Talk Notes: Looking Up
Bible Reading: Colossians 1:15-23
Discussion questions
What do you think this church is about?
What do you think the meaning of life is?

What the Bible says
We are going to have a look at what the meaning of life is, according to the Bible. In the letter to the
Colossians, Paul reminds the Christians in Colossae who Jesus is in relation to the rest of the universe.
15“He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation; 16 because
!
by Him everything was created, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether
thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for
Him. 17 He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together. 18 He is also the head of the
body, the church; He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to
have first place in everything. 19 For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, 20
and through Him to reconcile everything to Himself by making peace through the blood of His
cross— whether things on earth or things in heaven.
21 And you were once alienated and hostile in mind because of your evil actions. 22 But
!
now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death, to present you holy,
faultless, and blameless before Him— 23 if indeed you remain grounded and steadfast in the
faith, and are not shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has
been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become a minister of
it.” (Colossians 1:15-23 HCSB)

What questions do you have about this passage?

What is the scope of Jesus’ rule?

Where do we fit into this picture?

A lesson from Nicolai Copernicus

One of the ways that we express “putting Jesus at the centre of everything” is to use words “worship him”
or “magnify him”. How do the following passages explain how Christians should worship Jesus:

Passage

How we should worship Jesus

“1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I
urge you to present your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your
spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this
age, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind, so that you may discern what is the good,
pleasing, and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2
HCSB)
“21 Jesus told her, “Believe Me, woman, an hour is
coming when you will worship the Father neither
on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You
Samaritans worship what you do not know. We
worship what we do know, because salvation is
from the Jews. 23 But an hour is coming, and is
now here, when the true worshipers will worship
the Father in spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants
such people to worship Him. 24 God is spirit, and
those who worship Him must worship in spirit and
truth.”” (John 4:21-24 HCSB)
“34 Summoning the crowd along with His disciples,
He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My
follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross,
and follow Me. 35 For whoever wants to save his
life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because
of Me and the gospel will save it. 36 For what does
it benefit a man to gain the whole world yet lose
his life? 37 What can a man give in exchange for
his life? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and of
My words in this adulterous and sinful generation,
the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when
He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy
angels.”” (Mark 8:34-38 HCSB)
“23 Therefore if the whole church assembles
together, and all are speaking in other languages,
and people who are uninformed or unbelievers
come in, will they not say that you are out of your
minds? 24 But if all are prophesying, and some
unbeliever or uninformed person comes in, he is
convicted by all and is judged by all. 25 The secrets
of his heart will be revealed, and as a result he will
fall down on his face and worship God,
proclaiming, “God is really among you.”
26 How is it then, brothers? Whenever you come
together, each one has a psalm, a teaching, a
revelation, another language, or an interpretation.
All things must be done for edification.”
(1 Corinthians 14:23-26 HCSB)

Passage

How we should worship Jesus

“28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom
that cannot be shaken, let us hold on to grace. By
it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence
and awe; 29 for our God is a consuming
fire.” (Hebrews 12:28-29 HCSB)
How might this answer the meaning of life question?

How this church is going to put it into practice
We want to make sure that Jesus is at the centre of everything we do.
Having been reconciled to Jesus, we want to make our relationship with Him the centre of all that we do by:

Reading the Bible and praying outside of Gospel Community and Gatherings.

Seeking to please Jesus in the way we relate to others, how we work, what we do in our

households, how we study, in fact in all of our lives.

Making decisions, as individuals, that please Jesus.
We want to do this as a church when we meet together by:

Listening carefully to what Jesus is saying by listening to the Bible.

Praising God through singing to Him.

Encouraging each other by sharing what Jesus is doing in our lives.

Lovingly caring for each other in a way that pleases Jesus.

Seeking, as a community, to make decisions that please Him.
What we are promising to do:

I have committed myself to making Jesus Christ the centre of what I do and how I live my
life and therefore will seek to eradicate sin from my life.
I will seek to please God and grow in my concern for Him, His people and His World more
and more.
I will, by God’s strength, seek to magnify God more and more in my life by word and deed
but will not seek God’s approval and justification through my life because Jesus Christ has
already given me that justification.

For Further Thought:

What would my family and friends say would be the driving force of my life?

Given that life is all about Jesus, and not me, how should my life change?

Leaders Notes
The idea here is for the group to spend time on actually magnifying God. I think we spend a lot of time
talking about it, but we need to actually do it.
Discussion Questions:
When have you felt you have been magnifying God the most?

Have a look at the following passages, how do they describe magnifying God:
Hebrews 12:18-28
Isaiah 6:1-13
Revelation 4-5

Write up on a piece of paper those characteristics of God that make him worthy of being magnified
What happens to us when we forget that the point of life is to magnify or glorify God?
Confession: when you have you forgotten to magnify God and how did it affect you?
How can we magnify God better:
- in out lives?
- in our Gospel Community?
- as a wider church?

Spend the rest of the night in prayer to God about how great he is:
Further Reading:
Read the following passages and meditate on how magnification is expressed in each one:

Soma Culture: How do M’s and Structures fit together
The membership course is designed to help you understand what we at Soma are about and whether you
want join us as a formal part of our community.
The important things that you need to know about Soma is that there are:
5 Principles
2 Major Structures
5 Principles
There are four principles to our church and they
are:
Mission (our face out to the rest of the world)
Membership (integration into our community)
Maturity (the edification and growth of our community)
Ministry (the building of our community around us)
and all of these should lead to
Magnification: (the God centeredness of what we
do up towards him). We might sometimes refer to
these principles as the M’s.

Magnification:
This is a good lesson, but I wonder of the point of the lesson shouldn’t be how to magnify God and perhaps
we should be looking at Revelation 4-5.
The main point:
God is the centre of EVERYTHING we ARE and DO.
Introduction:
Show a big picture of the solar system of the two theories
Get the kids to talk about what they see is the differences
Talk about :
Ptolemy
Ancient Greek Philosopher (Philosopher is someone who describes how the world works)
Came up with a thought that earth was the centre of the universe and everything else like the moon, sun and
other planets moved around it. (geo centric)
Copernicus (1473)
Worked out that the earth was not the centre but the sun and everything went around the sun. (helio centric)
Compare the two theories and point out the differences
Bible passage: The Creation account : Genesis 1
Read the account from the Holman Bible and get the kids to draw the things that God created each day
Day 1: Light /dark
Day 2: waters and sky
Day 3: land and plants
day 4 : sun / moon / stars
day 5 : Living creatures
day 6 : man
day 7 : rest
You draw what this looks like as you read what is being created. It is to look like a solar system diagram,
similar to that you have shown earlier on.
Starting with God as the centre , add what is created each day starting from out and move in towards God.
Man should be the closest to God. (should look like a target)
Ask the kids of what they notice in what you have drawn

Application Questions / discussion:
What does this say about God?
What does this say about man?
How should we treat God?
How are we going to show that God is number one :!
how I act everyday
!
at home with my family
!
at school with my friends
Pray:
!

For God’s help to make him number one in our lives

Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 9

Craft activity:
Cut out 7 circles of different sizes, (but according to the order of the creation account) with different coloured
cardboard.
Have the colour of the card relate to the thing created on that day eg:
Day 1: Light /dark (white)
Day 2: waters and sky (blue)
Day 3: land and plants (green)
Day 4 : sun / moon / stars (silver)
Day 5 : Living creatures (brown)
Day 6 : man (skin coloured/cream)

The centre of the concentric circles will be God (gold).
Pin all the circles together with a draw pin and show them how all of creation revolves around God!

Week 2: Mission
Talk: Heading Out
Bible Reading: Romans 10:1-17
Discussion questions
What do you think is the most important question that a person faces in their life?

How do you feel about telling people about Jesus?

How have you felt when others have brought up the subject of Jesus?

What the Bible says
Today we are going to have a look at the Christian message is and why it is so important to make sure
people know it. Romans is a letter that Paul wrote to remind people of what the Christian Gospel or
message is. We are not going to look at all 16 chapters of Romans, but we will have a look at some of the
key passages that sum things up. This is sometimes called the “Roman Road” and we are looking at the
lookout places.
“From the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine
nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what He has made. As a result,
people are without excuse. For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show
gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were
darkened.” (Romans 1:20-21 HCSB)
What do we learn about God and how he should be treated?

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23 HCSB)
What is our state before God?

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.” (Romans 6:23 HCSB)
What are the consequences of our state?

Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 11

But what is the offer that God gives?

“But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for
us!” (Romans 5:8 HCSB)
How is God able to give that offer of eternal life?

Note that this is one of the meanings of our slogan: His Body, Your Place. Jesus took on his body at the
cross, the punishment for sins in your place.

“...if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him
from the dead, you will be saved. With the heart one believes, resulting in righteousness, and
with the mouth one confesses, resulting in salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10 HCSB)
What is the response that is required from us?

“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever.
Amen.” (Romans 11:36 HCSB)
How does the gift of salvation show God’s glory more vividly?

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who
believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16 HCSB)
Apart from believing, what role do we get to play in what God is doing in the world?

How this church is going to put it into practice
At the end of the day, the most important thing we can do to love people is to introduce them to Jesus. We
do that by telling people the Christian message.
Understanding the message of Jesus and wanting to make it known, we want to as individuals to :

Make sure I am able to explain what it means to be a Christian simply and easily.

Be committed to praying for people that don’t know Jesus.

Be committed to getting to know people who don’t know Jesus.

Be committed to making sure my life reflects the message.
Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 12

As a Church we want to:
❏ Work as a community to make the message of Jesus known, acknowledging that not everyone has
the gift of evangelism, and that is it is often easier for all if this is done as a community.
❏ Work towards making sure our lives and actions reflect the words of the Gospel
❏ Seek to make the Gospel known and rely on it as the source of salvation for people.
❏ Make sure that all people are welcomed to our church, though we also need to acknowledge that not
everyone will feel that this church is for them, we must be as accommodating as we can.
❏ Make sure no-one leaves a meeting without being spoken to.
❏ Be supportive of mission endeavors that are glorifying and faithful to Jesus in other places.

What we are promising to do:
❏ I am committed to work with this church to make the message of Jesus known to the world.
❏ I am committed to praying for the world and those who do not know Jesus.

For Further Thought:
❏ Why not read the rest of the book of Romans to see where these key points fit in.
❏ Where am I on the “Roman’s Road”?
❏ How many people do I really know who don’t know Jesus?

Discussion Notes
(This discussion might need some adjustment if there is a non-Christian present)
What has been the best Gospel conversation or opportunity you have had? (or seen someone else have)

There seems to be a number of ways that the Apostles in particular sought to make the Gospel known:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Writing: namely the Gospels (Luke 1:1-4)
Personal or 1 to 1 conversations (Acts 16:11-13)
Small group or houses (Acts 20:20)
Public declaration (Acts 17:16-34, 19:8-10)

Confession: what has stopped you from taking an opportunity to share the Gospel?
How much of the Gospel do you need to share? Here are some slogans, are they enough to say someone
has told you the Gospel?
2 Timothy 2:8
Romans 1:1-6
1 Corinthians 2:2
Revelation 14:6
The answer here is Francis Shaffer’s circles and arcs. You don’t need tell people everything (circle) to be
able to say you have told them the gospel. You need to tell them enough to be able to extrapolate the rest of
the circle (arc).

How can we magnify God better:
- in out lives?
- in our Gospel Community?
- as a wider church?

The way this tool works is that we look for the people we spend time with (columns) and work out the best
way we can help them to take a step towards knowing Jesus (rows). So you should end up with some

While it is important to pray for each other, make sure that everyone prays for 1 other person who is not
Christian and try and keep this up for the rest of the year.

Soma Culture: Gospel Communities
What’s a Gospel Community?
These are called Gospel Communities because they are more than just a group of people who meet together
for an hour or two during the week and that’s all. This is a community, these are people who share their
lives together.
But the community is about the Gospel. The reason people are together is not just because they like each
other or they have something in common like soccer or the love of food, but to live out the Gospel. In effect,
we are asking you to be part of two churches: a small church (your Gospel Community) and a big church
(The Sunday Gathering).
What is it not?
What it is not:
• a Bible study (though the Bible is a central part of what is done)
• a social action or political action group (though it seeks to change the culture around it)
• a support group (though it will seek to encourage and care for its members)
• an outreach event (though it will seek to reach out to people)
• a special interest group (though it might be around a particular interest or geography)
• a clique (though it is a community)
What’s the Difference?
Between a Gospel Community and a Bible Study?
Some of you might be familiar with the idea of a Bible Study. What’s the difference? Here are a few quick
notes
• You go to a Bible Study and you join a Gospel Community. One is an event and the other is a community.
• You go to a Bible Study to study the Bible, you participate in a Gospel Community to live out the Gospel.
These two are not completely divorced, but the plan of the Gospel Community is to spend more time living
out the passage that was preached at the Gathering.
• Bible studies are for Christians to grow, Gospel Communities are for Christians and non-Christians to hear
and see the Gospel.
• Bible study groups are designed for the members of the group to love each other. Gospel Communities
are designed to love each other and those outside the group.
Because a Gospel Community is about community it is really important to turn up even when you may not
feel like you are getting anything out of it.
Between a Gospel Community and the Gathering?
Both structures will seek to express love to the people of God and beyond. But the Gospel Community is
where you can be a part of a community where people seek to care for each other deeply. The Gathering is
where you can find opportunities to serve the wider Soma community in a more specialized way.
Soma’s Future...
We want Soma to grow because we want the Kingdom of God to grow. We are seeking to grow Soma by
planting more and more Gospel Communities around the city of Sydney. It may be that you stick with you
Gospel Community for life or it may be you are asked, or see an opportunity to help plant a new Gospel
Community in the future.

The Good News!
recap:
What do we remember from last week?
Who was the centre of everything?
(God)
Why is He the centre of everything?
(Because He made everything)
How did God make everything?
(By speaking)
Lesson:
Go through the “Who will be King” tract and get the children to interact with each little section as its being
read out.
Ask: !
!

“ What do you think about that?”
“ How do you feel about that?”

Allow for each child (who can read) read the passage quoted from the bible to show them where it is coming
from.

Discussion:
What does knowing and being Jesus’ friend mean for you?
What does this mean for your friends who aren’t friends with Jesus?
What will you do so that other people will get to hear about Jesus?
(Pray, Show everyone what a friend of Jesus looks like, tell others...)
Memory Verse:

Pray:
Thank God that he made the world
Thank God for sending Jesus so that I can be friends with him and live with him forever
Pray for my family and friends (get them to name them) who are not friends with Jesus yet that they will
know Jesus
Pray that God will help me to keep being good friends with Jesus and trusting Him in everything
Craft activity:
get the kids to draw ways in which they can tell their friends about Jesus (through events, a situation) in a
comic strip.

Week 3: Membership
Talk: Drawing In
Bible Reading is 1 Corinthians 12
Discussion questions
How important is it for Christians to go to church? Why?
What is the sense of responsibility that Christians have for each other’s behavior?

What the Bible says
Today we are going to look at the way we are related together as a church
1 “About matters of the spirit: brothers, I do not want you to be unaware. 2 You know how,
!
when you were pagans, you were led to dumb idols—being led astray. 3 Therefore I am
informing you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can
say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different ministries, but the
!
same Lord. 6 And there are different activities, but the same God is active in everyone and
everything. 7 A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person to produce what is beneficial:
8 to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge
by the same Spirit, 9 to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one
Spirit, 10 to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing
between spirits, to another, different kinds of languages, to another, interpretation of languages.
11 But one and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each one as He wills.
12 For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many,
!
are one body—so also is Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—
whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14
So the body is not one part but many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t
belong to the body,” in spite of this it still belongs to the body. 16 And if the ear should say,
“Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” in spite of this it still belongs to the body. 17
If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were an ear, where
would be the sense of smell? 18 But now God has placed the parts, each one of them, in the
body just as He wanted. 19 And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? 20 Now
there are many parts, yet one body.
21 So the eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” nor again the head to the feet, “I
!
don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, all the more, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker
are necessary. 23 And those parts of the body that we think to be less honorable, we clothe
these with greater honor, and our unpresentable parts have a better presentation. 24 But our
presentable parts have no need of clothing. Instead, God has put the body together, giving
greater honor to the less honorable, 25 so that there would be no division in the body, but that
the members would have the same concern for each other. 26 So if one member suffers, all the
members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:1-27
!
HCSB)

What is the relationship between the individual members of the church and the community?

Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 18

"For if anyone were sufficient to himself and needed no one else’s help (such is the pride of human nature),
each man would despise the rest and be despised by them. The Lord has therefore bound his church
together with a knot that he foresaw would be the strongest means of keeping unity..."
John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion. IV.3.1.
What sorts of gifts are mentioned?

Why then is it good to be a member of Christ’s body?

Note that this is the other meaning of our slogan: His Body, Your Place. Jesus has given everyone gifts to
use and a place, including Yours, in His Body
There is another side to being a member of the body:
"My failure is not just my own business; others are going to be affected by me. It is possible for us to think
very selfishly about our salvation and to feel that our personal behaviour is entirely our own affair. The
principle of mutuality reminds us that, whether we like it or not, we affect one another within the body both for
good and ill"
Michael Griffiths, Cinderella with Amnesia (London: IVP, 1975). p63.
How is this put into practice in the Corinthian church?

“1 It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and the kind of sexual
immorality that is not even condoned among the Gentiles—a man is living with his father’s wife.
2 And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief so that he who has committed this
act might be removed from among you. 3 For though absent in body but present in spirit, I have
already decided about him who has done this thing as though I were present. 4 In the name of
our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, along with my spirit and with the power of our Lord
Jesus, 5 turn that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be
saved in the Day of the Lord.
6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast permeates the whole batch of
dough? 7 Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch, since you are unleavened.
For Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old
yeast, or with the yeast of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote to you in a letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 by no means
referring to this world’s immoral people, or to the greedy and swindlers, or to idolaters;
otherwise you would have to leave the world. 11 But now I am writing you not to associate with
anyone who bears the name of brother who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a
reviler, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. 12 For what is it to me to
judge outsiders? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But God judges outsiders. Put away
the evil person from among yourselves.” (1 Corinthians 5:1-13 HCSB)

What sorts things worry you about dealing with people in this way?
Why is it important for our community?

How this church is going to put it into practice
This church has is a formal sense of membership, for people coming from another church this can be an
unusual thing. We want to be clear that membership of this church is not what saves you, nor do we
believe that unless you are a member of this church you are not a Christian, but we think it is helpful.
Privileges of being a member are

Being able to serve in the church in a formal capacity.
❏ Having the church help you develop the gifts that God has given you. We want to help you to do that
so at the end of this course we want to talk with you about four things:
What are you passionate about when it comes to serving God?

What are you good at?

Can we trust you to do what you are doing?

How can we help you develop your gifts?

❏ Know that the community, especially the pastoral team, is seeking to care for you.
❏ Have a say in the general direction of the church. For example we will have one teaching series a year
that is the members choice.
❏ Have the opportunity to join our online community

Responsibilities of being a member are
❏ Declaring myself to be a follower of the Lord Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
❏ Praying regularly for church.
❏ Living a life of ongoing repentance.
❏ Agree to the Members Commitment.
❏ Agree to the Doctrinal Statement.
❏ Prayerfully, sacrificially and joyfully give financially to the work of the church. We are suggesting that
you think about giving 10%: 5% to church and another 5% to something else: AFES, a mission
organization, etc. Please have a look at our “Giving to Soma” booklet.
Reasons for leaving as a church member:
❏ You want to serve at another church or ministry. We want to send you out prayerfully and celebrate
your time with us.
❏ You are not adequately living up to the responsibilities of being a member and we are asking you to
revoke your membership. You may still be participate in Soma, but not as a member, depending on
the circumstances.
❏ You lose respect for the leadership of Soma and cannot sit under the spiritual oversight of your walk
with Jesus. At this point we want to encourage you to find a church and leader who will help you
walk with Jesus.

What we are promising to do:
As a member of this church I will seek to be committed to this community by:
❏ Being committed to praying for the community of this church.

Seeking to give thoughtfully, prayerfully and generously to this church and the wider work of the
Gospel as a reflection of what God has given me.
Seek to grow in my relationship with Jesus by regularly reading the Scriptures, and praying.
Encouraging, where I can, the unity of this and the wider Christian church.
Hold to the truths upheld in the Bible and summarised in the doctrinal statement.

For Further Thought:

What would be some of the reasons that I would or would not become a member?

Are there any responsibilities that I would have trouble living up to?

Soma Culture: Tech Tools
Church...its more than just Sunday
One of the important things about Soma is that we don’t just want church to be about the Gathering on
Sunday. It is about being God’s people together all through the week. There are a few technological tools
that help us with that.
1.Your Phone
We don’t expect you to turn up to everything all the time, but when you don’t turn up to something we
would love to know. Send us a text, to your Gospel Community Leader at least.

2. Soma Weekly Update
We send out a weekly email update every week. It will have all sorts of information that you will find helpful
for the Soma Community. It will also include a ‘special’ which is a link we have to something on the net that
we think might be helpful (or fun) for you.
If you are not getting this then let someone know.
3. Elvanto
https://soma.elvanto.com
This is our online community forum. It is only for members of Soma. We use it to keep in contact with each
other and to do rostering for our Gathering and other things. The first page will look something like this
(without the red bits!):

4. Social Media
We also have twitter and facebook accounts that get lonely and we would love you to spend more time with
them:

Start by giving the kids different body parts to make a body (i.e. give one kid lots of hands and no
feet, another kids all heads, etc.) They won’t be able to do it

Then swap it all around so they can made a anatomically correct body and point out that each body
needs different things - hands, feet, etc.
4. Read the Bible
body of Christ has many different parts, just as any other body does. 13Some of us are Jews, and others are
Gentiles. Some of us are slaves, and others are free. But God's Spirit baptized each of us and made us part
of the body of Christ. Now we each drink from that same Spirit. [b] 14Our bodies don't have just one part.
They have many parts. 15Suppose a foot says, "I'm not a hand, and so I'm not part of the body." Wouldn't the
foot still belong to the body? 16Or suppose an ear says, "I'm not an eye, and so I'm not part of the body."
Wouldn't the ear still belong to the body? 17If our bodies were only an eye, we couldn't hear a thing. And if
they were only an ear, we couldn't smell a thing. 18But God has put all parts of our body together in the way
that he decided is best.
19A body isn't really a body, unless there is more than one part. 20It takes many parts to make a single
body. 21That's why the eyes cannot say they don't need the hands. That's also why the head cannot say it
doesn't need the feet. 22In fact, we cannot get along without the parts of the body that seem to be the
weakest. 23We take special care to dress up some parts of our bodies. We are modest about our personal
parts, 24but we don't have to be modest about other parts.
12The

Week 4: Maturity
Talk: Grow up
Discussion questions
Is there a difference between mature Christians and immature Christians?

What the Bible says
This week we want to focus on what maturity means, Paul explains it as he explains something of his
ministry to the church in Colossae:
!
128“We proclaim Him, warning and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may
present everyone mature in Christ. 29 I labor for this, striving with His strength that works
powerfully in me.
!
2 1For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you, for those in Laodicea, and
for all who have not seen me in person. 2 I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined
together in love, so that they may have all the riches of assured understanding and have the
knowledge of God’s mystery—Christ. 3 All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in
Him.
4 I am saying this so that no one will deceive you with persuasive arguments. 5 For I may
!
be absent in body, but I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see how well ordered you are and the
strength of your faith in Christ.
6 Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, 7 walk in Him, rooted and built
!
up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, overflowing with
gratitude.” (Colossians 1:28–2:7 HCSB)
What do you think Paul means by the phrase “present everyone mature in Christ” in 1:28?

What will that maturity do:
• for the church?
• for dealing with false teaching?
• for understand who Jesus is?
• for how to live the Christian life?
How does he do this, what are the means by which he does it?

But maturity is something that is not just seen in individuals. Do you think the following verses apply to
individuals, the church as a whole or both?
“11 And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some
pastors and teachers, 12 for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body
Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 26

of Christ, 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into
a mature man with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness.” (Ephesians 4:11–13 HCSB)
“12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a slave of Christ Jesus, greets you. He is always contending
for you in his prayers, so that you can stand mature and fully assured in everything God
wills.” (Colossians 4:12 HCSB)

The problem with maturity in and as a church is that we are all at different levels of maturity. Some of us
have been following Jesus for some time, others a short time; some of us have been Christian for a while
but we have not grown much, others have grown greatly in a short amount of time. This means that we will
have some who are strong in the faith and others who are weaker. How does Paul advise people about
how do deal with different people’s maturity?

1

Accept anyone who is weak in faith, but don’t argue about doubtful issues. 2 One person
believes he may eat anything, but one who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 One who eats must
not look down on one who does not eat, and one who does not eat must not criticize one who
does, because God has accepted him. 4 Who are you to criticize another’s household slave?
Before his own Lord he stands or falls. And he will stand. For the Lord is able to make him
stand.
5   One person considers one day to be above another day. Someone else considers every day
to be the same. Each one must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 Whoever observes the
day, observes it for the honor of the Lord. Whoever eats, eats for the Lord, since he gives
thanks to God; and whoever does not eat, it is for the Lord that he does not eat it, yet he thanks
God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. 8 If we live, we live for the
Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we belong to the
Lord. 9 Christ died and came to life for this: that He might rule over both the dead and the living.
10 But you, why do you criticize your brother? Or you, why do you look down on your brother?
For we will all stand before the tribunal of God. 11 For it is written:

As I live, says the Lord,

every knee will bow to Me,

and every tongue will give praise to God.
12    So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
13     Therefore, let us no longer criticize one another. Instead decide never to put a stumbling
block or pitfall in your brother’s way. 14 (I know and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus that
nothing is unclean in itself. Still, to someone who considers a thing to be unclean, to that one it
is unclean.) 15 For if your brother is hurt by what you eat, you are no longer walking according to
love. Do not destroy that one Christ died for by what you eat. 16 Therefore, do not let your good
be slandered, 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace,
and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever serves Christ in this way is acceptable to God and
approved by men.
19    So then, we must pursue what promotes peace and what builds up one another. 20 Do not
tear down God’s work because of food. Everything is clean, but it is wrong for a man to cause
stumbling by what he eats. 21 It is a noble thing not to eat meat, or drink wine, or do anything
that makes your brother stumble. 22 Do you have a conviction? Keep it to yourself before God.
The man who does not condemn himself by what he approves is blessed. 23 But whoever
doubts stands condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from a conviction, and
everything that is not from a conviction is sin. (Romans 14:1-23 HCSB)
How do we deal with different levels of maturity?

Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 27

This is important, really important. Paul stresses how important it is in another letter where he is dealing
with the ethical issue of whether one should eat food sacrificed to idols or not.
8

Food will not make us acceptable to God. We are not inferior if we don’t eat, and we are not
better if we do eat. 9 But be careful that this right of yours in no way becomes a stumbling block
to the weak. 10 For if someone sees you, the one who has this knowledge, dining in an idol’s
temple, won’t his weak conscience be encouraged to eat food offered to idols? 11 Then the weak
person, the brother for whom Christ died, is ruined by your knowledge. 12 Now when you sin like
this against the brothers and wound their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ. (1
Corinthians 8:8-12 HCSB)
How does he describe the act of wounding a weak conscience?

What does Paul say about his own maturity?

“12 Not that I have already reached the goal or am already fully mature, but I make every effort
to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brothers, I do not
consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and
reaching forward to what is ahead, 14 I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly
call in Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore, all who are mature should think this way. And if you think
differently about anything, God will reveal this also to you. 16 In any case, we should live up to
whatever truth we have attained. 17 Join in imitating me, brothers, and observe those who live
according to the example you have in us.” (Philippians 3:12–17 HCSB)
How do you reconcile v12 and v15? Is Paul mature or not?

How does one grow in maturity in faith?

What are the ways we can be distracted from growing in maturity in faith?

How this church is going to put it into practice
We want people to grow as mature disciples of Jesus. That is we want to see people who can:

Understand the importance and role of church
Know and love Jesus more and more
Discern false teaching
Know and want to keep in step with the Gospel

The way that we do this is by presenting Jesus through the Word of God and praying that His Spirit will
grow and mature us. Because of this the ministries of the word and prayer are very important to what we
do in Soma. This is why we have integrated teaching: the teaching programme is not just for Sunday but
we are working towards it being integrated
We seek to mature people in the Gatherings:

Through the preaching of God’s Word.

By training people in living a life of service and equipping them to do so.

Through the idea of ‘shadowing’, getting people who are serving to have others who serve with
them, ready to take over.

Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 28

We seek to mature people in the Gospel Communities

Through the discussing further of God’s Word and learning from each other how we can be more
mature in Christ.

Through the challenging of each other to mature and grow.

Through the challenging of each other to continue to share the Gospel with others.
Both should be accessible and friendly to people who what to know about Jesus, but in different ways. But
they should also be for the maturing of people in their understanding of Christ. Everyone is different and
everyone is at different levels of maturity and we need to be helping each other in growth.
We also have people who are meeting with other people to read the Bible 1 to 1 and we are expecting that
people will be reading the Bible themselves.

What we are promising to do:
I will seek towards being mature in Christ and so:
❏ I will seek to read the Bible and pray regularly myself.
❏ I will seek to be a part of a Gospel Community.
❏ I will seek to come to Sunday Gatherings, Gospel Community and events regularly.
❏ When I do take time to spend with others who do not know Jesus, I will let people at the church
know so the church can support and pray for me.

For Further Thought:

Soma Kids
Kids Lesson: Maturity
We have changed the M on this one in the kids program to maturity to make it a bit easier. The aim of
ministry is maturity.
What’s mature
Show some pictures of babies and adults. E.g.

Young elephant, old one
young horse, adult one
Tadpole, frog
Caterpillar, butterfly
sapling, tree - this is important

Ask about whether you could climb a sapling, build a tree house in one, etc.
Thumbs up
"Thumbs up" is an activity in which the teacher asks the children to hold their thumbs up when they hear
certain words. This is done by the teacher reading certain verses and children paying attention to specific
listening for those words. While reading Psalm 1:1, ask the children to hold up their thumbs if they hear
words such as "God," "blessed," or any positive thing. The children are asked to hold their thumbs down if
they hear words such as "wicked" or anything negative.
Psalm 1
There are two types of people in psalm 1.
What are they like?
How do they end up?
The good person is like a big tree, what happens when the wind comes to a big tree? What happens when
the wind comes to dirt?
How do you grow up to be like the blessed person?
Timeline (Craft activity)
Draw a time line of your life (where they are should be in the middle)
On the top draw the things that you have learned to do (crawl, walk, read, etc.) and the things you would like
to do in the future.
On bottom draw the things that you have learned about God, and what you would like to learn about God.
Memory Verse
    3They are like trees
   growing beside a stream,
   trees that produce
   fruit in season
   and always have leaves.
   Those people succeed
in everything they do. (Psalm 1:3)
Do the memory verse like a tree growing up
Test time
One of the things about a mature person is who to listen to: (Put your hands on your head if it is true and in
your lap if it is not)
Someone says “Jesus is just like everyone else”

Week 5: Ministry
Talk
Discussion questions
What is the role of ‘professionals in ministry’ (like pastors and ministers) in ministry in church?
What are some of the difficulties with volunteer organisations?

What the Bible says
Last week we saw how God has given people different gifts, skills and abilities. This week we want to focus
on what these gifts should be used for. This is an issue that Paul addresses in the letter to the Ephesians:
!
“11 And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some
pastors and teachers, 12 for the training of the saints in the work of ministry, to build up the body
of Christ, 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into
a mature man with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness. 14 Then we will no longer be little
children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of teaching, by human cunning
with cleverness in the techniques of deceit. 15 But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every
way into Him who is the head—Christ. 16 From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by
every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the
proper working of each individual part.” (Ephesians 4:11-16 HCSB)
Try and draw out the logic of this passage:
He...gave...
For...
To...
Until....
Then...
But...
By...

Summing up then, what’s the aim of how people should use the gifts they have been given?

What is so important about the last phrase of the passage?

Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 35

What might that look like in action?

How do the following passages of the Bible help us to understand what our attitude should be as we serve
each other and what is the example that Jesus gives us:
“9 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Son into the
world so that we might live through Him. 10 Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that
He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation* for our sins. 11 Dear friends, if God loved us
in this way, we also must love one another.” (1 John 4:9-11 HCSB)
* Propitiation is a technical term that means “turning aside anger”
How does love relate to serving? Why is it important?

!
“1 Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this
world to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
2 Now by the time of supper, the Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon
!
Iscariot’s son, to betray Him. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His hands,
that He had come from God, and that He was going back to God. 4 So He got up from supper,
laid aside His robe, took a towel, and tied it around Himself. 5 Next, He poured water into a
basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him.”
!
“12 When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined again and said to
them, “Do you know what I have done for you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well
said, for I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash
one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have
done for you.
16 “I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master,  and a messenger is not greater
!
than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.” (John
13:1-5, 12-17 HCSB)

How might you ‘define’ ministry, especially in relationship to ‘love’?

How does ministry relate to mission?

How this church is going to put it into practice
There are all sorts of ways we can love each other, and build each other up. As the church grows it will be
harder and harder to do that for everyone.
It’s impossible to love everyone as much as we can. To make it easier we will:

Try and love a lot of people a few ways through Soma Church and the Sunday gatherings

Try and love a few people a lot of ways in Soma Gospel Communities
Game Plan Series Notes !

Page 36

What we want people to do is to choose one or two ways to focus on serving the wider Christian
community and seek to serve in your Gospel Community as the need arises. You may want to serve on the
music team, the Soma Kids team, the hospitality team or in some other way.
Serving in a young church plant is hard work and we want you to know that can be frustrating at times, but
if we can all share the load as much as we can it will be easier for us all.
As a church we want to take the job of equipping you to be able to serve Jesus seriously. So as well as
running training events such as SAFE days and GC101, we often include training in the Gathering itself as
we want everyone in Soma to be as equipped as possible.

What we are promising to do:
❏ I am committed to the principle of serving the people around me.
❏ I will seek to be trained to be the best servant of Jesus I can be.

Members Commitment
Magnification

I have committed myself to making the Jesus Christ the centre of what I do and how I live
my life and therefore will seek to eradicate sin from my life.
I will seek to please God and grow in my concern for Him, His people and His World more
and more.
I will, by God’s strength, seek to magnify God more and more in my life by word and deed
but will not seek God’s approval and justification through my life because Jesus Christ has
already given me that justification.

Mission

I am committed to work with this church to make the message of Jesus known to the world.
I am committed to praying for the world and those who do not know Jesus.

Membership

As a member of this church I will seek to be committed to this community by:
Being committed to praying for the community of this church.

Seeking to give thoughtfully, prayerfully and generously to this church and the wider work

of the Gospel as a reflection of what God has given me.
Seek to grow in my relationship with Jesus by regularly reading the Scriptures, and

praying.
Encouraging, where I can, the unity of this and the wider Christian church.

Hold to the truths upheld in the Bible and summarized in the doctrinal statement.

Maturity
I will seek towards being mature in Christ and so:
I will seek to read the Bible and pray regularly myself

I will seek to join a Gospel community group with an expectation that I will be committed

to that community.
I will seek to come to church, small groups and events regularly.

When I do take time to spend with others who do not know Jesus, I will let people at

church know so the church can support and pray for me.

Doctrinal Statement
As an Anglican church we hold to the Anglican doctrine of faith, but this is summarised below.
We believe in:
1. The divine inspiration, infallibility and sufficiency of Holy Scripture as originally given and its
supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
2. The unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the Godhead.
3. The universal sinfulness and guilt of humanity since the fall, rendering men and women subject
to God’s wrath and condemnation.
4. The conception of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit and his birth by the virgin Mary.
5. Redemption from the guilt, penalty and power of sin only though the sacrificial death of Jesus
Christ, the incarnate Son of God as our representative and substitute.
6. The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and his present ministry of ruling and
interceding for his people.
7. The necessity of the work of the Holy Spirit to make the death of Christ effective in the
individual sinner, granting him or her repentance towards God, and faith in Jesus Christ.
8. The indwelling and work of the Holy Spirit in the believer.
9. The joy of meeting with other Christians in the church on earth as a manifestation of the
gathering of God’s people in heaven.
10. The expectation of the personal return of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.
