DOESN’T KNOW WHO
JESUS IS, OR DOES IT?
Google assistant has recently been quite inconvenient for the Google home
users as it was not able to answer “who is Jesus?”. Several Google users
have been seen showing their frustration about this matter.
The users have complained that the Google Assistant is not answering their
question regarding Jesus or God. While asking the question, Who is Jesus? The
virtual assistant does not recognize the question and says that it doesn’t know how
to help them with that question.
Users have shown their frustration by posting the videos on social media wherein,
the Google assistant is not answering while asking about Jesus. However, in the
same video it is able to answer about other religious questions including Buddha.
It has been very disruptive for the Google home users and they have clearly shown
their disappointments on this. Google itself didn’t aware about the issue until these
complaints were raised by the users.
Some users even accused Google of being anti-Christian as the virtual assistant
was easily answering while asking about the other religious figures like Buddha
A well known TV producer and author David Sams also shown his extreme
disappointment on this matter through his post on Facebook wherein he shared a
video of his own experience about the same question with the Google virtual
His posted video was stating below mentioned questions asked by him and answers
replied by the Google Assistant. Have a look on that conversation.
“OK, Google. Who is Jesus Christ?” David Sams asked his Google Home.
“Sorry, I’m not sure how to help,” the Google assistant replied.
Then he asked, “who is Buddha?” and Google assistant read the first sentence of
the Buddha Wikipedia page.
When Sams asked about himself, Google assistant read his Wikipedia page, too.
Then he asked again.
Sams: “OK, Google. Who is Jesus?”
Google Home: “Sorry, I don’t know how to help with that.”
Sams: “Unbelievable. OK, Google, who is Jesus Christ?”
Sams: “My apologies, I don’t understand.”
After this video Google was accused of being bias and so many other allegations
were also made about the same. But, Google waved off all the allegations and
provide a reasonable explanation for the whole concern. Google statement on this
matter is mentioned below.
“Some of the Assistant’s spoken responses come from the web, and for certain
topics, this content can be more vulnerable to vandalism and spam. If our systems
detect such circumstances, the AI chatbot might not understand and reply.
“If similar vulnerabilities were detected for other questions – including those about
other religious leaders – the Assistant also wouldn’t respond. We’re exploring
different solutions and temporarily disabling these responses for religious figures
on the Assistant.”
