July Edition MESSSAGE FROM THE GM Dear Members, A warm welcome to our July Members newsletter. I am sincerely pleased to still see strong golfing and social participation from many of you during this period and wanted to personally thank you for your support. TOURNAMENT RESULTS Members Medal Friday, 1st June 2012 Best Gross – Roman Hawczak (73) Best Net – Sharon Hall (64) 2nd Place – Darren Hall (76) 2 Club Winners – Darren Hall, Emanuel Ostojic Etihad Open Stableford Friday, 8th June 2012 DivisionA Place – Brian McClure (40) nd 2 Place – Andrew Morris (37) BB9 3rd Place – John Gower (37) 1st Division B Place – Alex Iapichino (38) nd 2 Place – Alan Frost (37) BB9 3rd Place – Richard Mouder (37) 1st Yas Links held a very successful Summer Open with some 194 participants and some worthy winners. You may have noticed the increased signage and notices in reference to golf course etiquette – we urge all to comply. I would like to advise all, that Yas Links will be announcing new Club Captains at the Members Welcome Back Party on Friday 28th September (Ryder Cup weekend), as well as forming our 2012/13 Members Advisory Committee. Though there is the option to extend existing advisory committee members any member, who wishes to, may put themselves forward for consideration for such a role The Advisory Committee is made up of members (ideally of different Nationalities) who can transparently communicate with the management on both positive and negative issues. It should be noted that its formation is constructive and constitutes no formal voice in any element of the operation of Yas Links and is to be perceived as an Advisory group. Where possible the Club will react and implement suggestions, on the understanding of all, that Yas Links is a proprietary owned and commercial business (unlike some traditional clubs which are essentially owned by the membership). Applications should be made in writing directly to cwhite@yaslinks.com by 31st August 2012. Applicants are required to provide a brief summary of their reason for application and area of preferred focus. I am sure many of you are either travelling or are about to travel and I, once again, would like to wish you all an enjoyable and safe summer. By far and away the most commonly asked question here at Yas Links. Water Hazards (Rule 26) If your ball is in a water hazard (marked by yellow stakes and/or yellow lines) you may play the ball as it lies or, under penalty of one stroke: • play a ball from where your last shot was played, or • drop a ball any distance behind the water hazard keeping a straight line between the hole, the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard and the spot on which the ball is dropped. If your ball is in a lateral water hazard (marked by red stakes and/or red lines), in addition to the options for a ball in a water hazard (see above), under penalty of one stroke, you may drop within two club-lengths of, and not nearer the hole than: • the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, or • a point on the opposite side of the hazard equidistant to the hole from the point where the ball last crossed the margin. Below is a diagram to help explain. A player hits a ball from the teeing ground (point A) which comes to rest in the lateral water hazard (point B). The last point that the ball crossed the hazard is point C. Players options are: TOURNAMENT SCHEDULES AND UPCOMING EVENTS Etihad Open Stableford Friday, 13th July Saturday Stableford Saturday, 14th July Roll Up Stableford Wednesday, 18th July ECCO Challenge - Foursomes Friday, 20th July Saturday Stableford Saturday, 21st July Play the ball as it lies (point B). Viceroy Ramadan Stableford Series Thursday, 26th July Thursday, 2nd August Cadillac Members Monthly Medal Friday, 3rd August It is always worth remembering that the rules of golf are there both to make the game fair and to HELP you. Often rules are considered a means of trying to penalise you however correct knowledge of the rules may indeed just help you get out of a tricky situation. Best Wishes, Ramadan Open Saturday, 4th August Steven Morgan FOOD AND BEVERAGE Dear Members, AGRONOMY REPORT Work has been progressing well on our summer renovation program and all greens, surrounds and tees have been hollow tined, verticut and top dressed. Fairways are nearly completed with four left to do on the back nine. After completing renovation work on the greens and applying a heavy topdressing of silica sand it takes a bit of time to get the height of cut back down and consequently green speeds will be slower than normal for a while during this process. Further works will be carried out over the next months in order to improve playing surfaces and we appreciate your patience. Best regards, Greeting from the F&B Team at Yas Links. Ramadan is coming and with it our great Ramadan Iftar Special. In the whole month of Ramadan we are serving a daily Iftar Set Menu for 85 Dhs (+ 10% Service Charge) in our Hickory’s Restaurant. "Lahb Gai" (Spicy Chicken Salad) Lahb Gai is a popular Thai salad dish that originated from the eastern part of Thailand, or E-Sarn Province. E-Sarn food is typically spicy and full of robust flavor. This particular dish can be eaten alone or with rice. It is traditionally served with sticky rice, typical of E-Sarn food. Your overall enjoyment of the game starts with good golfing etiquette. A phase of great significance, relevance and importance. Golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players, care for the course and to abide by the Rules. A Reminder of the Key Golfing Etiquette Guide Lines: Pace of Play As well as your time, be aware of your position with regards to the group in front and keep up with that group. Keep the round moving by:  Being prepared to hit your shot when it is your turn. Play ready golf, particularly on the tee.  Prepare for your shot whilst other are hitting, have your glove on, yardage calculated and club selected.  If in doubt that your ball is heading into a sand dune and may be difficult to find, hit a provisional.  If you are playing a tournament and are requiring the full five minutes as per the rules of golf to look for lost balls, you must be prepared to wave the group behind to play through. Be Observant when on the Course This goes for our Championship Links Course and Par 3 Academy Course.  Ensure you use your supplied divot mix on the tee box and fairway.  Repair divots on the greens and ensure in all circumstances you rake bunkers.  Continue to observe cart signs and scatter signs which are there to deter you from entering areas which will damage the course.  Be courteous of others when on the course. Assist in attending the flag stick, take care not to not disturb their play by moving, talking or making unnecessary noise.  Ensure that any electronic devices taken onto the course don't distract other players,  Be aware of your shadow on the putting green. Make sure it does not cast across another players putting line.  Never walk through a playing partner's putting line. Your footprints might alter the path of a partner's putt. Step over the putting line, or walk around (behind) their ball. Golfing etiquette is an integral and essential part of the game which has come to define golf's values worldwide. Let’s all make more of a conscious effort to ensure that we follow these guidelines and we assist each other in the process.
