10 STEPS TO GETTING A  WHITER SMILE    Step One- Your dentist- They know how to create a whiter smile!  Dentists are not just there for when you have a toothache. Regular six monthly check-ups and  visits to the hygienist should be a natural routine. These are trained professionals who can help  you to maintain good gum health; keep your teeth in good shape, fix any damage and advise  you on the best way how to get that whiter smile and to have the best teeth possible. Your gums  support your teeth and are just as important and good oral hygiene prevents bad breath and  tooth loss.  Step Two- Good oral hygiene routines- you can help create that whiter  smile  It is not just your dentist who looks after your teeth; you do! Brush your teeth at least twice a  day with a good toothbrush and a good fluoride toothpaste. Do not add fluoride to your diet as  it can actually stain your teeth- most water areas have fluoride added and a fluoride toothpaste  should be sufficient. There is a bewildering array of brushes and pastes on the market; if you  find it all a bit confusing, ask your dentist. They are well placed to give you expert advice on the  best tools for keeping your teeth in tip top health and help you on your way to a whiter smile.        2      Ideally you should brush your teeth after every meal, but if you cannot, then at least drink a  glass of water after each meal to rinse away harmful bacteria. Learning how to achieve a whiter  smile is not complicated- it depends on you getting into good routines.  Learn to floss in between your teeth where food gets trapped and bacteria flourish. Flossing  materials depend on the size of the gap and your teeth, try several until you find those that best  suit your individual mouth.  Don’t forget your tongue- that is another breeding ground for bacteria and a tongue scraper is a  good investment for dealing with this.  Step Three – towards that whiter smile – your dental hygienist  Your dental hygienist is trained to clean teeth more thoroughly than you are- so take advantage  of this expertise. They are also likely to have access to cleaning tools not found in your average  bathroom. Having your teeth cleaned, scaled and polished once a year makes good sense. Much  of your everyday browning and staining can be removed this way. Once this is complete you will  be better able to judge whether you need further treatment to whiten your teeth. You may well  notice that the hygienist has shown you how to get a whiter smile already- by keeping them  clean- but using their professional dental equipment- this may be enough to create your whiter  smile.  After a visit to the hygienist maintain that feeling of smooth clean teeth by watching what you  eat (see step nine)  Step Four – existing crowns and missing teeth spoiling that whiter smile!  If you have decided that you want your teeth whitened you need to consider the existing crowns  and gaps or missing teeth. Don’t make the mistake of having your teeth whitened before the  necessary maintenance on your existing dental work. Old crowns and veneers will not match  your newly whitened teeth so it is best to get those replaced to match; consider this expense  when calculating the cost of whitening. You want the finished result to be an even whiter smile  without gaps or oddly coloured teeth between!     Step Five– whitening treatments for an even better whiter smile      3      Having had a proper dental clean you are in a better position to assess the colour of your teeth.  If you still want to go ahead with teeth whitening then you need to do some research.  Essentially you have the choice of at home treatments you do yourself, or a visit to the dentists  for in house dental whitening. The main difference between the two procedures is the strength  of product being used on your teeth. It is illegal and dangerous to use at home products that  contain more than a 6% concentration of any bleaching or whitening agent. You risk serious  damage to your health if you use products for which you are not trained and without dental  supervision. Do not take that risk!  You may want to start with a whitening toothpaste if your teeth are not too badly discoloured to  see if over a period of time this improves their appearance, creating a whiter smile you are  happy with. You will certainly find the toothpastes useful after other whitening treatments to  maintain your whiter smile so they are not a wasted purchase.  Research the home products available and make sure that you only buy from an accredited  supplier who is approved and qualified. You will find that most home treatments fall into the  categories of toothpaste; whitening strips or dental trays filled with whitening solution. Some  are easier to use than others. For a more detailed explanation of these methods, see our teeth  whitening guide and reviews of teeth whitening products  If you think you might need stronger treatment or are not confident using home products then  consult your dentist first. They may suggest similar methods such as trays, bleaching and some  may offer laser whitening. If you do not feel confident that the treatment is explained well by  one practitioner then consult another; your oral health is important!  Step Six – crooked and misshapen teeth can spoil your whiter smile  For some people, their teeth being whiter is not the only issue. Maybe you have crooked or  misshapen teeth. Your mouth may need a bit more help to achieve the straight whiter smile you  desire. If the irregularities or gaps are quite small then veneers are a good option. Children and  young adults may benefit from braces to straighten their teeth. Either way, veneers are  relatively simple to apply and can have dramatic results. Braces can be very effective and are a  lot less unsightly nowadays than the old metal rows of yesteryear.  Over time, some people find that their mouth has become overcrowded and teeth have grown  crookedly and are out of alignment. This may need more significant dental work and veneers  may not be the solution. Bonding, contouring and shaping teeth can be done with various      4      materials but again you need to consult with your dentist as to how the old reshaped and newly  whitened teeth will be matched. Your dentist will advise whether you should wait to whiten and  match to the newly shaped teeth or whether it is best done first and then the teeth are matched.  Step Seven – Missing teeth  Occasionally we lose teeth, either due to accidents or dental decay. Gaps in your teeth can be  managed by creating crowns on either side of the gap and then a bridge with a new false tooth is  inserted into the gap. Some dentists offer tooth implants which are expensive and will only  work in certain situations. There is also, of course, the more traditional method of dentures to  replace missing teeth.  Whichever method is used; if you are also whitening your teeth you need to make sure the new  false tooth matches in colour.  Step Eight – After care of your whiter smile  Having whitened your teeth you now need to take care of them!  Immediately after teeth whitening you may experience some sensitivity and it is best to use  specially formulated toothpastes and mouthwash to deal with this. Avoid extremely hot or cold  foods as these can be painful for newly whitened teeth. Once the sensitivity has settled your  dentist may recommend that you maintain your whiter smile with whitening toothpastes.  Step Nine – Change your habits!  So, you now have achieved your whiter smile and you want to keep it that way. Now is the time  to change the habits that may well have contributed to the staining and discolouration of your  teeth in the first place.  If you are a smoker, then quit or your lovely whiter smile will quickly become yellow with  nicotine and all the benefit of treatment will be lost. Reduce or cut out those highly staining  beverages; tea, coffee and red wine. If you do drink these, do so in small quantities and brush  your teeth immediately afterwards to minimise the damage.  Keep away from soft drinks; they are murder on tooth enamel, eating away at it and are often  full of colourants that will stain your teeth. Tooth enamel is not a fan of extremely hold or cold  foods either so limit these as much as possible. If part of your whiter smile involved bonding,  bridges or crowns then be careful about eating hard food such as nuts. You could crack the  enamel and do damage to your dental work.      5      Step Ten – Back to the dentist!  Follow up on your teeth whitening treatment by regularly visiting your dentist. They will want  to see you a few weeks or months after the treatment anyway, if they are any good, but make  your visits part of your routine. Your dentist is the best placed person to advise you on the care  of your teeth and how to maintain that straighter, whiter smile.
