PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
March 4, 2016
Tifton Women Arrested for Aggravated Identity Fraud
An investigation conducted by the Georgia State Board of
Workers’ Compensation’s Enforcement Division has led to the
arrest of Bertha Gutierrez - Martinez. According to
Enforcement Division Director Stan Bexley, Bertha Gutierrez
– Martinez, was arrested on Thursday, March 03, 2016, and
transported to the Tift County Detention Center where she has
been charged with 1 (one) felony count of Aggravated Identity
Fraud, and 1 (one) felony count of Identity Fraud, 1 (one)
felony count of providing false statements and fraudulent
documents to the State, and 1 (one) count of making false and
misleading statements in order to obtain workers’

The Enforcement Division’s investigation alleges that Bertha Gutierrez – Martinez
provided her employer a social security number that did not belong to her in order to
obtain employment. Subsequently, Martinez sustained a work-related injury and filed a
workers’ compensation claim for benefits using the fraudulent social security number.
Based on evidence obtained during the investigation it was determined that the social
security number Martinez used was assigned to a California man, now deceased.
Martinez also fraudulently completed State and Federal Tax Withholding documents
using the fraudulent social security number.
Insurance fraud affects everyone. To report suspected workers’ compensation fraud or an
employer with no workers’ compensation insurance coverage you can call the State
Board of Workers’ Compensation’s Enforcement Division at (404) 657-7285 or go to our
website at www.sbwc.georgia.gov and file a complaint on-line.
