Caring for older people with
hearing loss in hospital
Launch of our new nursing toolkit
Wednesday 30 April 2014 • 11.30am – 2.00pm
Birmingham City Football Club, Birmingham
Funded by the Department of Health
We’d like to invite you to the launch of our Nursing Practice
Toolkit. This innovative and easy-to-read kit contains clear
recommendations for, and practical solutions to, improving the
care of older people with hearing loss during their hospital stay.
The toolkit will be available, free, to all NHS acute trusts. It shows
how staff can make a real difference to the earlier identification,
management and readjustment of hearing loss in older patients; how to
improve staff/older patient communication; and how to support older
patients to manage their hearing loss.
We also suggest some highly practical solutions, including: tips and
guidance on recognising hearing loss, communicating effectively
with older patients who are hard of hearing, adapting procedures to
highlight issues, storage boxes that help keep hearing aids safe on the
wards, and specific training that will help staff understand hearing loss
– and how to carry out basic hearing aid maintenance.
In our recent pilot study, the toolkit was shown to have real impact: fewer
hearing aids were lost on the wards, patients’ hospital stays were shorter
– and they were better able to give informed consent for treatment –
and staff carried out basic hearing aid maintenance, with confidence.
The launch is open to all, and will be of particular interest to Directors
and Deputy Directors of Nursing, Elderly Care Lead Matrons and Elderly
Care Clinical Educators.
