Module 1 – This Program Can Change Your Life
Have you ever wondered how some people overcome incredible odds? What about those
people who ignore the many resources available to them and seem to only see the negative?
Why do some people merely “go with the flow” and never achieve anything unless they are
following someone else who takes them by the hand and leads them?
This program uses something called XYZ Theory to help you recognize the stages of your own
development, and become more aware of when you fall into one of three patterns of behavior:
X, Y, or Z.
As you build your skills in seeing these patterns, you will recognize what aspects of your life are
within your control and how to use your resources and a positive attitude to fulfill your dreams.
This theory was developed by Dr. Kim Scott, who was born and raised in Barstow California.
She brings 20 years of school counseling experience, and has served as an administrator in
schools and in non-profit organizations. Kim was the Founder and Director of an after-school
program called -Teen Focus- for 10 years. The original Teen Focus Program was a personal
development program for at-risk (female) youth, and since that time Teen Focus has evolved
into a complete non-profit program.
Dr. Scott recently wrote a self-help, two book series called X_Z & Y ...Which one am I? This
manual/workbook focuses on self-empowerment & self-improvement through the power of
"choice". Dr. Scott is launching an educational coaching business that will also serve at-risk
youth and young adults. She has a counseling style that encourages students to become selfmotivated, and believes that self-motivation is the key to true success. She has worked with the
at-risk population her entire career and she wants to continue serving those in need throughout
Dr. Scott’s credentials include a doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology, a master’s degree
in Education Counseling, and bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science.
However, beyond her many years of experience and advanced degrees, Dr. Scott wants you as
a learner to know that she can relate to young people struggling to find their way. She writes,
quote, “my life has been turbulent. I've faced tough times growing up. I wanted to fit in but
couldn't really find a place that suited me. I was awkward and had a low self-esteem. Therefore
- I can relate. The information in this program comes from personal experiences or the
experiences of others around me. It also comes from watching students that I have worked with
over the years.” End quote.
As you work through this program, you’ll find questions and opportunities for reflection that will
help you assess yourself and identify your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you
determine how to overcome your barriers and what, or who, can help you on your journey.
You will also see how you can become trapped in a downward spiral or a vicious cycle, and that
you do not have to stay there. You can find a way out. You can find your place in life. Despite
the challenges we all face, the ultimate direction of our lives is in our own hands, and our
success in life is based on how well we can navigate through these challenges.
We’re going to explore XYZ Theory in more detail in the next module. But first, we’re going to
take a look at some specific words and explore what they mean to us personally.
