Scientists
On April 17, scientists from the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery
Institute, Hong Kong University, Scripps Research and other institutes
published a study on bioRxiv that revealed 30 existing drugs that can prevent
replicating of SARS-CoV-2. A very large part of these drugs are completely
different from the drugs currently tested in normal clinical trials to investigate
the potential for treatment of COVID-19, and it was not previously known that
they have the hope of treating COVID-19.

Dr. Sumit Chanda, who led the study, said: "This is the first comprehensive drug
screening using the live SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most of the drugs identified in this
study can be clinically tested immediately or within a few months. We hope that
one or more of these drug candidates will save many more lives while we wait
for a vaccine."
Specifically, the scientists screened 30 candidate molecules obtained by
screening approximately 12,000 drugs from the "pharmacy" called ReFRAME.
ReFRAME was founded by the Scripps Institute and funded by the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation, it aims to speed up the fight against deadly diseases with a
new use for old drugs.
In this new study, each compound in ReFRAME has been tested with the live
SARS-CoV-2 virus. The virus in the study was isolated from patients from
Washington State and China. Finally, the ability of 30 drugs to inhibit viral
replication is gratifying. The researchers summarized their findings into the
following three main points:
1. Twenty-seven of the 30 drugs identified in this study have not yet been
evaluated for their potential to treat COVID-19. Of these drugs, 17 drugs have
been approved for safety in clinical trials for other diseases. Among them, four
drugs such as clofazimine, acitretin, tretinoin, and astemizole have been

approved by the FDA for the treatment of non-COVID-19 diseases.
2. Of the 30 drugs that can inhibit viral replication, 6 drugs that effectively
inhibit Sars-CoV-2 live virus concentrations may be effective and well-tolerated
in humans, including PIKfyve kinase inhibitor Apilimod, cystatin inhibitor
MDL-28170, Z LVG CHN2, VBY-825, ONO 5334 and CCR1 antagonist MLN-3897.

3. Three of the 30 drugs identified in this study are being evaluated in clinical
trials for the treatment of COVID-19, including remdesivir and chloroquine
derivatives. The researchers pointed out that since this new study also
confirmed that they can effectively prevent the growth of SARS-CoV-2, they
further support that they have the potential to treat COVID-19 and continue
clinical trials to verify their effectiveness in patients.

Finally, the researchers emphasized that each drug or experimental compound
they identified needs further evaluation in clinical trials to prove their
effectiveness in treating COVID-19 patients before they can be widely used.
