Catatan dalam Penggunaan Eta-Squared dalam Analisis Varians Oleh Wahyu Widhiarso | Fakultas Psikologi UGM | 2010 Setelah membaca artikel tulisan Stephen Olejnik dan James Algina yang berjudul “Generalized Eta and Omega Squared Statistics: Measures of Effect Size for Some Common Research Designs” yang diterbitkan oleh Jurnal Psychological Methods tahun 2003 cukup mengagetkan. Nampaknya apa yang selama ini dilakukan peneliti untuk mengestimasi nilai sumbangan efektif (efek ukuran/effect size) dengan menggunakan analisis varians (ANAVA) baik untuk penelitian eksperimen maupun non eksperimen perlu diperbaiki. Selama ini peneliti yang menggunakan program SPSS banyak menggunakan fasilitas default program tersebut untuk menghitung effect size. Dengan mengklik tombol effect size maka nilai partial eta squared akan muncul. Nah, biasanya yang kita laporkan untuk menunjukkan berapa sumbangan efektif adalah partial eta squared tersebut. Padahal banyak catatan untuk menggunakan koefisien tersebut. Yang dianjurkan oleh Olejnik dan Algina (2003) adalah generalized eta squared. Apa bedanya ? PENGERTIAN • • • • Eta‐squared adalah salah satu ukuran hubungan; sama seperti koefisien korelasi pada skala 0‐1 yang dapat memberitahu anda berapa banyak varians di VARIABEL DEPENDEN (VD) yang dapat dijelaskan oleh masing‐masing VARIABEL INDEPENDEN (VI). Eta‐squared analog untuk R kuadrat dan dapat dianggap sebagai sebuah persentase pada skala 0‐100. Eta‐squared adalah informasi tambahan yang hanya berguna jika hubungan atau perbedaan yang disimpulkan dari analisis adalah signifikan. Eta‐squared mencerminkan persentase varians VD dijelaskan oleh VI pada data sampel. Sebagai estimasi varians yang dijelaskan dalam populasi itu adalah berpotensi menghasilkan informasi yang bias (over atau under estimate). Omega‐squared adalah salah satu alternatif yang disarankan.\ PERBANDINGAN Eta‐squared • • • • • Eta‐squared = SSbetween / SStotal Ada satu eta‐squared pada tiap efek (misalnya eta pada interaksi). Eta‐squared jika ditotal maka hasilnya sama dengan 1 (100% efek) Tidak tersedia pada SPSS. Persen dari varians dijelaskan oleh tiap variabel independen. Partial eta‐squared • Partial eta‐squared = SSbetween / SStotal + SSerror 1 • • • Tersedia pada SPSS. Jika ditotal maka jumlahnya tidak sama dengan 1 sehingga sulit untuk diinterpretasikan Not recommended. Catatan • • • Jika diterapkan pada ANOVA satu jalur maka eta‐squared dan partial eta‐squared adalah sama. Untuk desain yang lebih kompleks, yang sebagian eta‐squared umumnya akan lebih besar dari eta‐squared. Untuk ANOVA campuran, eta‐squared harus dihitung secara terpisah dalam konteks efek‐ subjek dalam tabel ANOVA dan efek antara‐subjek tabel ANOVA. Dalam situasi ini, eta‐squared jika dijumlah dapat bernilai 1 untuk efek dalam subjek (within subject), dan 1 untuk efek antar subjek (between subject). Tapi mereka tidak bisa semua dikombinasikan untuk sama 1. KESIMPULAN Partial eta squared dipengaruhi oleh jenis, desain, strategi dan pengukuran, dengan demikian peneliti perlu berhati‐hatilah dengan membandingkan eta‐squared antara studi yang berbeda, terutama jika desain bervariasi. Misalnya ada dua penelitian A dan B bertujuan menguji pengaruh faktor terapi perilaku untuk menurunkan kontrol diri. Prosedur, waktu, intensitas dsb pada kedua terapi adalah sama. Penelitian A melibatkan variabel jender, sedangkan penelitian B tidak. Karena komposisi variabel yang berbeda, maka jenis analisis kedua penelitian di atas juga berbeda. Jika secara empirik jender turut mempengaruhi keberhasilan terapi (kontrol diri), maka nilai peranan terapi pada kedua penelitian di atas berbeda. Peranan terapi pada penelitian A (melibatkan jender) menjadi lebih kecil dibanding dengan penelitian B (tanpa melibatkan jender). Jika kita menggunakan partial eta squared melalui SPSS untuk melihat sumbangan efektif perlakuan, maka hasil dua partial eta squared pada masing‐masing penelitian tidak dapat dibandingkan. Hal ini dikarenakan partial eta squared tergantung pada desain eksperimen. Mengutip apa yang ditulis di artikel Olejnik dan James Algina, dijelaskan bahwa Cohen (1973) telah memperingatkan bahwa penggunaan eta kuadrat parsial kurang tepat dan bahkan dapat menyesatkan bila desain penelitian melibatkan variabel lain (blocking). Adanya variabel lain dalam desain faktorial akan mengurangi sel Sum of Square Within Subject. Akibatnya, komputasi eta kuadrat parsial atau omega kuadrat menghasilkan estimasi ukuran efek yang tidak sebanding dengan perkiraan ukuran efek dalam studi yang tidak memasukkan variabel lain. Dengan kata lain, eta kuadrat parsial atau omega kuadrat akan memberikan perkiraan ukuran efek yang dapat jauh lebih besar daripada ukuran efek diperkirakan dari sebuah studi yang tidak memasukkan variabel lain. Meskipun orang melihat bahwa ukuran efek yang besar adalah konsekuensi dari rancangan penelitian yang kuat, peningkatan ukuran efek karena variabel lain tidak dapat dibandingkan dengan penelitian yang tidak melibatkannya. Singkatnya, peneliti yang melaporkan hasil ANOVA, termasuk dengan satu atau lebih faktor mengulangi langkah‐langkah, didorong untuk melaporkan GENERALIZED ETA SQUARED seperti yang didefinisikan oleh Olejnik dan Algina (2003). Ditambahkan oleh mereka bahwa Generalized Eta Squared dan Omega Squared kuadrat memiliki dua keuntungan utama. Pertama, statistik ini memberikan ukuran efek yang sebanding di berbagai desain penelitian populer dalam pendidikan dan psikologi. Saat ini, sebagian besar peneliti 2 yang memilih untuk melaporkan ukuran efek sebagai proporsi varians VI yang menjelaskan VD namun mengabaikan peringatan dari Cohen. Dengan menggunakan prosedur yang ditulis dalam artikelnya, peneliti dapat meluruskan kelalaian tersebut dan menggunakan ukuran efek yang dapat dibandingkan (comparable). Generalized Eta Squared dan Omega Squared dapat memberikan efek‐langkah ukuran efek yang dapat dibandingkan meski penelitian yang dilakukan memiliki desain penelitian yang berbeda dengan populasi tertentu.
