things to do in florence
In case you have never been to Florence, South Carolina, you haven't been to the South,
definitely not the true South where friendliness is just the way we are. There's lots to do in
Florence SC. To name but a few, you might visit any one of the fine restaurants in Florence and
end up being an aficionado of southern cuisine, have a blast at the Darlington grassroots raceway
or explore the Florence Museum and find out about the extraordinary painter William H. Johnson.
Here's a little about the Florence native artist William H. Johnson so as to whet your appetite for
South Carolina art. Though famous with historians of 20th century African-American artistry,
Johnson seems to be unfamiliar to most of the art community. When he was 17, he studied in
Europe whereby he produced and exhibited his original style. But war was brewing throughout
Europe during the time and he came back to Florence in 1938 and continued to develop his form
of painting. Throughout this time period his art transformed into an intense, "primitivist" style
which is today his trademark.
Johnson's style is literally both vivid and mournful and ilustrates an abstract picture of the AfricanAmerican struggle through both a historical as well as individual point of view. The Florence
Museum is definitely committed to conserving Mr. Johnson's life and art through their collections,
events, extended study and ongoing curricula. If you got their today, you might spot five of
Johnson's art pieces around the permanent collection.
Or maybe you prefer to be a little bit less strict. Maybe you 'd rather kick your sneakers off and
splash about a little bit. In the heat that's a dang great idea. Find out if you might grab a locally
grown watermelon as well. Then head on over to the Lynches River County Park. You'll spot it on
the Lynches River in the Pee Dee region. It's a day use park that offers a river swamp with
towering cypress trees and sand hills offering a wide range of vegetation. You can easily fish
should you feel up to it and kayak or perhaps hike the trails. In my opinion I 'd rather grab a picnic
basket from the Starfire Grill, relax in the shade and munch on a drumstick. Once the chicken
gives out, I'll top it off with a bit of cool water melon. Now, that's good.
On the other hand, in case you want a sit down supper or perhaps need to get your strength back
for one more adventure, head on over to the Starfire Grill, you'll find it on 2130 W Palmetto Street
in Florence. I admit, there is actually a ton of doggone good restaurants in Florence SC, but you
cannot go wrong with the Starfire Grill. It's a locally owned restaurant that specializes in American
and Mediterranean cuisine. Their menu is really a little something different. Regarding all the
restaurants in Florence, let's simply say the Starfire Grill's menu is definitely unique. Yet, there's
tons to pick from and you're sure to see tons to satisfy your hunger.
They just remodelled the dining room so you can kick back, enjoy the food and see a little tv if you
prefer on the patio area. In case you're like me, phone in a picnic basket and eat in your pickup.
That's exactly what pickup orders mean when you order from a restaurant in Florence SC. They'll
cater too if you have something special going on. Besides, if you're in a rush, just run in their
shop. Inside there you will be able to purchase containers of homemade chicken salad, pimento
cheese, Southern salsa, Mediterranean noodles salad and a whole lot of other good things. Heck,
you could even buy broccoli cornbread. Now who would have thought to come up with cornbread
with broccoli in it? It seems strange, but man, it is really great.
There's plenty to do in Florence SC. Dining is always a great thing to do. I love it. Run over to the
museum and view Mr. Johnson's artwork, dangle your toes in the Pee Dee River, ramble the trails
and work up an appetite. After that take your pick of restaurants in Florence or just follow my
advice and sit at the Starfire. It's an authentic honest to goodness restaurant made for folks who
love good food. Once you're contented, stick around. You might want to visit some of the other
restaurants in Florence too.
