Brochure Critique
The original brochure sourced from “AKMO Fence & Steel Co.” contains many
errors and examples of poor graphic design:
The cover leaf:
 The cover leaf alone features four different fonts in two different colours. The
reader’s attention is automatically drawn to the information written in red. This
information is trivial compared to the corporate logo and service description which is
written in blue.
 Serif fonts would’ve worked much better here.
 All the information written in blue has been overlaid onto a slightly lighter blue
background. From afar, this information would be almost indistinguishable to make
out, not least due to it being very text-heavy.
 The company’s website and/or phone number aren’t displayed on the cover leaf
meaning the reader has to physically look through the brochure to find out more, an
avoidable inconvenience.
“About us” section:
 Awkward phrasing: “We offer service contracts on service on as needed basis by our
trained technicians on our equipment or your preexisting equipment”.
 The information that has been specifically boxed and bordered is not the most
important element of the page and only distracts the reader.
 The address, phone number and website are very subdued at the bottom of the page.
This information would be better displayed in red.
 There are no GPS coordinates or QR code.
Projects and Accomplishments section:
 Heading too long and grammatically convoluted.
 The image used occupies a lot of space yet serves no real purpose. An image of one of
the company’s projects would work better as the text on the image in question is
indistinguishable. The addition of yellow is aesthetically unpleasing too.
 Due to the large image, the text on this section has been compressed when as a list it
should be tidy.
 The list is too long at 12. 10 should be the maximum. Multiples of 5 are more familiar
to readers regardless.
 “Your Home!” is too ambiguous for a factual list.
 The contact details for Sales and the Safety Manager are extraneous.

There are a few grammatical errors in this brochure. Examples include: “a LA”,
“preexisting” and “fences, gates, and access items”.
There’s no company slogan.
A lot of information is repeated throughout each section. It makes the brochure
unnecessarily hard to follow. Clearing up the awkward phrasing would help here.
The overall background design of this brochure is dull and bland. The blue gradient

does very little aesthetically. Borders between leafs, more contrasting colours and a
two-tone background instead of a gradient would ease the monotony.
The “TWIC certified” graphic is needless as this fact is mentioned twice in the
brochure.
All headings should be underlined for clarity.
