“Most
assuredly I
say to you
that you will
weep and
lament, but
the world
will rejoice;
and you
will be
sorrowful…”
“But I will
see you
again and
your heart
will rejoice,
and your joy
no one will
take from
you.”

The Order of Matins: Jubilate
Why Should Cross and Trial Grieve Me

Common Versicles
L O Lord, open my lips,
C and my mouth will declare Your praise.
L Make haste, O God, to deliver me;
C make haste to help me, O Lord.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Praise to You, O Christ. Alleluia.
Old Testament Reading
25

To whom then will you compare me,
that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
26
Lift up your eyes on high and see:
who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
calling them all by name,
by the greatness of his might,
and because he is strong in power
not one is missing.
27
Why do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the LORD,
and my right is disregarded by my God”?
28
Have you not known? Have you not heard?

Isaiah 40:25–31

The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29
He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
31
but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Epistle Reading
1 Peter 2:11–20
11
Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your
soul. 12Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may
see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
13
Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14or to
governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. 15For this is the will of God, that
by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16Live as people who are free, not using your
freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God.
Honor the emperor.
18
Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19For
this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20For what credit is it if,
when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious
thing in the sight of God.
Reading of the Holy Gospel
John 16:16–22
16
[Jesus said:] “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17So
some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and
again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18So they were saying, “What does
he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he
said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me,
and again a little while and you will see me’? 20Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will
rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow
because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a
human being has been born into the world. 22So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will
rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”
Responsory
L Forever, O Lord, Your Word is firmly set in the heavens.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.
L Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.
L Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
C Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.

Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Sermon
Prayer of the Church
Kyrie

C

Lord, have mercy;
Christ, have mercy;
Lord, have mercy.
Lord’s Prayer
C Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.

NEWS & NOTES
The Latin title for today – the Third Sunday after Easter – is “Jubilate” which reflects the opening words of
the Introit - “Make a joyful noise.” More literally, Jubilate means, “O be joyful.” These words have their origin
from the opening of Psalm 100.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: This past Friday, Gov. Pritzker amended his “shelter-in-place” order, allowing
churches to be deemed “essential services.” However, there is still a 10 person limit for all church gatherings in
effect. In light of this news, it is my joy to announce that beginning next Sunday, May 10th, we will hold several
abbreviated Divine Services throughout the day. Our elderly and at-risk members will get priority for signing
up, and on Tuesday, May 5th, an online signup will open up for everyone else (Pastor Heller will pass along this
information when it becomes available). Pastor Heller will take extra care in sanitizing all communion ware,
door handles, etc. between each service, as well as wearing PPE. If you are comfortable with this, please join us
next Sunday! If you are still weary about venturing out, we will be airing a streamed service at 9am for your
edification. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call Pastor Heller at (847) 477-4656.
