Study Overview
Society for Conserva/on Biology

Four loca)ons in the City of Kingston were monitored (2012/2013) by the
Society for Conserva)on Biology (SCB) to document incidents of turtle
mortality.


McIntosh Perry Report

•  Summarized the SCB turtle mortality.
•  Provided an overview of exis)ng site condi)ons.
•  Consulted with regulatory agencies to obtain background informa)on on
the four loca)ons.
•  Reviewed mi)ga)on measures u)lized to reduce turtle road morality in
other jurisdic)ons.
•  Presented reasonable and prac+cal methods to reduce turtle road
mortality.

•  By area Frontenac County has lost 69.7% of wetlands that existed pre-seSlement (c. 1800).1

We have lost significant amounts of wetlands in Southern Ontario . The remaining wetlands are
become increasingly important habitats for freshwater aqua)c turtles.

Increased Density of Road Networks
•  From 1935 to 1995 Ontario’s road networks expanded from 7,133 km to more than 35,637 km.
This has led to nega)ve impacts to turtle species 2.
