The layout and height requirements of the hangar are special, which directly affect the structure of
the hangar. Due to the large span of the hangar, the self-weight of the structure (mainly the roof
system) accounts for a large proportion of the total load. If the self-weight of the structure can be
reduced, significant economic effects can be obtained.
The steel structure has the advantages of high strength, light weight, small cross section,
weldability , and simple manufacturing process. Therefore, it is common to use steel structures as roof
load-bearing systems in large-span structures, such as the Beijing Capital International Airport Hangar.
The spatial structure system is well-stressed and light in weight, and can solve problems that
cannot be solved by some planar structure systems. The space structure such as the shell structure, the
space frame structure and the suspension cable structure has been widely used as the roof system of
large-span buildings. The plane size is 170.15 × 83.62 meters and consists of prefabricated tubular
trusses. The steel is high-strength steel with a yield strength of 450 MPa. The entire roof is supported
on 8 columns. In addition to the general load, the roof can also bear 700 tons of equipment weight.
The hangar roof of the Federal Airport in Frankfurt, Germany uses a suspended strip structure with
a plane size of 270 × 100 meters and is divided into two spans. Each span consists of 10 strips of 135
meters long and 7 meters wide.
