7. Louis Ferdinand Destouches, dit Céline (Courbevole, 1894 - Meudon, 1961)
Autograph letter signed, dated “Le 4 Août [Klarksovgaard, 1948]” by the French writer. Céline does not
appreciate either the content or the form of the laborious pamphlets and letters of his correspondent
Charles Deshayes, which he is very circumspect with, undoubtedly out of interest : “…Je trouve votre
opuscule joliment bien troussé et justicier à souhait…” . He is also wary of his often untimely initiatives and
explains why it is preferable not to provoke this”…charogne…” of Charbonnière [Guy de Girard de
Charbonnières (1907-1990)] ambassador who is one of his pet peeves : “…– Mais attention – biaisez en ce

Journalist in Lyon, Charles Deshayes, was fond of Céline. With much abnegation and
clumsiness, he had tried to help the exiled writer by providing him with documentation and with
multiple services. In addition, he was eager to help Céline with his pen by sending his opponents
belligerent and provocative libels of very mediocre quality, which sometimes exasperated Céline, who,
depending on his mood, forgot that Deshayes' texts were often the result of his contradictory
instructions. 2 pp. Envelope with autograph address included. In fine condition.
€ 3500

Chateaubriand expresses his disillusionment with life and politics after the Revolution of 1830 : “…Moi
An interesting record of Chateaubriand character. 2 pp. and

20. Claude Monet (Paris, 1840 - Giverny, 1926)
Autograph letter signed “Claude” , dated “Mardi soir [1892 ca.]” by the illustrious French impressionist
painter. By this letter, presumably written to his family as it is simply signed "Claude" and displays a
hurried and impatient handwriting, the painter announces that he has received the message from his
relatives and advises them “… en arrivant [de] prendre une voiture pour arriver plus vite…” because he will be
heures…”. If the weather is overcast, as he fears, he will wait for them. Then comes what is probably a
reference to the difficulties he was encountering in his work as an artist “…Moins bonne journée
aujourd’hui…”. Monet finally seems to regret being so busy : “…j’aurais été content de vous voir arriver et
pensais à chaque instant vous voir. En hâte, baisers à tous…”. Charming letter written at the time when Monet

Cairo in 1903, Saint-Saëns inscribes an unpublished alternative version which slightly differs from

Then the Bishop adds : “…
Beautiful letter of great spiritual content. 1 p. In fine condition.

27. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Lyon, 1900 - South of Marseille, 1944)
Precious autograph manuscript (75 lines of almost indecipherable handwriting), undated [1938] by the
French writer and poet. Numerated in front I and II by the writer himself, these two pages are covered
with lines of a small, tightly written and difficult to read, as Saint-Exupery wrote for himself this first
draft manuscript, which he used in chapter VII of his famous collection of autobiographical essays
‘Terre des Hommes’, evoking a series of events in his life, mainly from the time he worked for the
Aéropostale (Air postal service), the central element of this story being his accident with his navigator
André Prévot (1907-1947, mechanic of Saint-Exupery) in the Libyan Sahara in 1935, where the two
men almost died of thirst. As this manuscript is a preparatory draft, it contains many variants
compared to the definitive text, here is an excerpt : “Tel est le désert.
In fine
condition.
€ 4800

28. Jean-Paul Sartre (Paris, 1905 - ib., 1980)
Important lot of one autograph letter signed and one autograph document dated 17 November 1953
by the French philosopher and writer. After the death of the journalist and former communist minister
Yves Farge (1899-1953), his widow asked the philosopher for a word of sympathy in memory of her
husband. Sartre sends here his original text (probably a first draft, as it contains some deletions and
corrections) where he refers to the former president of the movement as a “…Combattants de la paix et
de la liberté…” as well as the “Congrès de Vienne” where, having seen the action of the “French pacifist”,
he had had the opportunity to know him better : “…du premier coup, il m’a séduit par sa puissance silencieuse,
In the letter accompanying the
manuscript, Sartre informed Mrs. Farge that he would unfortunately not be able to go to Austria,
because the adaptation of his play Kean”… passe ce soir en générale et il faut que je sois auprès des acteurs toute le
semaine qui suit…”. He hoped to be freer and wished to have the opportunity to tell her in person of all
his respectful friendship. 2 pp. In fine condition.
€ 3900

He has read L'Ile and is happy that his correspondent has added “…quelques nouvelles
