“Fairy Stories Before The Faerie Queene”
Fairies have a long history in English literature, from at least the
twelfth century to the present. This lecture will focus on the first
four hundred years of that history. We will look at their folkloric
entanglements, their dovetailing with both Christianity and
paganism, and their appearances in the imaginative literature of
the Middle Ages. These fairies are strange, idiosyncratic, and
unpredictable, and so are the stories that are told about them.
