RESIDENCY (1994 – 1997)
I did my general surgical residency in the above mentioned institution which is
recognized as one of the leading medical and post-graduate training schools in the
country. I had the opportunity to do a wide variety of general surgical work initially under
supervision and later (1996 –1997), independently. The trauma unit of this hospital is
situated where expressways and railways converge into the metropolis of Mumbai
(Bombay) with a population of 12 million. It is the busiest and best-organized trauma
center in the country. I worked in this unit as a senior surgical trauma registrar for 6
months during my residency.

POST MASTER OF SURGERY EXPERIENCE

1.

I was working with PROFESSOR DR. V. N. SHRIKHANDE and DR. A. G.
NANDE from August 1997 to October 1998 and from October 2000 to March
2001 in SHRIKHANDE CLINIC and in the DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL
SURGERY, BOMBAY HOSPITAL INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES,
MUMBAI (BOMBAY).

SHRIKHANDE CLINIC, established in 1977, is a well-known referral center for
management of Gastrointestinal problems. It attracts observers and trainees from
all over the country.
BOMBAY HOSPITAL, established in 1949, is the largest multi-speciality private
hospital in India with a capacity of 930 beds. It is recognized as a post-graduate
training institution since 1992.

During this period, I was actively assisting in surgeries of the Pancreas
(Puestows, Whipples, pancreatic necrosectomies), gall bladder, common bile
ducts and the small and large bowel. I also assisted in Laparoscopic procedures
such

as

cholecystectomies,

inguinal

hernias,

fundoplications,

and

appendectomies and learnt to perform Diagnostic Upper GI endocopy
independently. I also continued my general surgical work in management of
hernias.

2.

I worked with DR. PRAFUL DESAI, former director and chief of surgical
oncology of TATA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, from March 2000 to July 2000 in
Oncosurgery, in BOMBAY HOSPITAL. In this department, I was trained in
breast surgery, lower esophageal surgery and gastrointestinal surgery.

3.

From April 1st 2001 to July 31st 2001, I was working as clinical fellow of DR. P.
JAGANNATH in Gastrointestinal Oncosurgery, LILAVATI HOSPITAL, Mumbai.
In this department, I was actively assisting Dr. Jagannath in major GI and
hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgeries.

4.

Since August 1st 2001 to July 31st 2002, I was working as a clinical fellow with
DR. P. JAGANNATH, consultant surgeon, GI service, Department of Surgical
Oncology – TATA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, exclusively in Gastrointestinal and
Hepato-biliary-pancreatic cancer surgery.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

1.

Internship training in Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary-pancreatic surgery
at the MAYO CLINIC, ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA, USA, in September 1993
under PROFESSOR D. M. NAGORNEY.

2.

From November 1998 to February 2000, I was a fellow in the Department of
Visceral and Transplantation Surgery, University of Bern, Inselspital, Bern,
Switzerland. I worked under the supervision of PROFESSOR M. W. BUCHLER
and DR. HELMUT FRIESS. Prior to further pursuing clinical surgery, I wanted to
develop a scientific research background. In this department I worked as a fellow
on various aspects of pancreatic disease such as pancreatic cancer, chronic
pancreatitis and acute pancreatitis. My main research topic involved
tropical chronic pancreatitis. In my 15-month stay there, I learnt various
advanced techniques of molecular biology such as RNA extraction, Northern
Blotting,

RT-PCR,

Western

Blotting,

immunohistochemistry

and

In

situ

hybridization. I was also attending the operation theatres and emergency duties.
In addition to various gastrointestinal surgeries, I mainly observed and assisted in
a

number

of

pancreatic

(Whipples

pancreatoduodenectomies,

Duodenum preserving pancreatic head resections) for which this department is
world renowned.

3. In August and September 2002, I was a clinical fellow in the Department of
