The name Canada comes from a misunderstanding by Jacques Cartier,

a 16th century French explorer. When Cartier was visiting the new

world, the native people wanted to invite him to visit their village, The
word for'village' in their language was 'kanata'. Cańer thought they
were talking aboutthe whole country and when he returned to Europe
he referred to the new land as'canada'.
The first people in Canada came from Asia b€tween 15,000 and 30,000
years ago. Canada is one of the most multi-cultural countries in the
world but less than 500 years ago the only peop|e living there were the
Aboriginal people or 'the people who were here first'. Today all the
