A Canadian broadcaster has commissioned a show in which a journalist and a chef
host a meal for two guests from opposite sides of some of the world’s bloodiest
conflicts.
Quebec channel TV5’s greenlight marks the first international sale for the Dining With
the Enemy format, which originated in-house at TV2 in Norway and is now in its second
season on the Norse channel.
The format sees representatives from opposing sides of a conflict in areas such as
Palestine, Israel, Afghanistan, Rwanda and Burma sit down together to enjoy a meal
and discuss each other’s lives.
A 6x50’ French-language series will be produced for the Canadian channel by
Montreal-based Media Ranch.
The latter has also set up co-venture with New York-based My Tupelo Entertainment
to create a North American version of the format, with My Tupelo taking the option for
the format in the US.
Scandinavian outfit Nordic World distributes the format, which won the 2012 Association
of International Broadcasting award for Best Specialist Programme.
Meanwhile, the show has also been optioned in a separate deal by Red Arrow
Entertainment Group’s prodco Sultan Sushi for Belgium and the Netherlands.
Nordic World’s chief operating officer and director of sales Jan Salling said Dining With
The Enemy was a good example of the Nordic region’s talent for producing “content with
a conscience.”
