Essay Quarrying Against HB2 Legislation Dear North Carolina General Assembly and North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, Attached to the following essay are the signatures of parents, students, teachers, and staff members of Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville, North Carolina.1 We, signed below, extend our belief in the principles of acceptance, inclusion, and equality to all people, with the perception that regardless of religion, ethnicity, race, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or any future trait of marginalization, all people should be free to lead full and happy lives. We assert that the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act or House Bill 2, passed on March 23, 2016, is a direct threat to these principles and the wellbeing of all North Carolina citizens, particularly transgender citizens, and has no place in our state and our school. We hold belief that: The sections of the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act and the results of said sections are contradictory to the justifications for the law listed within in the document itself. House Bill 2 is designed to protect North Carolina citizens from discrimination.2 However, the language of the bill discriminates against transgender people by defining gender purely on biological grounds and by allowing businesses and schools to discriminate against their workers and students, specifically in regards to public restrooms and facilities. In addition, the presidency of this law over local governments denies the ability of towns and cities to protect their residents from discrimination and undue hardship. House Bill 2 is intended to aid in the operation of intrastate business and attract new venues to this state.3 However, the nullification of the freedom to sue for unjust discrimination in the workplace harms businesses and the people that run them. These rights revoked from all North Carolina citizens and discrimination towards transgender people has resulted in business being lost in the state. We maintain that the sections of the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act and the results of those sections directly undermine the justifications for House Bill 2 which are as follows: to protect North Carolinians from discrimination and to improve the flow of business within our state. Our perception holds that House Bill 2 targets vulnerable transgender citizens, denies discrimination protection for all citizens, and damages state business at a hazardous level. 1 The opinions stated in this address are personal and do not represent the school or district of those that hold them. Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act , Page Four, Part III, Section 3.1, lines 2427; Page Five, Part III, Section 3.3, lines 69 3 Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act , page one, lines 1420 2 We believe that House Bill 2 is an unjust law that defies our strongly held personal beliefs of acceptance, inclusion, and equality for all people. It denies North Carolina citizens the right to lead full and happy lives with equal protection and without undue hardship. We believe the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act discriminates against transgender people and is detrimental to the wellbeing of all North Carolina citizens and its businesses. We hold these sincere personal beliefs in our hearts and our minds, and therefore will not in good conscience support House Bill 2 in any form whatsoever within the walls of our school and the borders of our state. Online Privacy and the Dangers of Surveillance What is Government Surveillance of Technology? As the name suggests, Government Surveillance of Technology is when the Government has the authority to monitor all types of technology. This includes phone calls, emails and text messages, webcams or microphones, keystrokes, web searches, gps and much more. Every type of privacy you thought you had is all gone when you can be spied on you at any time. This is Edward Snowden, if that name sounds familiar that’s because a movie was made about him in 2016. He is relevant to this topic because he worked with the CIA during the Obama administration and leaked data being assembled to track all forms of digital communications by the NSA. Not just foreign Governments and terrorist groups were subject to this surveillance but also regular American citizens. He fled to an undisclosed location in Moscow Russia after this leak due to multiple charges by the American Government. To some he is seen as a hero but to others as a terrorist. Does this occur in Canada? Bill C-51 is an anti terrorist legislation put in place by the Harper administration which gives the CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) expanded power to monitor technology. Under this bill promoting terroristic acts becomes an offence under the criminal code. A larger crackdown on terrorist propaganda in the form of online and computer files will happen. Police can now arrest people for suspicion without warrant. CSIS can interfere with terror plots. And finally, your personal information is shared with more departments. What type of message can lead to an arrest? The vagueness of this bill doesn’t specifically state what is against the criminal code. What is considered promotion of terrorism can be considered differently between what you think and the Government thinks. Therefore if you make a sarcastic threat online you could be arrested without a warrant under suspicion of terrorism. The Government doesn’t know the true intent behind a message. Because of this, society has to conform to a restriction on free speech to avoid being imprisoned. Is the Government morally justified when monitoring online activity and messages? I feel as if the results of my research questions will prove that government surveillance of technology is on average immoral and harmful. People don’t act the same way they do online as in person. There for legal action should not be put in place when people exercise their right to free speech online. For that reason it is ineffective in finding the actual criminals but instead puts regular citizens at risk which is immoral and harmful. Puts regular citizens at risk With more power being put in the hands of the Government in terms of online activity, the margin of error goes up as well. Whatever the authorities deem “suspicious” online gives them the authority to now arrest you immediately. These lack of precautions will cause a influx in innocent citizens getting in trouble with the law even if not guilty in intent. The majority of citizens don’t want to be monitored If most citizens don’t want laws inhibiting their privacy uselessly, it is immoral to force legislation upon them. There hasn’t been shown to be a need for Bill-C51 in Canada and yet the Harper government in 2015 put it in place. Because it isn’t needed and citizens disagree with it, it is immoral. However if there was a clear problem with terrorism and there was a strong correlation between terrorists and online activity then it would be moral. A random sample of 1500 Canadian adults of different races and provinces that were phoned for these surveys. 92% of the participants are somewhat to more concerned about their personal privacy. 74% of the participants feel as if they have less protection of personal info now than they did 10 years ago.

Graphics Designer: u/GrandTheftDox Contributors: u/Crater_Cake, u/ZAWGURN & BlastingAwsome u/The-Potato-Lord: Editor-in-Chief ELECTION RESULT, CONSTITUTION AND MORE POPULATION DECLINE CONTINUES IN THE YAM REPUBLIC AS POLITICAL FLOURISHING OCCURS. Technocrats Triumph “A party of order or stability, and a party of progress or reform, are both necessary elements of a healthy state of political life.” - John Stuart Mill After a short but gruelling election campaign (for details see Issue six) the polls finally closed and the arduous process of vote counting began. On the morning of the 7th of May 2017, u/Bluy9888 released the official election results. The election was a great success for the Technocrats who won the presidency by a margin of ~1% with 31.1% of the vote with the socialists coming a close second. In the House, the results were similar with the Technocrats winning 17 seats while the other parties made up the remaining 33 seats. The Senate race saw the Technocrats coming away with 6 seats while the socialists came away with 4. The others split the 5 other seats, (see the makeup of the Yamliament below). The next election will take place over the first weekend of June from the 2nd to the 3rd. The Executive branch is led by president u/xxtheproonexx and vice president u/sultanskyman. The roles of Yametary of state, war and treasury are taken by u/Ansaberk, u/Diztortion_ and u/awesomeboy101 respectively while u/nomaxx117 takes up the role of Yametary of education. Many citizens were alarmed by the power the Technocrats now exercised over the Yamliament with u/UserNumber33 asking “Does this mean the technocrats can overrule the current system and change our democracy to a dictatorship if they wanted to?” However, u/Bluy98888 was able to allay the citizen's fears by explaining that the Technocrats don’t hold a majority and would need to pass an amendment to gain more power. He also indicated that the military would become involved to restore peace and democracy in an emergency. u/Sir_Oakijak leader of the r/CarrotEmpire while feeling less threatened by the Technocrat majority released a statement in which he said “Well I can't complain about the results. I'm really surprised at the results though. I was not expecting a Technocrat majority everything.” 2 Analysis Our resident statistician u/grandthefdox performed some analysis to break down the voting patterns of the citizens of the Yam Republic, (see below). The result of the analysis showed that while most people vote for the same party in each of the elections (President, Congress and Senate) a significant proportion also spread out their vote and vote for different parties in different races. This uncovers that though there is some level of homogeneity in the voting patterns of citizens many are not fixed on one party alone. This insight may be of use during the next election campaign - if voters could be influenced to vote for one party only by campaign material then the makeup of the Yamiament could be very different. The Constitution of the Yam Republic By u/Crater_Cake After days of intense debate, compromise and a leak to the r/YamPress the Yam Republic completed drafting its constitution. “We the People of the Yam Republic, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquillity, provide for the common 3 defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the Yam Republic.” The constitution is made up of nine articles separated into several sections and sets the rules for the State, the Legislative branch, the Executive branch and more. Largely based on the Constitution of the United States of America, the Constitution of the Yam Republic ensures equality for all citizens, promotes itself as one union and places the power of the government in the hands of the people. ‘Created by the people, for the people’, is a message commonly construed about the Constitution of the United States of America, and first said by the great American president Abraham Lincoln. However, at first, this was not the case with the Constitution of the Yam Republic. Initially, the Constitution was drafted by the Technocratic Party and a few select Eternal Leaders of the r/YamRepublic. However, u/spladlesrus realized that this was unfair, and backed by u/Crater_Cake and u/stickittotheman666, u/spladlesrus got two representatives from each political party to be allowed to be a part of the drafting of the constitution. This was a true representation of the people’s involvement in government and equality for all yams. The yams have proved so far to be the most developed of all the nations in the Great Food Alliance (GFA). According to some data collected by u/The-Potato-Lord, the Yam Republic currently has 14,885 citizens, over 85 times as many citizens as the next largest member of the GFA, r/CabbageCountry. The yams have a lot more manpower (or should I say foodpower?), to create a prominent nation rapidly and efficiently. May the yams contribute to, promote, and work towards a strong GFA. Military Recruitment The r/YamMilitary had much cause for celebration this week as it’s new destroyer was unveiled (below left) by u/spladlesrus who announced: “With the official deployment of our newest vessel, We will proudly patrol the seas maintaining dominance of the water and the air.” Meanwhile, with recruit numbers slowing the r/YamMilitary created some propaganda 4 material to drive up recruitment. u/TheAverageDafoe produced a poster showing some proud and brave Yammy Seals entitled “Join The Yammy Seals Today.” Cocoabean Welcome and Religion By u/BlastingAwsome Courtesy of Bill 018 (see Bill section), r/CocoaBeanCountries were recently inducted in the Great Food Alliance (GFA). Their new leader, u/BlastingAwsome had proposed the bill last Thursday and had this to say about it: “Thanks for accepting us! We're glad to be here.” u/The-Potato-Lord, emperor of the r/PotatoEmpire welcomed the Cocoa Beans to the alliance, in a statement he said, “I have always admired the Cocoa Beans and I’m delighted for them to join us.” The GFA updated flag and logo can be seen below. In other Cocoa news, the leaders of r/CocoaBeanCountries have decided to establish a new religion and all vegetables have been invited to assist in developing the religion and its sacred texts. We have been reliably informed that everyone who participates will receive a limited flair. 5
