XJR 1200 1300 Stud removal & replacement
The following information is supplied free and is only a guideline I cannot take any responsibility for sheared studs or
stripped threads.
1.
This job is best done with the front pipes removed completely ( see manual for exhaust removal )
2.
I found a slightly warm engine ( not hot ) made the job easier, if by now you haven’t undone the original
header nuts, give them a bit of a spray with WD40 or the likes and remove using 13mm socket (In the case
of very badly corroded nuts a 12mm socket driven on firmly & square should do the job )
3.
Remove the header pipes away from the exhaust ports completely.
4.
Spray a little more WD40 to the base of the stud where it meet the cylinder head leave it to soak for 10
mins or so ( overnight if you have the time to spare )
5.
With the studs exposed and still in place screw on to the stud a 13mm open nut down to about 15mm then
fit another 13mm open nut down on top of the first ( see fig 1 exhaust not removed in this pic ) using
whatever 13mm spanners or sockets you can get in ( the inner ones have less room around them because
of the engine frame )and tighten the two nuts against each other locking them up.
fig 1 ( shows exhaust still in place )
6.
Using a good fitting 13mm ring spanner/socket apply anti – clockwise pressure to unscrew the thread if this
feels really tight try applying clockwise pressure first just a fraction of a turn then anti-clockwise.
