did not fail me, and came up with
the Accordion Sewn HSTs. Once you
try it, you’re going to be hooked!
I can’t wait to keep coming up with
projects for you to maximize the
potential of this technique!

“Beth, I have to tell you that the half square
triangle technique is brilliant!
Before trying this it looked totally insane and
complicated and too much trouble to make
HSTs - but I am totally in love and will be
using the method for all of my HSTs from
now on! It was a lot of fun and I totally
enjoyed this. It was a very simple process;
once you have the squares cut and in your
hand it became almost a natural movement.
Thank you for thinking this up.” – Rita
